Well, ppl get weightage for work ex as they crack CAT while they are working.

If you can justify your decision to the panel for leaving the job, its fine. But ideally its better to continue the job and plan your schedule accordingly so that u can crack CAT.

All the best.

My take on this would be that the CAT or for that matter any competitive exam is unpredictable so it isn't worth to risk your job for it. What if you aren't able to crack the CAT ? Better try to balance the job and study, give more inportance to the study but don't quit.. it may be a very risky bet !

Hi, Although this post is pretty old I thought I should share my views on the same as I too am in a similar fix and have posed number of questions to myself as well as some people in the i-banking / finance field regarding the same.

I am a CSE graduate and working in the IT industry for the past 3 years. I feel I have tremendous interest in Finance and passion for Investment & Financial Analysis.

If you want to make a shift from IT to Financial Analyst / Equity Research Analyst / I-Banking then you basically have two broad options.

1. Do the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) either from the CFA Institute, USA or ICFAI University. Its a thing to be done part time over say 3 years. Extremely tough exams, lot of core financial analysis study. Opportunities would follow but ofcourse, the onus of completing it is on you. If after a year you feel you don't want to do it, there would be nobody to push you. Also you will have to find a job on your own. You may even get a entry level job after completing level 1 exam.
Advantages: Part Time, self paced, core finance study, no cosmetics. Quite economical as well compared to a MBA.
Disadvantages: No opportunity to get campus placements. Risk of leaving it after 1 or 2 exams. Is too narrow in scope so you have to be absolutely sure you want to do it.

2. Do an MBA from a premier institute. Opt for Finance specialization and concentrate on Finance related subjects, get a summer placement in a equity research firm and get a dream job thru campus. This is ofcourse easier said than done as there is a huge CAT to bell

I know people who have worked in IT for 4 years and then went into Investment Banking. So it is possible but I-banks recruit only from top B-Schools. So only an A+ institute would make it certain that you end up in your dream job. but even otherwise, after doing your MBA, you have so many other career options open to you. So the risk is mush less than the CFA. After you get your required job, you can always do CFA part time which will increase your value in your organization.

All the best

Re: Making a career change with MBA -- Is it viable or not??? - 03-10-2007, 11:21 PM

Hey al,
my initial career plan was MBA. thts it. i was looking at any college in the TOP25 ranks and was plannin to apply according to the results.but a new problem is i got placed at Oracle, a job wch i like but jus never expected to get. Now the Q.... Should i still aim at top25 colls (IMT,DMS delhi,VGSOM...) or clock some experience at Oracle and then try in short wat sld i choose,

"admit at( Rank 15-25 IMT,DMS,VGSOM..)" or "Oracle".

while taking into consideration the lesser time i ll have to prep when i start working and also the better GMAT possibilities tht ll become open after work ex at oracle.
wch do u alumni think is a better career path.

thx al any way .
