MCA/ career advice - 29-01-2008, 10:24 PM

I need some career advice from you smart guys. I have done my grad in BSc math & am 24 years old. my career path has been completely topsy turvy. I have secured a first class in both SSC & HSC. but my academics after that have been abysmal. I failed twice - once in the 13th and once in the final year. but managed to clear my final year with a 50% pass class. now I'm wrking in qatar in an administrative position in a construction company and manage to make around 25 to 30 thousand rupees a month. I have worked here for a year and also have 2 years call centre experience. But I feel I should do a post grad degree- so I am planning to give the CAT. I am also very interested in computers. so I feel if I give my CAT I can also appear for the maharashtra CET for mca & mba. my question is shud I leave my current job (a high paying one compared to jobs in india) to prepare for the CAT or shud I continue to prepare while wrking. Also is doing an MCA at this age worth it? do I stand a chance against all those freshers from engineering backgrounds?

Now a suggestion that's more specific for your aspirations. Try first for a Masters in Maths from abroad after taking GRE. Focus on Europe (US will be too competitive with your poor grades in bachelors). Score well in your MS and it will cover for the poor performance in B. Sc. Join a job based on your Masters and then do MBA after earning 1-2 years of job experience (which will actually mean 3-4 years of job experience if you club it with your present job experience).
And yes, it's easier to crack GRE....

Hey Jxcess ,

i think ur still not clear what u exactly need . .. A PG in MCA (u told that u love computers ) .. or MBA ( u wanna give a punch to CAT ) ...

Be sure first ..

i dont think MCA is a good option ( just a personal opinion ) .. to work with computers u need to do MCA .. morever in that case ur work experiance will be in vain ..

As our fellow PUY suggested .. try to do MS .. or wait for coupleof years more & u will be with decent work experiance which can compensate ur average ( still i believe it is not bad ) academic profile partially . Then u can give GMAT & apply for any second tier business schools ..

Just an idea ... after alll u r the decision maker ... :hurray:

All the best

hi jxcess,

MCA is not a good option if you aint an engineer... Bcoz in the competitive would one need to be outstanding and our background should support it... Bcoz your background is diff... work exp is much more diff and if u do MCA>. than u will be called as fresher in that industry and without any background support it would be much more difficult to manage the things out.

I personally feel the idea suggested by ramdi is good. Or you can take MS in management/international business etc which would be little bit easier compared to Maths, but if you are comfortable with maths than u can move ahead with same.
