US student thinking of applying to IIMs - 29-08-2007, 01:26 AM

hey,

I am a prejunior graduating in 2009 with a degree in chemical engineering. I grew up in Delhi. I came to here to the states only coz they gave me a nearly free ride. I'll have 18 months of full time work experience of working here when I graduate ( my program is five years long with 3 internships).

I can get a job full time if I really try .. its hard not because of my qualifications its just that H1s for chemical engineers are hard to come by at the undergrad level.

So I was thinking of a career switch. I really dont want to spend another 2 years and a great deal of money getting a masters in engineering. MBA in the US is out of the question for many reasons.. mostly financial . I am here on a scholarship.. a 100k loan for me is unthinkable.

Thinking of applying to the IIMs under the "NRI" quota ( hate that label). Cant give the CAT since between internships and classes I have no time to visit home.

GMAT is the only way. Can anyone enlighten me whether my plan is actually feasible. IIMs are picky . Dont really know what they are looking for . Is a high Gmat score enough?. Does workex actually count?. In the US schools look for "leadership" experience ( which requires you to work about 5-6 years in industry). IIM websites have very scanty info.

Any advice would be helpful. Kind of at a crossroads here. Most people think that since I am already in the US on a scholarship I should just shut the fvck up and work things out here. Most people who say that dont know what its actually like here.

Now, when we fought, you had that eye of the tiger, man; the edge! And now you gotta get it back, and the way to get it back is to go back to the beginning. You know what I mean?See that look in their eyes, Rock? You gotta get that look back, Rock. Eye of the tiger, man.
