Re: is coaching necessary?? - 12-01-2007, 05:32 PM

i have been to a coaching and i feel it does help but i guess its over hyped.
as far as i am concerned it helped me more when i was interacting with IIM grads and thats about it. yes , you cannot do without Mocks , you need some practice, regarding that.

but , i have also seen that when most students join a coaching , they think their job is over and they hardly put in the consistent effort required.
also a coaching cannot teach you maths and english , which they attempt so often.
even the coaching classes are there to make money and sometimes you do tend to feel that your queries remain unanswered. i have also seen that an average student is not cared about at all , and the good students dont require the attention.

so all in all , i feel you need to decide for yourself. i do think if you have a good group , it will suffice but if you are on your own it will help join a good coaching institute.

i dont thnk that coachings really necessary if ur really commited to hard work. moreover what coaching classes do is brush up ur basics and that i thnk most pple can do on their own. but wat sometimes pple lack is the drive and if u too fall in that category then go ahd and join a coaching class otherwise its total waste of money.hpe u do well ahead.byeee

is coaching necessary?? - 28-04-2007, 06:25 AM

hi

i would like fellow pagalguys' opinion about "how imp are coaching classes" for preparation to get into a good b-school, and exactly wat value they add.

i'm thinking of starting preparation for cat in near future but not decided yet, whether to give it in 2k7 seriously or 2k8.

i graduated last year from engg n working since then.

due to my work schedule, its pretty difficult (almost impossible) for me to join even weekend classes.

hence, asking ppl's opinion, on wat things need to be specially done at home in order to mitigate "not joining" coaching classes.

i would specially request ppl who've already cracked cat earlier, to give their feedback, as that would be hearing straight from the horse's mouth.

thanks and regards

well my dear friend
why not give CAt 2007 seriously coz even if u fail u will learn where u made mistakes and then in 2008 u will be at ur very best
instead if u go for 2008 u have to much time to prepare but again u might also feel tired in between the race
regarding coaching
well Yes if
1 u r out of touch of studies for quite some time now
2 ur basic in maths/di/va r not very clear
3 u want some motivation and good competition to study
4 u want some experts to guide u
5 u want a teacher to solve ur doubts in both theory and problems

No if
1 ur basics r clear
2 u have a good group (ur friends) with whom u can compare ur performance
3 u can understand written solutions very easily (no need of a guide)
4 u or ur guide (can be ur friend or relative who know lot about CAT) knows abotu CAT and its changing pattern

now if u don't join coahcing then
1 go for good correspondence course
2 go for such course which lets u put ur scores of practice tests on their website so that u can compare urself with others (IMS does so; don't know about others)
3 try to find a good teacher or a CAT aspirant near u who can solve ur doubts
(not very difficult as for doubts any person good in subject will do)
4 be religious in ur studies and try to get coaching schdules from ur friends and follow them at home.

Hope this helps.

Puys,

coachong has helpmed me alot..

CAT has vast portion The coaching intitue (I am in TIME) schedules your cousre weekly , you just flow ith the Classes , Suppose you had a probablity exercicse class go home and solve al probability questions possible from various TIME books and next week other chapter.

There were around 100 handouts been discussed in the class.

IIM students taking your class is real inspiratioon that you can go ahead and crack the CAT.

you make friends who have common goal , your intellecttual circle grow.
The materials of CAT are real good they give around 25 bbooks and test papers. When I joined TIME in decembver there were around 12 batches for cat 07 know as of july end there are 60+ batches.

If possible do join not that expensive ..I have not missed much classses. be regular and listen to the faculty..

necessary--No
useful yes (but it depends on U...hw U use it)
actually, this is a question U shud ask Urslf...if the positive points mentioned by othrs above..cud b managed by U...U don need it.
but one thing is true...the efforts has to come from U
so evry ans ends on just "U"

Re: is coaching necessary?? - 27-09-2007, 10:19 PM

hi,
im givin cat this yr n havent taken coaching. n believe me u dont need coaching.

im not prepared for cat, coz im jus givin it for the sake of it...but i realised dat i was better off dan all my other frnds from cl, ims etc,,,,n im jus an avg student...

i tuk notes of sum classes, went thru them. but yes, mock cats r essential. i give the free cats wenever they r held. besides, my frnds pass on their mocks after they r done (i must say, u need really generous frnds :satisfie u get all kinds of study mtrl in d markt, on the net....

u need 5-6 mnths atleast for good prep, if u can devote time n study sincerely, u'l save 1000s of rupees, time n unnecesary travelling too.

finally, its all upto u...if u think u cant manage, then coaching is an option.
