Coexistence of Retail and Kirana

A viable model for the peaceful and prosperous coexistence of both retail and kirana stores is the existence of all neighbourhood kirana stores stocked by a retail giant though operated by your own neighborhood LALA.

How does a retail giant benefit form this
1 If a retail giant offers to stock a local store he gets a benefit a price from the producer because now he can order more units and thus his capability to bargain enhances.
2. In a locality or a crowded town it will be impossible for a retail giant to get space to set up his mega mart . So a easier way is to save on land price and tie up with a local partner. His brand visibility is increased.
3. To ensure consumer loyality a card be issued in partnership with a bank . For daily needs a consumer can go to the neighbourhood store however for bigger goods he can go to the main retail outlet which may be at a distance from his home . Once in a while no body mind travelling a distance for his shopping.

How does a kirana store owner prosper.
1. In the long run a kirana store owner stands no chance in front of a retail chain. Reason Why will I go to a neighbourhood who sells a juice for Rs 15 than a retail store. So to survive he has to tie up.
2. He to will get goods at a price at par with a retail stores. So he too can sell at a lower price and thus exist.
3. He is saved from the hassles of contacting each and every distributor. His stores can be just be phone call or in better cases just a few punches of keys away.
4. Just in time supplies no hassles of shortages etc.

How does a consumers benefit
1. Does'nt have to crib about the price difference at retail and kirana.
2. Gets benefits of retail stores in his neighbourhood.

Gd Work Sharad.
Now can we have a look at diadvantages.
For Retailers:
1. Don't u think they wl be loosing sales. Wl u ever go out wait 4 parking, wate ur petroland wait in long queues 4 billing when at ur doorsteps u hv same product at same price.

For kirana stores:
As u mentiond they wl keep everything bough frm retailers. So they wl bwe at the mercy of retailers who wl be charging high %of dere sales.

Akhil i dg article. I hv read his call of the mall and now m up wid "Why we buy". Read 100 odd pages. Paco underhill is really gr8
N he has rightly pointed out da misuse of labour. This is da reason 4 high attrition rate in retail.

Look at the pics uploaded

When one searches for Reliance Retail or Subhikhsa in google,it takes to futurebazaar.com (Pantaloon's website)

This is ridiculous, Pantaloon bought keywords of Subhiskha and Reliance Retail in google.Even one makes a spelling mistake, then also futurebazaar is there.

Pantaloon's...uphh...its really happening in India..

Help me friends, is it possible a career in retail without an MBA - 17-05-2007, 08:41 AM

Hello friends,

I am a Commerce graduate with 6 years experience in sourcing, purchasing and foreign trade experience in China. Also I have good command over spoken Mandarin language.

But I have not done a MBA, so I would like to know if I would be eligible for sourcing/purchasing jobs in any big corporate retail companies in India.

Retailers
1. Innovative thinking should help retailers to come out of this lets consider a ac bus going around localities on weekends picking up people from fixed places not too far off fom there homes and giving them a ride back home for free or a nominal caharge.
2. once the retailers tie up with kirana shopkeepers and have a presence they need to set up stores on the outskirts of the city where they can plan for ample parking facilities.

Kirana stores
1 Yes they may have to give higher % in case of a single retailer being present . Multi brand competition should keep such % low. However in distinct future I cant see how they can survive if they do not tie up

Neeha lets keep the discussion alive. Other pgs would liketo see your point of view as well.
