Some of the few conclusions I have drawn through reading all the 91 pages(yes it took me more than 3 days) of CFA(american wala)are:
1.CFA does hold the foremost authority on the education towards finance
2.One who has done all the three levels sincerely can genuinely be said to have a very indepth knowledge of finance
3.CFA is definitely a career enhancer
4.The latest fiasco over the exam in India wudnt destroy the ground on which its reputation has been built as the neighbouring countries are there to give us a breather
5.Since its a correspondence and a self study thing I guess anyone clearing it wud be at par with the goras....
6.An MBA after this course wud really be very advantageous and wud make one a very hot player(if only he has the calibre to sustain)

the recent controversy is in no way going to deter me in my determination for CFA,

Well,Now its the time to shoot questions:

1. The 91 pages havent been able to clarify the kind of job prospects that it wud hold for an Indian(well am an engg student too)
So all the veterans of the thread may please answer this question of mine that
at every stage after I complete L1,L2 or L3 what kind of job offers can I expect: by kind I mean what work and salary and prospects...... given the fact that a candidate has completed L1,L2 or L3
Plz be definite in ur reply and not a general answer,I would love to have FACTS plz and not a general view that my friend has done this or my uncle has done that or my girlfriend is doing this.... plz be precise in your answers

rajat, ctd and nzmoic as well as others plz pitch in your views

2. SO are guys in India considering this couse only after having failed in the CAT ........ so that makes CFA secondary to the PGP courses of IIMs.... is that so???
But to be a global player and to avoid corporate finance, dont u think an MBA after CFA wud make alot better sence as at the undergraduate level we do not have a substantial and globally competitive course in the area of commerce, finance and economics.............. what say guys.....

3. Well since there is no campus placement concept related to CFA how can one get a job after completing the aforesaid levels........

4. and guys out of STALLA and Schweiser which is better??????? plz write your personal views........... as one food can singularly cure a man's hunger... what are the diets in complementary to the main course diet ????? well what I wish to say is that if I actually happen to choose stalla or schweiser than what other resources do I need to complement it.... like text books etc.....

5. well this is a general question:
well some important points:
a).I read vault's career guide to i banking
b).I read liar's poker
c).I have been following businessline closely for sometime and like the investing stuff there
d).I have been reading about the capital market's
e).I have been reading about finanace in general...................
f).I am dead sure I hate corporate finance and dont want to be a member of team xerox(as lewis calls them)
g).Trading exictes me and I feel my analysis and predictions are quite good and ppl do respect me during exam times for kind of question and section that one shud focus....
h). but ppl say my extrovert quality, personality and communication skills are a perfect blend for marketing
SO MY QUESTION IS AM I FIT FOR FINANCE????
How do I answer this question of mine I dont know???? Though I feel I wud be well in any field of finance except corporate finance and accounting stuff....... still I am not able to make a judgement.........
CAN anyone give me a frame work as to how do I answer ths question for myself?????
DOes an MBA from the IIMs open doors for me in the field of trading and sales

plz guys do answer these questions of mine

And those who have given their L1 or L2 or will be giving sooner, plz share your experience here

thanx

Ravi

Hi Ravi,

Good to hear you benefitted from this thread...even I did...

I took level 2 at Katmandu....The exam was weird for me...I think i am going to flunk....anyways coming to ur questions...

I think MBA is a differnet ball game...CFA has more depth ....and is suited to be done alogwith the job....MBA helps u to climb the corporate ladder...CFA is more for an analyst....not a manager....
having said that a manager with CFA is deadly combo....think of CFA as a suplementary to ue core competency ...CFA cannot replace ur core competency

3. Well since there is no campus placement concept related to CFA how can one get a job after completing the aforesaid levels........

apply thru various sites....get shortlisted ...crack interview and join the job

4. and guys out of STALLA and Schweiser which is better??
after L2 exam i have felt that schweser was not good as far as portfolio management was concerned...also the practice exams (not sample exams) from schweser were unduly tough...I found the exam to be more conceptual based....
Stalla i have not tried...but I have heard schweser is better from my friends.

I hope i added some value to the thread

Variations of this question have been answered time and over again on different threads, however since you have taken the time out to compose such a long post and since after the exam I am relatively free I will try and answer to the best of my knowledge.

Quote:

The answer to this question has to be general because it very much depends on the individual. For the sake of giving a definite answer I will say that simply passing a Level 1 will not get you any decent job in Finance. However a L1 coupled with your background may get you in.
For example an I Bank looking for a Quant Oriented position may shortlist an IIT grad because having done L1 would imply that he has basic fin knowledge and can quickly learn and adapt to the job.It would also show ones commitment and interest in the field.
But an ordinary grad who has nothing to offer apart from a CFA L1 should not expect any good offers.

In my own case I got interested into Fin way back during my IIT days.I worked with a Fin startup on campus and did lots of extra Fin courses in SJMSOM(we were allowed to take up one course of our choice every sem).

This exposure allowed me to get into a Quant profile in a Financial Services KPO that time I had not even registered for the L1.8 Months down the line
after passing the L1 in Dec I moved to my present job of a Quantitative Analyst with a French Hedge Fund.
Did the L1 help me get the job? I don't think so I probably would have made it without the L1 ,but it certainly assured my employers towards my commitment to the field.

A CFA L1 will add a little spice to your resume nothing more but what it will do is to help you get a better understanding about the Financial services industry and that will allow you to make a better informed choice about the kind of career you want.

A L2 with an ordinary background may get you an entry level job in Financial Analysis with some KPO.A L3 with some relevant work ex would allow you to enter into a top I Bank/Hedge Fund.

An MBA and a CFA are not competitive but complementary. An MBA is a general Business degree whereas a CFA is specialization in financial analysis.Yes a lot of ppl do the CFA after failing to get in the IIMs but a lot of IIM grads also do the CFA and so do a lot of people who did not take the CAT in the first place!!! It has nothing to do with the CAT but everything to do with your own career aspirations.

Naukri,Monster, timesjob et etc.Once you have a good profile just put up your profile and soon you will be hounded with calls from placement consultants

I do not know about Stalla
but I found Scheweser to be pretty good for both L1 and L2 .Of course you will feel Schweser does not cover everything in detail but in you start doing that you will never end up completing the course.

Only you will be able to make this decision and probably after actually working in such a profile. In any case Finance has dozens of possible work profile you may hate one but love the other.

Yes an IIM A,B,C can get you into Sales and Trading .

From the CFA website

Update to December 2007 candidates
Dear CFA candidate,

You may have been aware of the recent court cases in India concerning the CFA Program, and specifically, the administration of the June 2007 exams there.

We are pleased the Delhi High Court permitted the CFA exams to be held in India as scheduled on 3 June. However, our writ petition before the Delhi High Court challenging the AICTE decision prohibiting the CFA Program in India remains pending. As a result, we are currently unable to accept registrations from Indian candidates wishing to write the December 2007 Level I exam, even if they wish to sit for the exam outside of India.

In view of these ongoing legal proceedings, we may not be able to hold the CFA exam in India on 2 December 2007 as scheduled. If we are unable to hold the exams in India, CFA Institute will refund your enrollment and registration fees.

We will continue to keep you informed of any further developments as we vigorously pursue our legal remedies. Please visit our website for the latest updates.

Sincerely,

Jeff Diermeier, CFA
President & CEO
CFA Institute

That was explained very very comprehensively by rajatb... just to add, you can get into Sales & Trading if you have done your MBA from a good institute... also there are those who are not MBAs and are doing great guns in Sales and Trading in top firms...so being an IIMian is not a pre-requisite .....

Cheers

Re: Need some Opinions on CFA. - 14-06-2007, 05:42 PM

A naive albeit genuine question

I have pulled up the following from the CFA page
CFA Charter Guidelines: Work Experience
"
Acceptable work experience includes activities that consist to a significant extent of collecting, evaluating, or applying financial, economic, or statistical data (as appropriate) as part of the investment decision-making process; or supervising, directly or indirectly, persons who practice such activities; or the teaching of such activities. The investment decision-making process is the professional practice of financial analysis, investment management, securities analysis, or other similar activities."

Does everyone over here who is planning for CFA exams already hold this qualification? I have read the descrition above and the titles list on Sample Jobs and find myself ineligible.

But I have similar experience in BFI domain;

Is there anyone else with a similar dilemma ???? ? ??? ??? ?

:satisfie: All views my own...expressed with reference to the context of the impending pre MBA entrance interview.
