Hi guys, nice to see a thread that i can really really relate to. I graduated in 2003 and was working with wipro bpo till 2006 when i resigned to prepare for CAT. My experience in the bpo industry has been very ENRICHING. CAT 2006 nothing happend and a year later 2007 i was able to make it to SIMS. Just joined the institute this june(200 .
I read a few threads and i saw a lot of people complaining about the odd hours of working & abused herald at you . But honestly after the initial few weeks everything was fine with me. I used to get plenty of sleep during the day which was important otherwise you'll be low on energy the whole night. And i guess bcoz mine was not a sales process but a semi technical process there weren't too many abuses. And guys you can make a career out of BPO....plz...no "social life" happens with everyother industry, you "society" comprises of people you spend time working with and thats same for all the sectors. I was off calls within 6 months, worked as a quality analyst for some time then became a team leader in feb 2005. There were times when i thought that nothing much is happening and i should resign because as you get used to a routine then the human mind starts ticking and thinking about the larger picture. But everytime i thought of resigning i was given a new responsibility a new challenge so i kept on going. AFter becoming a TL i knew i will need to work for atleast one year so that the experience counts. After completing one year i looked out for best oppurtunity and resigned in april 2006. I joined Wipro as a fresher looking to experience new things and learn new things and i can proudly say i left it 3 years later as an achiever, much wiser person and much learned person. Ofcourse, i was not a changed person coz there was nothing wrong to be changed but yes i got tremendous exposure.
The question is then why did i resign when i was on a growth path and everything was going good. Well i don't know for sure myself, but something was missing, i felt a vaccum inside me, a vaccum of knowledge or lack of it. I felt intellectually empty and i thought MBA will fill that vaccum and make me a more satisfied person. So far i don't know if the decision was right. As you can see i fcuked up a bit as i spent effectively 2 yrs in getting into a bschool(would have been a deputy manager by now and in the next two years surely a manager) and i am among the "older guys" out here. Also i don't know that if i do marketing/Finance will my previous experience count because it'll be absolutely unrelated. I know HR will consider the experience but i am not interested in that field. If anyone has any knowledge about this please do reply. May be a few years down the line i can tell myself if my decision to do mba and quit BPOs was the right one or not....

Thats a nice performance...you got TL post very early..you must be one of the top performer there in Wipro BPO.
BPO is heading towards $ 50 billion sales turnover by 2012..so you are right.. today you may have been working as deputy manager and by 2010, there was a possibility you may have been leading the floor as operations manager/service delivery leader at 6-7 lakhs p.a package.
Good news is, recently by Business Today, SIBM was ranked number 4 best business school in India..so you have got yourself a very good institute to persue MBA.
I think you did the right thing. Intellectual cross-pollination of ideas at SIBM campus will make you a knowledge manager and you should target BPO companies after MBA...Roles like Transition (based at client site) or business development at BPO chasing clients in US/Europe.
I am not sure how well your experience will be counted as relevant experience in an all together different stream like invesment banking or FMCG industry but one thing is sure your experience will be counted well and will be attractive for offshore service providers in India.
Your profile is simlar to mine. I also worked with wipro BPO for a year- AOL/MRM saves process. I was a top performer there and was due for TL promotion in 6 months time but i decided to quit to focus on CFA and get some finance research job.
I will be completing CFA soon and only time will tell where i am headed but I will never pick up a headset again.
In my personal opinion, you did a right thing to persue MBA from SIBM. Education is a golden jewel developing our mind and thinking power.
