Interested in Sports Management? - 10-03-2006, 04:54 PM

Hi

This is for anyone interested in sports management. As a failed sports pro , and perennial sports fanatic , I think, nay – I know, sports management has extremely bright opportunities for tomorrow.

If anyone has any idea about sports management courses (masters) and/or institutes, please post them here – specifically in India but maybe inexpensive one’s abroad as well.

And specially for specialized sports (any one, from football to lacrosse!!) – do such insti’s exist and what placement opportunities do they offer?

Grateful to any enlightened soul who can shed some light…………..

Found this article.... hope it helps...

Sports Management Career Course Institutions in India and Abroad

[CENTER]Most of you have been passionate about some or the other sport at some stage of your life. It's also very likely, that during the childhood, you were fascinated by some player and wanted to become like one. But due to one or the other reason, you could not become a successful sports person. You need not lose heart because there are many other avenues in modern sports which can help you live your passion for the sports as well as earn some money. In addition to becoming a player, you can become a physical education instructor, a coach, an umpire or a referee. Further, you can practice sports medicine or if you write well, you can become a sports journalist. A new career, quite popular in western countries, is sports management which is a mix of sports and marketing or business.
Nowadays, there is so much money in sports that all the successful and well-known players have their own personal agents or managers. Even new entrants have started employing managers to look after their career. As a sports manager or agent, you will be responsible for player's schedules, career progression, business promotion, media and public relations. The administrative aspects like budgeting, finance and other logistics would also be your responsibility. To put it more precisely, sports management combines work as an agent together with the business and marketing aspects of the sport.
The job of a sports administrator involves planning and management of sports activities and events from time to time. There are many private and government- sponsored sports institutions which employ qualified persons to manage their work at various levels. It has been seen that these officials have been sports teachers and coaches. In case of leisure and sports-club management, you are expected to handle administrative work, including that of managing accounts, planning, preparing schedules and timetables and arranging for the specialized coaches as per the requirement. These days, golf clubs, resorts, adventure sports and other leisure activity centers require trained professionals to look after and promote these sporting activities.
To do a post graduate diploma course in sports management, you should have a graduation degree with at least 40 percent marks. If you have done your graduation in Physical Education (P.Ed.) or related course in a particular sports of your liking, it will give you an extra advantage. Presently, there are only two recognized universities which offer Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Management (PGDSM). They are- (a) Alagappa University, Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, which offers a one-year PGDSM and (b) Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education and Sports Science, New Delhi, which also offers one-year PGDSM. Notification for admission generally comes in the month of June and last date for submission of forms is in July every year.

The situation is much better abroad. There are many institutions which offer courses in sports management, both at the undergraduate and post graduate levels. Diploma courses are also available. If you play at state or national level in any sport, you may even get a scholarship in the United States.
If you want to become a successful sports management professional you must have good communication and business skills. In addition, you must be passionate about at least one sport. Commitment to the sport and the profession, energy and enthusiasm, patience and perseverance and sporting spirit are other attributes required to become a good professional in this field. Sports persons after retirement from active playing can also utilize their experience and pursue a career in sports management.
