MBA ES Profile / ERP: Role Of a Marketing Major in a Techie Company - 26-10-2005, 11:45 PM

What does a Marketing major do in a company like WIPRO Consulting / Infy in the ES domain? ERP?

Is it a techie role? Where the "marketing" in it?

Who is it meant for?

What are the exit options from the industry available?

Hi Achilles,

I shall try to answer as much as i know from my experience with Infosys as I am working as a Consultant in SAP there. Probably, i can explain you from SAP point of view which holds good for other ERP packages as well.

In the world of ERP, there are only Consultants who are of 2 types: Functional and Technical.
Most of the ppl who come down with an MBA degree in Marketing join as Functional Consultants either in SD or FI module of SAP. From my experience, both SD and FI Modules are dependant on each other and hence the job involves designing the Sales and Finance Processes. And this varies from client to client. So, a Mark guy generally works on SD module of SAP.

The role may not be technical but in ERP both Fucntioanl and Technical areas go hand in hand. I dont say that the FC does coding, but he will need to havea thorough understanding of the techncalities of the Module in which he/she is working. Same holds good for a TC as he/she is expected to know the Domain or Module in which he/she is working. As i already said, SD or even the Logistics module of SAP constitutes 'Marketing'.

I really donot understand what you mean by exit options, but if i can make a wild guess, i understand that you are asking about the profile of the Consultant if he/she wants a break in another industry. It is generally supposed to be the otherway reound. People who have a wide range of experience in say Automobile industry or Energy Vertical and move to the respective Vertical in ERP as Domain experts or Business Analyst. If one leaves the ES company as a FC, then he/she can join in as a Business Analyst in any other company.

Hope i answered your queries. PLease feel free to ask more

Vijay

Apart from what Vijay has said about ERP, there is also another function of actual Business Development.

(a) For product development companies like say HP. They need to bring in sales for their products. They need to analyze the market and make the features in their products etc.

(b) For services companies like Infy, Wipro, TCS, they need to bring in business. They need pitch in for contracts, engagements etc. They need to get the SOWs signed.

I pretty much thing there is nothing more to it. Plain Vanilla sales and marketing as in any other company, nothing that diffrentiates IT.

Arun

nw since both the biggies have pitched in the gyan, i may jst try to give u my small professional take

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP).
It is a commercial package that facilitate the seamless integration of all information flowing through a company-Finance,accounting,HR,supply chain, customer info into a centralized pool that facilitates data sharing and eliminates redundancy

Nw there are few global vendors who have there ERP products used very extensively like
SAP,Oracle Applications

SAP's products are in the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) business sector. The company's main product is SAP R/3, where the "R" stands for real-time data processing, the number 3 relates to the three tier application architecture: database, application server and client. The predecessor to R/3 was R/2. Other major offerings include Advanced Planner and Optimizer (APO), Business Information Warehouse (BW), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Supplier Relationship Management (SRM), Human Resource Management Systems (HRMS), Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) and Knowledge Warehouse (KW). The company also offers a new technology platform, named SAP NetWeaver. While its original products are mostly used by larger companies.

nw for other ERP products like oracle applications, People soft[nw called JD edwards]
i suggest u may do some R&D on it, 'coz am nt really aware of these prducts in depth.
