Re: Financial Risk Manager [FRM] by GARP - 05-06-2008, 02:46 AM

Thanks alot guys for the replies !

What I could find out about core readings is that they r good but vast in content. I can only go throgh either Schweser or Core readings. I dont think that I can spend so much time for both of them as only 5 months r left and my prep is zukk
I want to know if latest FRM handbook, Hull and Schweser(or should it be Core readings?) will be sufficient for FRM ?

Thanks,
Archana

Rgding ur Query - Buy only Hull 6th edition book

Dont buy Gujarati (Rs 1200) and VAR (Around Rs 1800)

Buy Core Readings instead of investing in these textbooks. Gujarati is a bit tough book to understand, while VAR - Philippe Jorion book is good, only 2 chapters are required to be studied from this book.

FRM Handbook is not sufficient to crack the exam

U will require to have Core Readings & Schweser with you.

Cheers,

Shyam

Some parts of core readings any how are so important that one cant afford to skip...
Hull, Gujarati, Tuckman are good sources and would provide better insight into subject/concepts.

FRM handbook is like summary book. One may not be able to base their study on the same. You can use that as referencer.

Rest is upto time available to individual.

I am planning to do my MBA from a reputed B-school in India joining this year. Parallely am also doing a certification programme in Financial Engineering from Mathematical Science Foundation. I have heard about the FRM programme, which has really incited me to give it a thought. I am interested in a career in derivatives market with involvement of the quant.
I have 3 years exp in the software industry. I have heard that FRM cert. requires 2 years of relevant work-ex. Does that mean that I shouldn't go for the FRM programme now as I do not have any prior financial background.

Also, what is the career path to make a career as a Risk Manager.
Will the MBA + certification programe in Financial Engineer + completion of GARP exam for FRM a right choice for my career.

Pls put light on this query.. as I hope many of us will have similar queries before putting our money and time on it.

Thanks & Regards

Dear DC
Keeping my reply short i will say its better if you target FRM in the second year of your MBA as by then:-
  1. You will have a more clear picture of your career path.
  2. Fundamentally more prepared in better molded in examinee mind-set.
  3. And on top of all yourself will be able to answer the question of "Relevance" of FRM to you, which I wonder if many can answer for others.
So, All the best.
Andy

Thanks a lot for your short and sweet reply. Based on yur suggestions and other factors, I have decided to give the FRM exam next year. However, m goin 2 prepre for it now itself and probably would join Pristine Online Coaching, hoping that syllabus doesn't change much from year 2 year.

hi Rahul,

"Man proposes, God disposes" - this exactly applies to me. I had set everything to Join Pristine in chennai from 24 may. But on 17 (saturday) morning, i slipped in toiled and developed major injury to my leg. since then I am taking complete bed rest. I will ok from 16th june. Some how, I have managed to come to internet cafe and posting this message.

How do you find Pristine classes. I am planning to enrol for Online coaching from any of the instites.

All the best for FRM,

Dora

Hi all,

I have a friend who is currently in the IT industry(1year exp with a telecom MNC) and wishes to make a shift to the financial sector.

Will GARP certification help him to get a job in the financial sector.....so he can get relevant exp and also get time to complete more certifications.

Also is there anyone with a similar profile in this blog ?? If so do please let me know.
