Re: Financial Risk Manager [FRM] by GARP - 11-04-2008, 04:41 PM

Hi Everyone,

I just registered to the forum and required an opinion.

I just finished my MSc International Banking and Finance and am currently residing in London. I've been applying for jobs, but haven't got much success because of my work permit.

I always wanted to get into Risk Management, and someone suggested me to do CFA. I did some further research and found out about FRM, which i'm thinking to appear for this November.

Since i don't have any work experience, but want to work in Risk Management, is that a good approach? Cause i don't want to waste my time, and might as well get another qualification meanwhile. It's just that i'm 25 now, and things are getting tensed for me now, and i really want to work towards a career in finance.

Secondly, would 6 months be enough to prepare for FRM? I'm working fulltime though. I have a general idea of various types of risk, studied a little bit about VaR approaches, credit market and operational risk measurements.

FRM recommends 2 coaching institutes namely ACE & Pristine. Pristine Careers is an initiative by group of alumni from IIM-Indore & SIBM, some of who have passed the FRM exam. Ace is headed by one Kris Bindumadhavan who takes classes allover India and also in Singapore .

While ACE have their coaching spread over 15 weeks which has already started in Mumbai a fortnight back and goes till nearly August. They just have a classes on Sundays for 3 hours.

Compared to that Pristine have just a 5 week schedule with 5 hours of coaching on both Saturdays and Sundays .

Its upto oneself which style of learning he/she prefers . Want to go steady or wanna zip it up very fast.

Whatever it is when appearing for an exam which is relatively alien, it is always preferable to have some sort of a guidance to shower light on many of the unknowns from people who have been there done that.

Self study, only recommended if you have solid background in the area of risk, have already cleared a CFA level 2, etc. Remember this ain't an easy exam by an stretch ..................

Hi All,

I have an update for all of you, though not 100% confirmed , but apparently Laxmi Xerox would also be providing the other stuff which were not available in the past going forward like Schweser Pro Question Bank, Schweser's Quicksheet, Practise Exam Book etc.

Having said that,I don't want to take any chances and would go with getting the FRM notes directly from Schweser. Girish, PMed you with my details, will have a catch up soon .
