1.What are the typical responsibilities of a business development manager or engagement manager or account manager. these terms are used interchangeably. |
Given the tech industry is still to mature fully, these words could mean different in each company.
That said; a BDM is a sales guy, report within his sales hierarchy. His role is to win deals (pre-sales), and hence not involved in 'post-sales' activities. Getting new customers on board is the KPA.
An account manager or enagagement manager on the other hand, is involved with closer contact with the customer over extended periods as long as the client engagement exists. Often he will be person responsible for bringing in repeat business.
In smaller setups, Engagement manager is also the Delivery Manager, with delivery responsibility of multiple projects running with the customer.

BDM is well, simply put - about "business". A MBA would help to give you a more rounded view of matters and additionally introduce you to the sales and marketing profession on paper. But more importantly, it is a platform for you in participate in a unlearning, relearning and formal placement process.

And what it the typical heirarchy in pre-sales? I mean the career progression from thereon. |
Fresh MBAs can be put in pre-sales to fill out RFPs as well. The hierarchies being atypical, there is no universal answer. You want to know from the manager if the sales team maintains their own hierarchy, or are the sales manager reporting into delivery managers of the region.
