Question MBA Operations for BCom background...Good/OK/Bad choice? - 30-03-2007, 05:44 PM

Hello Everyone,

Nice forum.
Am pursuing MBA in PUMBA.

I wanted your advice on this:
How clever is it to choose MBA in Operations after a B.Com. degree?

It is said that Operations does good only for Engineers. Engineers are prefferd during PIs.
Are their any career-success-examples for anyone who took operations after B.Com.

Basically, the plan is to take Marketing and Operations. One of them as Major and the other as Minor.
VERY KEEN to take Operations as Major, but, having a B.Com background, in a doubt.

Please help me out a.s.a.p.
Companies have already started coming for internship programs.

Regards.

Ask yourself -

1> What I wanna do 10 years down the line and Why?
2> What I am good at and Why?

Do not confuse "keennees" with your "competency and skill".

Also ask, do i want to prepare myself according to "What's Hot" in the market or I want to prepare myself for "What I would like to do to be happy?"

You will find out! Let the companies keep coming for internship, placements , off-campus and so on.
Make sure you "get-in" where you want to be.

My two cents

Cheers,
Rohit

Hi Rohit,
Thanks for the reply.
I have not yet got a chance to test my competency-skills over Operations related tasks, but was involved in Marketing and handled a team of 10-15 people. Though it was a good experience I still want to see myself in Operations field 10 years from now. Whats hot in the market is not much of my concern, I believe one needs good potential to jump into any market, whether hot or not.
I am interested doing career in Operations as compared to that in Marketing.
Whats holding me back is things I am listening to frequently:

1) B.E. degree holder is preffered to a B.Com. degree holder for Operations positions.
This happens during selection procedure, so it may happen even during ones tenure with a company.
I am hammered by this so many times that now am really afraid and thats why came to PagalGuy.com for help.

2) Are there any career success stories where BCom holder had taken Operations.
Any alumni who know of such combination please come forward and help me!

Buddy ..

It is just a myth that only Btech studnets are taken for operation jobs , definitely some preference is given to those guys but u can still get some good offers espacially frm banks ..

At the end of the day you have to convince the interviewr abt ur potential ...

Best of Luck !!!
