Bhaiya's & Didi's Pl help me in selceting stream for Graduation - 20-05-2006, 10:19 PM

Hello all,

I know this post will sound very weird as I have just completed my 10+2 (Math’s Economics & Commerce with 67 % marks (overall and 90% marks in math’s). At this critical juncture of my life I am little confused to decide about my future course of action (what stream to opt for in Graduation ) . I am very much clear about what my Medium-term goal ,and that is to do an MBA from IIM (soon after graduation).

As my percentage is low SRCC, DSE & ST.Stephens of the world are out of my reach. So I have to do my degree from other colleges & i.e. why I think the stream selection become all the more important.

My Brother {Ahmad Azeem (ahmadazeem777), who is member of this forum} advised me to post my queries at pagalguy as you ppl have are having the same aspiration that I have & that you are in the best position to guide me & share your experiences . So Didi’s & Bhaiya’s please advise me on which stream to select. I am open to B.Com & B.SC (math’s is a must here); the ultimate aim is to maximize the chances of getting into IIM’s.

1)B.com :- As my brother completed his B.com in 2000 along with ACS he says B.com is a cake walk and you need to do something extra with it … but I don’t want to go for course like CS or CA or CWA as it will take me at least 5 yrs to complete. So If you recommend me B.com then pl also suggest about the additional degree/ course I should pursue to build my candidature for IIM’s (how about CFA etc )

2)B.SC :- If I take BSc then would be taking Maths for sure but I am not sure other sbjects like stat’s etc will add real value. Here in Hyderabad we don’t have fundoo combinations like Math’s & economics for BSC…. So If your advise is to g in for BSC then what should be the subjects (pl keep my % in mind) & where I could find such a combination ( I am willing to move to relocate myself in north India also).. please do send the course name & college address.

I have already got admission offers from the better known colleges In hyderabad for B.com Computer & B.com (hons). But I want to take your expert advise.

Didi’s & Bhaiya’s pls reply at the earliest As I have to make this VERY VERY IMPORTANT DECESION for my Career at the earliest.

Thanking you
Ahmad Naeem

First off please edit your post and remove your phone no. as it is against forum rules to post private info on posts.
Now coming to the point, It really doesnt matter what you choose, what matters is how well you perform in that course and your overall profile should be good i.e. extracurrics, social work and stuff like that. Now since you have done subjects like eco and commerce in 10+2 I really feel you should do your grad in a related stream like B.Com. If you chose to do CA/CS side by side it is purely your choice but like I said How well you score in your grad is the most important thing. Cos AFAIK there are two groups of people who take CAT. One is engineers and the other group is non engineers so no matter what you take you are still gonna be in the non engg group which leads me to the final conclusion that you are better off doing a B.Com than a BSc
Now comes the reality check. You are gonna be writing CAT after 3 years and assuming that there are bout 2.25 Lakh aspirants at that point of time, it is gonna be very tough. So prep hard, build a good profile, score well in your grad and Of course the most important step crack CAT
ATB

P.S.: You may get many different views from people far more qualified than me so I would suggest you to wait for the learned ones to speak and yeah standard disclaimers apply

You are really sweet calling all of us here bhaiya's and didi's.

Coming to career solution:

See the profile of Kirti pendyal from hyderabad-Currently IIM-A PGP 1. He is also B.com + ICWA inter, joined time coaching during second year of b.com and worked hard at CAT for over a year. Do B.com and along with it do CA inter or ICWA inter. Inter will have 8 subjects and you can write CA inter or ICWA inter on your CV. It is value addition when you go for IIM interviews. CFA from ICFAI will also take minimum 4.5 years. Bottomline is CA inter or ICWA inter have got the value.

Stay at hyderabad, do b.com, along with enroll for CA/ICWA foundation, target to clear upto inter in 3 years (8 papers in inter + 4 or 5 papers in foundation), give cat November 2008.

Warm Regards,

Dear Naeem,

i would suggesst you to go for CFP (Certified financial Planner course). you can enroll into this course after 10+2. it is easier than CA,CFA and CWA. it's well recognised abroad.log on to www.collegefp.com
the exams are held at all the centres of National Stock Exchange of India Limited, hyderabad is one of the centres so you wont have any problem. objective type questions are asked in the examinations. the college of financial planning has office in your town hyderabad too. the address is

B.sc is good as well but one billion dollar question: What will you do along with bsc. You can go for foreign language course (Highly valued at IIM interviews) or computer courses from NIIT etc.

Try Bsc. Mathematics( high scoring) or Statistics(see the curri. its a real tough course)if interested in Delhi Try PGDAV awesome Faculty(OP Aggarwal...one of those professors who assume and make sure u study regularly)
Else try other colleges also do a Short Term course in financial mathematics from St.Stephens(no percentage taken here).

Hi Ahmad,

First of all clarify whether you are eligible to even apply to a B.Sc. program. Up north in Delhi you need to have PCM in 10+2 if you want to apply to B.Sc (Hons) Mathematics.

Right now I assume you are not, so your choices are limited to BCom and BA degrees only. An advice I give to everyone is that within the broad area of your study your aim should be to get into the better college and not better degree.

For example, if a students is offered say, BSc (Stats) in Hindu College and BSc (Maths) in PGDAV i would suggest to go for Hindu (no offence to DAVites! ).

IMHO, Economics, Statistics and Accounts form the base of an MBA - Economics should train you sufficiently in the first two areas. Hence for a MBA aspirant i rate BA (Hons) Economics more than BCom. Mind you it is a tough course.

Else I prefer a B.Sc. degree any day to BA/BCom as it offers more opportunities and options at a later stage. You are still finding your way ... most people still are when they are 23-24, a BSc would give you a platform to try for an IT job or even lead to an engrr degree (MSc+MTech) if you think in that direction.
