Its totally absurd and ridiculous on PG's HQ part to put up such a video on its Home page....looks like a serious tactic to gain more hits/publicity..to put it more crudely.....PG s going Aaj tak way....to get more hits...start doing a casting Couch.... There are thousand things which happen in any insti/company, who is PG to teach morality/ethics to to be MBA's at IIMC or XLRI...?

b) Most of you don't seem to have read or acknowledged that we have had similar thoughts at our own work place before we decided to bring this up

No, this is not moral policing - but an attempt to show to a lot of people the level of crassness that has crept into people's behavior and how they all seem to think it is OK. It is easy to take everything out of context, but I am a bit surprised to see all of you do it as well. The challenge at some point for us is to inform and help make change happen - surely not the most easiest of things to happen.

But all yee folks, don't twist the message.

a) No one is saying women shouldn't swear
b) No one is saying everyone should stop

But hey gentle people, some class please. Some better ways of expressing yourselves. Some more better ways of having fun and bonding. Just because things have been one way, they don't have to forever be.

Well PG, I am an Alumni of XLRI and currently working in an overseas location. I hv got few points to be made here ........

1. According to you, "No one is saying women shouldn't swear" ..but apparently it should have some class.... Well can you kindly provide the example of some classy swears...which the womanhood should embrace?

2. "No one is saying everyone should stop" .. then what are being discussed here..? some people would stop?

3. Do you seriously think people who in the video swearing against XLRI, do that everyday and night? I am not sure, but are you saying you never swear in your life when you lost your cool or when in an India Pakistan one dayers.. some indian fielder dropped a sitter?

4. I work in an extremely competitive environment where people are losing their jobs day in and day out. Market values of investment vanishing within a single trading window, friends are being envied, Race and Country of origin becoming your qualifications and slangs and swearings are the order of the day (Though in a whispering way) in the boardrooms and lunch corners. Right from Wall Street or Texas Oil Giants CEOs to Ordinary workers in Detroit, swearing happens all the more in high stake corporate games. Its an undeniable fact. And if you don't face it and choose to get a cultural shock then it will be counted as your failure. I don't know which world you live in and what are you trying this world to become. No one ever said it is a nice place to live in and it will never be.

5. I used to be an old timer of PG and later on moved on looking at certain directions in which you are taking this forum. Nevermind it is your baby, it is upto you how you rear him/her up. But I guess with this kind of nit picking of a fairly trivial, once in a two years, kind of incident you are just risking loosing the followings of most of the top schools Alumnis and current students. Because you know, this exists in all most all the Bschools of some repute and history, the students and ex-students will vouch by that. Don't seriously do this. Because I think the Alumnis are the real strength for PG as well. Don't try to be another Arjun Singh, please.

for those who are not from IIMA and wouldnt know, here is a desrciption of the event:

after all this there are snacks and then shouts of "kat lo" start to echo in the dorm asking all non-dormies to leave. (what follows was true in my dorm with friends from other dorms saying similar stuff happens).

then we have something called a top 5, where the birthday boy has to list 5 gilrs from his batch and three from the senior/junior batch (depending on if he is a junior/senior) in his order of preference. he then has to describe in detail and vividly how he is going to have sexual intercourse with the 5 girls he has nominated to be in his top 5 (the 3 girls from the other batch are spared). initially, it is quite shocking for a lot of the fachchas who do it/see it for the first time. but they are forced to sit thru it in the name of dorm tradition. and once they sit thru 2 or 3 top 5's they also start to enjoy it...much like starting to smoke or drink. it kind of becomes an addiction. i dont know if it goes on in the girls' dorms as personally i wudnt have the guts to discuss such things with a girl, however close i was with any of them.
This one has made me speechless...

Nothing personal against anyone (as I have lots of Friends out there including you Pendy )..But it is the cheapest possible thing which can happen...Man is an animal, I do understand, who potrays the sixth sense, but behaves like an animal with 5 senses (which only he knows) in some aspects..

In colleges, there are certain things which are common, but what is uncommon here is forcing someone into such a third rated sh**...

But the question here is, isnt there any authority were you could complain???...

Why did this come out only now????

I hope there is nothing called privacy which still remains as privacy:-)

Agreed, PG is going the "sensational" way, but pendyal why are you trying to be sensational by quoting internal stuff from your alma mater which I believe should be kept internal.
I'm not much concerned about this entire thread in general, if PG's revamping its image, so be it.. ,but fact of the matter is "an MBA aspirant would still continue to fight for a seat at an IIM irrespective of such revelations."
But, what troubles me is, what if someone from PG or anyone external approaches Dr. Samir Barua or any faculty/visiting faculty with pendyal's mail? Can you imagine what sort of trouble the current batch would be subjected to?

A sincere request to pendy to please edit his post.

Anupam just the thing i wanted to put accross. And better that it has come from you, someone who himself has spent 2 years in an IIM.

I remember reading this in some blog by an IIM A guy, that the dorm stuff remains a secret for life. Then why did pendy come forward and say all the stuff about what happens at IIM A dorms. Recently only i asked a 1st year guy about the reason for him being tagged as ****** in his dorm, and i got the same answer as i had read in the blog some time back.

I think if all of us introspect, there will come 1000's of things to us where we ourselves have done some so called illegitimate thing, or been swearing, or you can point fingures of hundreds/thousands of people you know have done the same but we shouldnt post all that stuff here. All that stuff has to be buried deep doen inside you, not to be disclosed to anyone ever.

I would request pendy to edit his post too, also Anupam to edit the quote portion on his post.

Cheers

MK

I cannot help but laugh at people who call this crap as "tradition" and "culture". Pardon me, but I choose to differ. How come this sort of trash happen to become a "tradition" of certain institutes? Since when has speaking expletives become an integral part of our "culture"?

Please stop jusifying all this in the name of tradition and culture. Will you all hold the same opinion if you did not belong to any of the institutes concerned?

All this crap happens becaue it is "cool" to speak expletives in today's world. Any person who doesn't start his sentence with the F word and end it with a b****** is deemed as an outcaste. In colleges, especially in the hindi speaking states, if you don't use this sort of language as shown in the video, you are mocked upon and branded as a thumb sucking kid. People who can abuse others buy using expletives are the real machos, the real "mards". Hence more and more people start going this way, just because they do not want to be left behind, they don't want to be branded an outcaste. And to justify the cheap actions and the cheap language, people start projecting it as their culture and tradition.

Can I ask one question? Is the "culture" and "tradition" which forms the base of all the leading B-Skools in India? If yes, then I am wasting my time preparing for all this crazy entrance exams. Having worked in a professional environment for two and a half years now, I cannot think of going to some place where I have to put up with all this immature stuff.

There is a saying in my native. If you seat a dog even on a golden throne, it will still jump down at the first sight of a used plate. So, it doesn't matter which institute you belong too and which institute's stamp you carry on your forehead. If at the end of the day, THIS is what you actually are.. I am sorry to say there is not much difference between you and any ordinary rickshaw puller. The number of degrees you hold doesn't determine your education. You being an IIMCian or XLer doesn't prove that you are educated. It is your behaviour that you exhibit in public that shows what you actually are.

This video coming out in the public is really a bad thing to happen. Defending and justifying the action is nothing but a mere panick reaction. When the minds have cooled off, I hope the gravity of the situation is realized.

Cheers..
