Need Advice - Career Post MBA - 21-02-2006, 07:42 PM

I need some help from Experts. I have close to 10 yrs Work Exp in IT and currently working as a Project Manager. I was initially looking to more into finance but found that it is difficult (if not impossible) to move into an unrelated field and even if I managed, it would be at an entry level position only.

1) My question is that what are the options available to me post MBA in IT.

2) Apart from IT, what are options where I can leverage my IT Work Exp ?

Appreciate any help !!

Hi
Entry in to unrelated field after MBA shud not be a problem since MBA relates all the fields!
With kind of work ex u have, u will surely land up havin a gud job in finance sector since ur corporate exposure looks gr8.
I don see any point u doin MBA in IT since u have worked in IT industry, an MBA would add nothing in terms of IT skills.
U can leverage ur IT work ex in any field. mktng, finance (kpo's look for ppl with it background and finance specialization)
And the best would be Operations. Areas like supply chain, materials management etc are all IT based.
In HR also, their is a demand for ppl in HRIS role.
what else, IT is everywhere so chose the area u want to work in and ur IT knowledge would prove to be Gold in that.

All the best for future

cheers!

if you wanna get into finance, why are you looking at an mba in IT? If you are a project manager in an IT company, you dont need an mba in IT coz you already ARE where an MBA in IT will ultimately take you. Had you done an MBA in IT at an earlier stage in your career, maybe you could have become a project manager faster...but why would you do it now?

anyways, no one with 10 years experience will be taken in at entry level positions in finance companies...a finance company would either reject such a candidate or will give you a position that matches with your experience. migrating to unrelated fields shouldn`t be so difficult for people with managerial experience coz at your level, it is not the technical, but the managerial skills that matter...and these skills are a constant requirement across all industries. so if you`ve shown good managerial skills at work, any other industry will accept you too.

i think that instead of an mba, you should consider other courses such as MS or E-MBA or CFA or PGPX of IIMs, which are very focussed, accelerated, and targetted at experienced people.

Approvals and celebrations will rarely surround your inner decisions and choices to follow Personal Truth. You will be challenged and taunted: “Who do you think you are, anyways?” And, indeed, through your choices and decisions, that is precisely the question you are answering–to yourself.

Thanks Ramit & Crash_test for the suggestion.

I spoke to the people in the universities and have been told the answer that it indeed is difficult to change the domain. What do you think would be the sequential change of line for me. Though granted that IT is used everywhere, I would like to know the domain/sector where the change is more natural/sequential.

Appreciate the help !!

May I suggest some informational interviews with folks in fields that interest you, such as finance?
Is it a case of 'the grass on the other side' or a genuine interest. Trust me, there are many s/w guys trying to move to finance simply because it sounds hot. At the end of the day its another job with its own levels of tedium.

Anyway, it will help to get as much information as possible. Finance is a VAST field and there are many avenues that you could possible choose. Your 8 yrs of s/w development must have given you opportunities to deal with financial management at some level - resource loading, preparing SoW, etc etc. You could look at the transferable skills and project those in your quest for a finance career.

In case you decide to go the CFA route, CTD is the man...check out the CFA thread..

Cheers!

I would say within IT if you are giving them advice on how to architect their solutions, you would also be involved in understanding their business processes. This is *exactly* what you need to be a consultant - someone who is very smart and has a deep understanding of a specific domain. I would say if you are confident try to search for the job-role you intend WITH an MBA degree. See what the job profile reads out as. I am sure if you have sufficient skills, you might land up that job even without an MBA.

Think about it. Unless its a H/W/S and you want to play on pure credentials there is very little reason why you cannot do what you truely aspire for without an MBA.

Re: Need Advice - Career Post MBA - 07-03-2006, 11:33 AM

I realised that myself that most of the IT folks get bored with IT after few years and try to do a career shift and usually into finance as it offers good money. I agree that finance like IT is another run-on-the-mill job.

I would really appreciate if someone can suggest me a related move from IT into something else thats natural and also not totally unrelated.

Hey RPJ,
There are loads of options in the technology sector itself.

1) Program management.(not project managemnt)

2) VC funds specializing in tehnology company investment

3) Private equity firms looking for exposures in established equity firms.

4) Technology startups.(marketing/techno-marketing)

5) Technology consultancy as some people have already stated.

And please remember U are not an IT person U are a high-technology person so all other high-technology domains e.g. Biotech are open for you.
