Discussion on finance concepts/problems for people interested in finance - 17-04-2007, 02:50 PM

Surprising to say, but from what I've seen, I feel there isn't any thread on this forum where Finance concepts/CFA questions are discussed. Hence, I propose to start a thread where all CFA/finance enthusiasts would actively discuss questions/concepts and work on basics/increase their competency/ benefit from the discussions/whatever
If we can have hundreds of threads on CAT questions and a similar number of threads on Quantitative Aptitude, why not come up with an initiative to discuss anything and everything in finance. All finance stalwarts/gurus/studs are most welcome to contribute and share their lessons with the public here.
Just a few indicators on what this thread would include. From my experience I've seen that a structured approach towards anything in a public forum is bound to be a failure Trust me!
Hence, one way of using this thread would be to discuss random fin concepts / questions/ doubts clarifications/ latest test papers and so on. We can also start a "post a question a day" program (akin to QQAD ) but then I suppose that comes later when most of us are done with the basics/building blocks.
So, without wasting much time.. let's start!

P.S: Somebody.. please suggest the Mods a better name for this thread! I know I'm pathetic when it comes to articulating names, but am learning fast

cheers,

-Vengeance

Yes this is a fantastic Idea !!!
Had thought of starting a thread dedicated to Quantitative Finance but then though most of the discussions would degenerate to career queries.

I would suggest you change the name to "For people interested in The Financial Services Sector "
Take out the reference to CFA as that would lead to a dilution in the thread quality as newbies would start asking questions related fees, course etc questions which are time and again answered in the CFA threads.

I would suggest we keep the discussion here towards clearing concepts related to the Financial Services Industry this would cover the whole gamut of fields like Hedge funds ,Equity research ,Asset Management,Quant Finance,Accounting etc.

I on my part can help out with topics related to Quantitative /Structured Finance .People conversant in their respective fields can help out the newbies in that area.We can also contribute by uploading useful pdf's etc to make it a treasure trove of information.

Hope this is the starting point of another great thread ..

Couldn't agree more with you Rajat!

I really look forward to this thread taking off and this can prove to be an invaluable resource for clearing concepts. I do hope to clear my concepts and help others clear theirs and gain from the whole experience.

All the best to this initiative !

I guess had tried something way back in the same direction but poor response ate my intiatives ..............
But this time its coming from none other than Anupam himself and that too after a long gap of his??.................So me too vouch for this one........but keep in mind PG has been fundamentaly quite infamous for members turning "non performing asset" after getting admissions!! (that's just to kick start this thread)

Regards
Andy

P.S. the earlier thread WAS like this:-??:

I even carried the same in my link in my signature...................but in vain.......

Hi all,

Cool thread and really needed one. Well to start with, I am posting my question.

I want to know about "Valuation Allowance"? please throw some detailed light on this. For those who are new to this concept...I can just tell...its something to do with DTA [ Deffered tax assets ] .

I am also trying to get into it more....and as soon as i will know it properly...will post the answer too....till then if some knowledgable soul can help me out....

Regards
Nitin

Re: Discussion on CFA problems/ finance Concepts - 17-04-2007, 03:59 PM

My 2 cents: Can we have this thread mainly dedicated to problems related to the work that Financial Analysts, M&A specialists and Traders encounter in their day to day work.. Because that will be more apt from career point of view.

Discussing Quant problems is also fine but to be solely filled with them will add nothing new as there are many books which deal with those problems.

I will contribute to the discussion when I discover enough about Black Scholes Model and Quantitative Models for Investing. Anyone who knows something about LTCM will know abt these models.

From an earlier post, I will just post a definition of Valuation Allowance to help the further posters quote this while explaining the finer nuances.

Valuation Allowance - Funds in an account established to cover probable loan losses. If a savings association believes a loan is uncollectible, it sets aside in the reserve account a portion of earnings equal to the difference between unpaid principal and the market value of the loan. If the loan is charged off as worthless, the institution writes down the loan portfolio and the reserve account by equal amounts.

I do not know about Valuation Allowance and its relation-ship vis-a-vis Deferred Taxation to comment on this

PS - One request, When asking questions about some specific terms, please be clear what specific explanation you are seeking..
