Re: IIM now or MBA abroad later? - 29-04-2008, 12:59 PM

Hi,
I have total work experience of 4.6 years incorporates the experience of 4 years in Manufacturing domain and 6 Months in IT domain. Currently I am working as SAP Functional Consultant.

I ahve decided to go for an MBA degree to perform well in the Mangerial Competencies in my forthcoming professional career.

Therefore I took two options in front of me.
1. To go for CAT
2. To go for GMAT

but some of my relatives stay in America said that though an MBA professional from US B'School has greater importance in international market than that from India, and in international market at least 70% MBA professionals are from US B'School, but those B'Schools do not take proper resposibilty of placement after the course is complete.

So there is always a risk associated within this process and when I am a married person and a family is behind me I can not take much risk.

I really dont have clear picture about it.

And I have opted for appearing for CAT in 2008. ( at least if I get chance to Good B'School I can expect a good placement and those B'School authorities in India are really concerned about the placement of their students to make their competitive positions)

Now seeking some suggesions from anybody who can give me a better idea.

Cheers,
AC

Hi AC well to be very honest what you have heard is pretty true
i mean the foreign colleges dont worry about your placements and
all as it happens with indian colleges, Just because for the reason
they treat you as mature ppl and dont want to do spoon feeding.
you have to build your own network and look for a suitable job
that best suits your profile. Like you mentioned you have around 4.6 years of work exp
you can look for US bschools but then you have to see how much you can afford
and stuff like that, But if you ask me it will be a great exp if you do it from a B-school in US
rest is all upto you

Hope this helps
Cheers

Does anybody here know anyone who actually did an mba from a good B-school abroad? Is IIMA still worth it? How much is the difference between the brand values of IIMA and IIMB? How different are the posts offered to freshers and people with work-ex?

I like technology but I've a passion for business too and my ideal job would be somewhere at the intersection between the two.
hey dude!

well in my opinion u shudn't b bothered abt being at an primier institute in india(stricty top 5-6.. d giants...IIM A B C ,FMS ,ISB XL) or to be at a good institute abrd ,else it is a stanford or Wharton....since d ppl coming to these(indian) fight it out frm d best colleges in india..be it an IIT IIT NIT or best science /arts /commerce colleges in india...and that too they surely 4 d brand they carry..also it provides u d launchpad to grab d niche profiles in india n abroad..u might be earning a descent salry but d hike get restrictated at a certain period of time...but after doin an MBA at least u wud start with a average arnd 16-17 which is on constant rise ...evry yr....n tthat to with d best profiles ..n a definete option to change!! ..if u fed up with d wrk u have...

Re: IIM now or MBA abroad later? - 05-05-2008, 08:21 PM

I have a similar concern as has been shared by getmenru. I am an engineer working with an MNC with a total work ex of 4 years. I appeared for CAT last to last year, but was not able to prepare for the same as I was sent to the client's side for a project 4 months prior to the CAT. I came back a couple of days prior to Cat and sat for the exam with almost no prepration. I scored 91 percentile in that attempt. Last year I planned to apply for ISB, so took gmat. I got a score of 700 but didnt get the interview call from the institute. This year I am planning to reappear for cat but with prepration.
I have been joined an MBA coaching institute for the same as well, but have been suggested by some teachers that with my profile I should rather go for an MBA from abroad rather than trying for IIMs. The reason they gave me was that IIMs do not have as any international recognition, its not even in the first 100 institutes across the world. The primary reason I want to persue MBA from India is that due to some personal reason, I cannot stay abroad for a very long time. Had it been just for the duration of MBA, staying abroad would not have been a concern. But given the fact, that MBA from a good institute abroad will cost nothing less than 40,000,00 INR and to take care of these expences, I would have no alternative but to take loan. To repay this loan will mean, I will have to stay away from India even after completion of MBA. This is what is the point of concern for me.
Any suggestions from those who have gone through a similar dilemma would be appreciated.
Thanks
