IIT course stucture vs. state university

Hi masters,

I am not related to IIT by any means but I want to ask you a little question.
How IIT course structure is different to State level university's.
I mean what's the difference between IIT course structure and State level.
I wanna know the level of difficulty and if there some other advancement
as opposed to state level university.
for ex. B.tech(IIT) vs. B.E.(pune uni)

please give this answer to end up my curiosity.

(Actually I wanted to be IITian but unfortunately I could not due to
my playing Video games and other nonsense activities and Its' too late
now ,I will never get admission in IIT in this birth.)

From what I have seen, the IIT course structure is more or less professor driven. They decide what all to cover, which books to be used and even how to judge individuals competence in their subjects. They may plan for an open book test or a presentation instead of usual 3 hour papers. The reason why these professors can be given such a free hand is because of their maturity level in their subjects. They would have written many valuable books, published numerous papers in many international journals and will be considered an authority on their subject. When these guys teach you and test you, no one needs to tell them how! Other then subjects most other activities happening in an IIT is student driven. It’s the quality of people associated with IIT which makes it different and not any defined curriculum.

Whatever sid has portrayed is correct to an extent. But there are certain basic differences.

• The curriculum is not very professor driven. This cannot be the fact for the simple reason as it will cause disparity amongst the IITs themselves leave aside the other colleges. There is a basic skeleton which every one has to cover. How he covers it : text books, course notes, slides, open book, open notes, presentations is his purview. Another reason for the common skeleton is : B.Tech is an intermediate step before M.Tech/MS etc. Now a disparity here can hamper one's chances in exams like GATE which are common for all across India. So the skeleton has to remain the same.
• So, the difference lies in the method of teaching, books referred ( not many Indian authors used here - a very vast collection of books and journals), highly qualified professors and of course, the best of students.
• Therefore, whatever mechanical engineers read across India is same in the skeleton. The basics never go haywire. But people in IITs may do some very good elective courses on nanotech, instrumentation, product design etc as the case may be. They also get to specialise in minor streams like Financial Management, Operations Research, Trends in Business and Finance, Biomedical Engineering, Physics .... a very long list.
• There can be a variation in number of courses across IITs as well. The stress one is subjected to etc. But that is on the number of elective courses one has to complete. The core courses remain the same. Just the electives vary from one place to the other.
• In state colleges, you may find lesser number of electives.
• There can be dearth of laboratories in state level colleges. IITs boast of world class laboratories and excellent testing and research facilities. This is due to the fact that they have B.Tech, M.Tech, M.Sc., PhD programmes in the same campus.
