Re: IT/ITES leaving gurgaon and baglore? - 27-07-2008, 11:25 AM

Hi guys, nice to see a thread that i can really really relate to. I graduated in 2003 and was working with wipro bpo till 2006 when i resigned to prepare for CAT. My experience in the bpo industry has been very ENRICHING. CAT 2006 nothing happend and a year later 2007 i was able to make it to SIMS. Just joined the institute this june(200.
I read a few threads and i saw a lot of people complaining about the odd hours of working & abused herald at you . But honestly after the initial few weeks everything was fine with me. I used to get plenty of sleep during the day which was important otherwise you'll be low on energy the whole night. And i guess bcoz mine was not a sales process but a semi technical process there weren't too many abuses. And guys you can make a career out of BPO....plz...no "social life" happens with everyother industry, you "society" comprises of people you spend time working with and thats same for all the sectors. I was off calls within 6 months, worked as a quality analyst for some time then became a team leader in feb 2005. There were times when i thought that nothing much is happening and i should resign because as you get used to a routine then the human mind starts ticking and thinking about the larger picture. But everytime i thought of resigning i was given a new responsibility a new challenge so i kept on going. AFter becoming a TL i knew i will need to work for atleast one year so that the experience counts. After completing one year i looked out for best oppurtunity and resigned in april 2006. I joined Wipro as a fresher looking to experience new things and learn new things and i can proudly say i left it 3 years later as an achiever, much wiser person and much learned person. Ofcourse, i was not a changed person coz there was nothing wrong to be changed but yes i got tremendous exposure.
The question is then why did i resign when i was on a growth path and everything was going good. Well i don't know for sure myself, but something was missing, i felt a vaccum inside me, a vaccum of knowledge or lack of it. I felt intellectually empty and i thought MBA will fill that vaccum and make me a more satisfied person. So far i don't know if the decision was right. As you can see i fcuked up a bit as i spent effectively 2 yrs in getting into a bschool(would have been a deputy manager by now and in the next two years surely a manager) and i am among the "older guys" out here. Also i don't know that if i do marketing/Finance will my previous experience count because it'll be absolutely unrelated. I know HR will consider the experience but i am not interested in that field. If anyone has any knowledge about this please do reply. May be a few years down the line i can tell myself if my decision to do mba and quit BPOs was the right one or not....

Ravs, for lateral placements in your college, your total workex will be considered, irrespective of whether you apply for HR/Finance/Marketing jobs. Although, there might be a few companies that insist on 'relevant' experience.

Overall, being 'older' than the rest of the pack doesn't really matter. There are certain unique advantages that your experience will enrich you with. And there would be a lot in class that you'll be able to relate to.

I used to work for a KPO, and if I'd stayed on for another year or so, I'd have been next in line for a promotion to Manager. But then, again, as you said, intellectual stimulation was reducing there. Hence, here I am, doing my MBA (in HR incidentally) and enjoying every minute of it.

All the best!!

Thats a nice performance...you got TL post very early..you must be one of the top performer there in Wipro BPO.

BPO is heading towards $ 50 billion sales turnover by 2012..so you are right.. today you may have been working as deputy manager and by 2010, there was a possibility you may have been leading the floor as operations manager/service delivery leader at 6-7 lakhs p.a package.

Good news is, recently by Business Today, SIBM was ranked number 4 best business school in India..so you have got yourself a very good institute to persue MBA.

I think you did the right thing. Intellectual cross-pollination of ideas at SIBM campus will make you a knowledge manager and you should target BPO companies after MBA...Roles like Transition (based at client site) or business development at BPO chasing clients in US/Europe.

I am not sure how well your experience will be counted as relevant experience in an all together different stream like invesment banking or FMCG industry but one thing is sure your experience will be counted well and will be attractive for offshore service providers in India.

Your profile is simlar to mine. I also worked with wipro BPO for a year- AOL/MRM saves process. I was a top performer there and was due for TL promotion in 6 months time but i decided to quit to focus on CFA and get some finance research job.

I will be completing CFA soon and only time will tell where i am headed but I will never pick up a headset again.

In my personal opinion, you did a right thing to persue MBA from SIBM. Education is a golden jewel developing our mind and thinking power.

Thanks guys, its been very encouraging seeing all the replies & it also kind of helps to know that there are guys who think on the same line and have the same profile. Babu just one correction i am in SIMS (symbiosis institute of management studies) and not SIBM. So there is a difference.....not a HUGE one but yes a big one you can say. Sumit....you left your kpo job but you are doing your mba from XLRI........and i am doing it from SIMS......there again is a difference. Again......i don't know where i am headed. But please keep posting relevant stuff, experience and thoughts so that we all can get some clarity in our heads about what we are doing is the right thing....
Keep rocking....

and babu......nice to know you were working for an aol process.......since i was also working for AOL.......mine was Wintech in delhi. The point that you make about being a knowledge manager due to Intellectual cross-pollination of ideas is well taken.....but i don't see that happening here. I don't know if its the same for all the mba institutes but mba right now seems more hype than substance....which is exactly the reason why i left my job. I hope the next two years bring more content and substance into my course......hoping for the best

Wsw, as far as I understand, this is not a thread for posting 'current affairs'. It's meant to share experiences that you have had...

To quote the thread starter,

Quote:
I wanted to start this thread for a long time. I want to invite all those guys working in call centre to share their experience (good/bad) and your future plans. Things like whether you like the Indian call centre/BPO industry, how it can be improved, weakness/strengths of Indian BPO/call centre.
