swatisk believe me it is the most difficult question and also the simplest one if you think from the point of view of answering the interview question where everybody gives gyan abt his dream of becoming an entrepreneur, or giving something back to the society, now think rationally may be you are fed up with software testing that too after doing eng. in metallurgy or mining or just after joining your job you realized you are not meant for technical works now you want to be just out of this environment whenever you go to the office it seems it running toward you to bite,You and your friend pass out in the same year you got an offer from a better softwere comp. you grab your friend was not as lucky as you he then prepares for MBA and joined a top B school and two after that he is getting 3 times better than you.............your reason could be anything you do not need to be a visionary who has concrete plan as what to achieve 10 years down the line.
I am here in SIBM who is considered as good B school, few days back was the last date to give the choice of specialization
and quite a good number of people was not sure as which specialization to choose. I am sure story would not be different in others B-schools also.

So prepare well and get into B school. I am sure if not today after 2 years you are going to think of MBA so sooner the better in Indian context and yes no compromise on the quality of the college............

all the best

Re: Why MBA? - 13-08-2008, 07:07 PM

Hi guys,

I am new to this site. This thread is very interesting.

I am at a stage in my career where I am not completely happy with what I am doing and I am considering the option of doing MBA.

What am I: Masters in Comp. Sc. with 9 years of experience in IT. Started as software engineer, moved to business analysis and currently working as project manager. I have been working in US for past 5 years. I do not like to be technical - do not find it to be as interesting. I like BA/PM work. But I wonder how long will I do this. What is the future - where can I reach. I am good at communication & people skills. I have been in extracurricular (debates, elocutions, compering, organizing) all throughout my life.

I am thinking of applying for one year MBA in IIM-A and ISB. The question I have is what kinda jobs can I expect with my kinda experience and one year MBA.

Looking forward to hearing back from you guys.

There's a very interesting book which I've started reading recently. It doesn't answer the question of 'Why MBA?' but it sure has some exceedingly interesting insights on the MBA degree. The book's called 'Managers not MBAs' and it's written by Henry Mintzberg.

One warning though. You just might realise after reading this book that you sure as hell DON'T wanna do an MBA. In my view, this book (or at least sections of it) should be compulsory reading for anyone associated with MBAs, aspirants, current students, alums.. the whole show

For majority of the MBAs, its a process of discovery. Many candidates who felt strongly about getting into or not getting into a particular field change directions during the course of the program.

What is important is to have some direction and give the MBA adcomm/recruiters the perception that you've given the topic enough thought and have list of 2-3 options that you'd like to pursue if your number 1 option doesn't work out. Also, if you try to fake it, it might become obvious to them as they deal with similar dilemmas day in and day out.

So be genuine and the only way to do that is by giving enough time for introspection.
In your opinion then, how would you find the right balance in application essays between i) showing that you are considering a few options; and ii) knowing what you want to do after an MBA ?

Re: Why MBA? - 11-11-2008, 03:49 PM

Hi all,
i am new to paagalguy.so i am not sure if i am posting the query in proper thread.i am presently working as a software developer in a top MNC(product development) and have 1.5 years exp.I did my B.Tech from NITK Surathkal(CGPA 7.73/10 - 10th 95%- 12th 89%) . This much abt my personal profile.i am writing for CAT and other MBA programs this year(200.Now comes the usual and most perplexing question.why am i writing it? and why a MBA? Is there anything interesting other than a MBA or a MS?
I am quite happy with the work at present(coding), but i am sure that within 2 more years this work is gonna be a bore. The maximum you can reach in this field will be the level of a project lead and that too is a boring work. You have been given instructions of what to do, what to code ,how to code and when to finish coding .There is nothing creative in it. i wonder who are the real people who decide all this? what technology to use,in what direction the company should move ?what product the company has to make next etc etc?I hope thats the job done by a MBA guy and thats y i made up my mind to do a MBA.All my colleagues in company are people who passed out from ordinary colleges and had two three job changes and finally landed up in my company and the saddest thing is i am working under them even though i can easily beat them in level of thinking or giving a new suggestion or coding faster and better(experience and knowledge only matters in IT field, intelligence is rarely required. you should be good at copying code!).I am bored of this work in which i dont have anything to do or contribute other than obeying the rules(my apology for slightly being chauvinistic). This is the problem facing by almost all the youngsters of my age who joined in an IT firm and thats the reason why most of them are thinking of a MBA. Second aspect is of course MONEY as a MBA job will pay u more(i hope).
What i feel is like most others, i am also following the junta without knowing what a MBA can do. i hope it pays you better and will help in a career shift from this coding life.so i am also following the gang. In my office hours since i use to get lot of free time, i used to do lot of day trading in Stocks and in this past 1 year i have earned a good amount from it also.Trading was indeed a field that thrilled me and i really enjoyed doing it.So my doubt is will it be better if i go for a MBA in finace or are there any better courses in this field(finace or stocks or accounting or a mix of these three) other than a MBA?
Sometimes i use to think why take so much tension ? why dont i brush up what i learnt in engineering and find a gov job like in ISRO or NTPC or HAL which offers a decent salary + u get a house for stay+ free medical and other benifits. After all why sud i run for so much money when u can get a tensionless job(comparatively) + job security + pension and all.you dont need to be competent through out your life like a private firm demands.Again,is it better to get an MBA and get into some managerial jobs in Public sector companies? Is a MBA from a top notch intsitution like IIM required for getting into a managerial post in a public sector company or a MBA from top 25 colleges in India will serve the purpose? i am also not sure whether in the long run i will regret that i cud have opted for a better earning job than a government one. In short totally confused of what to do next!!
All forms of advices, suggestions and guidance are welcome.
thanks in advance for all replies....

very surprising ...if you want to stay in the IT field , then probably its better to stay in the IT works ....thats a demanding career ......it will help you to shuffle jobs .....you have more market value than PM in the job market provided you know the technology better way.

but if you want to get out of IT work , and want to change the industry , then that's a different issue.

are in the same company for a long time ? try looking for better opportunities then.....in fact , you could expect to be a PM after just 5 years .....did you do any certification ?

never ever expect that after doing an MBA , you will get a good quality of work or some suited booted executive post.....thats a wrong portrait....I understand your concern , because i am also in the same boat .. there are plenty of MBA people doing Google searches and finding information and writing docs ..and moaning frustration....would you be interested to do that ? this is a fact . it all depends upon you and your hard earned skill set ...no degree can put you in the pinnacle of success....although definitely it can enhance your skill set and help you find a job...what will happen if you land up in a job which carries non-intelligent work after spending time and money ...will you still be happy ? or will look for some other degree ? things are getting saturated now. thousands of management colleges are growing up as similar to engg colleges and there has been a cost cutting approach taken by the industry.... market is becoming job less ....everyday banks, companies are laying off employess . I'll suggest you , dont get confused .....first analyze yourself ....find out in which field you are stong ? try to grow up in that area....if you are talking about money...bipasa basu earned 1.5 crore in just 15 minutes from a concert !
akshya kumar earns 70 crore per cinema ......hmmm....

Hi Unhappy_Demon.Thanks for your reply. Analyzing ourself is the toughest job .Still i am not sure wat i want ,like most of the people. Atleast i understand one thing ,i can survive in IT field like at present (provided company doesn't layoff ppl)and be an average performer all the time. I cant be a good performer in this filed because this is something which i am doing for my survival , not something which i am doing because i like it. i am never gonna read anything extra other than wat i require to finish my work, becoz i dont have any interest in this field. But neither am i able to find out where my real interest is . Perhaps it will take time!!But until n unless i get exposure to some other field , i will never know whether i am good at something else!!!
