Re: Investment Banking - 18-11-2007, 12:29 PM

Hello friends,
I am pursuing my MBA from a top-15 US B-school.

I am keen on a career in i-banking and looking for an internship with an i-bank in India (for Summer 2008 )

I am interested only in i-banking division and *not* equity research.

Could someone help me how to go about it?

If anyone is already with an i-bank or can pass on some contacts, it would be great !

Thanks a lot.

Re: Investment Banking - 20-11-2007, 12:28 PM

Investment banking continues to hold around it a sort of aura of magnificence, don't fall for it, most MBA finance guys are promised the slot and moved into research, and its toil, analyst programmes are available are certain firms such as CRISIL and EDELWEISS, who hire grads for that specific purpose of training them, you might want to look in to that, my concern here is that being a guy who is already into IT systems, a business analyst post might be more to your suiting, anyways, if you are serious, then a masters course in Economics will definitely go a long way. To get a shot at IB at the international banks in India you will need the following:

1. Academic Strength through out
2. Great comm skills
3. Brand repute, ie from the top tier schools
4. Work ex. specifically in the equity research side.
5. Analytical skills
6. Problem solving attitude
7. Business acumen.

IB abroad is more flexible and is a top most for most bankers, here it seems its a job research analysts eventually head towards, also in PSBs most asst gen managers head those posts, meaning substancial banking experience goes into it, eg SBI capital (The IB part of the bank, though pvt.) has teams who are headed by old time bankers with analysts and credit risk managers below them usually from the IIMs, though news from the grapevine is that SBI cap isn't able to hold onto them and is thinking of hiring from elsewhere.

Well to be frank, the big 5 IBs i.e. JPM Chase, Citi, Deutsche, Morgan Stanley Advantage Services and Credit Suisse generally recruit IIT grads for Fixed Income, Forex, Credit, Rates and allied structuring roles, so you may be at a slight disadvantage.

However, you need not lose heart since if you garner adequate (2-3 yrs) work ex in some KPO/domestic bank and then apply to these places, then you will surely get into these IBs.

To package yourself as a fixed income guy you will first have to get some good qualification (PGD from UTIICM is well regarded and will do you good for sure). If you cant get in through campus route, then begin applying to various KPOs and some will hire you for sure. Work there for 2 yrs atleast and then apply to the big 5 and you will surely make the cut.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask more.
