I'm in the Marketing division at Wipro, Mumbai. Dude, first things first. Do you really want to do sales????? It's a f*cked up job and really irksome. Unless you re willing to roam around in the sun and visit all sorts of idiots (customers!) and listen to all sorts of trash (ur customers as well as bosses and collegues) from all sorts of idiots, all day every day, it's not the job for you.

If you are looking at a "Marketing" job, as in a boardroom job where you discuss strategy and all that, wake up. I fell into that and that's why now I need an MBA to get me outta sales and into Marketing!!!!!!

As for getting in, I did not get in as a fresher. HCL (Infosystems) recruits freshers (Engineers) and I got a job on campus. After a year of working at HCL, Wipro made me an offer with a 33% higher pay....so I jumped after all, 25K a month in hand (+ incentives of 1.25L pa over n above) ain't so bad after 15 mths workex!!

What's ur profile though? Where are you based and which division do you want to join in the Sales/Marketing team?

Mike

1. Wipro, HCL or any IT organization will generally look for Engineers (in the non-MBA ranks). In freshers, they look for people who have good communication skills, are not brilliant in their acads (those r the types who'll run away n do an MS ) They want people whom they feel can face pressure, deadlines and can talk to a wide variety of people easily.

2. Yeah, it is a "salesman's" profile, but trust me, a "Sales Manager" is just a promoted salesman. You'll never be SMgr w/o being a field guy. And even as a Sales Mgr, you will continue to go visit customers and all that.....except that now you will also be responsible for cleaning up behind your subordinates.

3. From a Wipro perspective, I'll define a typical Sales Exec and his Mgr.: The SE will go dig out customers, talk to them abt their reqmts, talk about why he should buy from Wipro, blah blah blah. He will also figure out the hierarchy of the orgn. His Mgr will make visits to the cust. and meet all the ppl there. He will co-ordinate the pricing offered, the negos that will happen etc etc. The Mgr will do this for a number of Execs reporting to him and will be answerable to the mgmt for the performance of each of his subordinate SEs.

Whoof. Long post....

Mike

Re: Marketing and Sales in Wipro - 20-03-2004, 02:02 AM

this is some thread man!!

I have been in IT sales for 1.5 years now.. our line of business is datawarehousing and business intelligence solutions.. working for a company called saama technologies...guys think twice aboput comming to sales specially in IT ( cant comment about other verticals) .. its sad scene out here.. man its march end now ( quater ending ) and you can feel the temp rising!! :P

its not that you dont have opportunities.. i get calls form consultants like anything for a new job.. but then dont get carried away that sales managers have no work.. only their targets are more than the sales reps!!

but marketing is a diff picture altogether.. and hence to get out im joining scmhrd this year

cheers
Shashi

Hmm....the Andheri (E) office (Saki-Vihar Road) is the office where the services team functions from. The sales gfuys work out of the Vile Parle office. Who is the person (as in designation and division) who's issued the call? That should give an idea of the role you have been considered for. Also, if you have s/w workex I really have no idea what they have considered you for. Dunno if I'm late in responding to your post, but you could go, check it out and then decide whether you want the job. All the best.

Mike
