Shefali, unless for personal reasons, i suggest stay back in US for a couple of years and earn back your fees (u paid in USD) from ROI persp.therafter u can negotiate transfer with the same co. if they have India oprns or with a similar statured firm to come back to India.
however some co.s are paying their top execs in dollar equivalent terms in India also (if u can manage that). if u can manage something like a sensational BRIC report in US, u get to join as chief strategy officer/chief economist etc(as Roopa purushothaman from goldman joined pantaloon). she is arnd 27-28 and wrote the famous BRIC report. salary is anybodys guess.
Great Point ! Roopa was a senior economist at GS , and now in senior management team at future group.BRIC Branding will remain with her always. She is a global economist now !

She is really beautiful . Here she is:

Roopa success also signifies how branding affects career. Every one can not be expert, the agenda is to be good + brand yourself.

In my 2 years of Work exp, i have seen branding helps and branding is an art which an employee has to consciously do.

I know Roopa is brilliant economist, but the way she got publicity was amazing. She was invited in all Leading business schools, Indian business delegations and also to PMO office. Lucky to get' free publicity' which in turn will help her to propel her career further.

Little bit off topic, but a very interesting topic have emerged of branding yourself with the qualities you got. Any one have experience to share about this?

Cheers,

frnds, wht i can say per my exp is that from analyst/sr. analyst to AVP/VP is possible.
first she came down from an very hi-profile co. to low-profile one. really spkng pantaloon grp dosent requires an economist or analyst. a gud MBA-fin/CA in India wud have done.
second (my feeling) she will be show piece for investors as biyani & co. is trying to garner more funds(read recent BW issues). basically her role will be to get investors to invest in pantaloon grp. thats more of mktg/roadshow/analyst relations.

merit is not the sole criterion for promotions/progress. connections, networks, boss mgmt etc matters more (again my exp). ppl do involve more nefarious and immoral ways to grow other than these. madhur bhandarkars 'corporate' is bang on target. i advise watching it for those who havent. every bit is true.

Linking this back to Shefali's original query, Roopa Purshottam's GS stint was instrumental in the branding process. Even without the BRIC report, I am guessing she'd have done well in her post-GS career.

So Shefali, if you don't mind spending a few years in the US and can manage a foothold into one of the bulge-bracket IB's in NY, go for it. Not so much for the money, but more for the personal branding part.

The network you build over the next 1-2 years will stand you in good stead. Most of your colleagues (from top IB and consulting firms) would have excellent qualifications with great potential. Majority of them will reach senior positions in the next 7-10 years.

And don't get misled by some posts warning you about the disparity between currencies. Indian salaries currently are good enough to pay back your US MBA loans, provided you get the right role. I personally know people who've managed the transition well and are now glad to have chosen the India option. There's a lot happening in India right now and the early birds will get the juiciest bits. So time your transition well.

Do you have a realistic shot at the top global B-schools?
