Placements in New York - 08-07-2006, 05:11 PM

Hi Pagalguys,

Hope everyone is doing fine. I've not visited this site for a long time and I did see a greeting message today here telling me that I've not participated in the threads for a long time! So I decided to go ahead and post a query which I have been thinkin about for some time.

Can the B-School alumni give me some idea about the placements in New York? I'm thinking of moving to that city for some time due to a personal reason. The job I'm currently in probably cannot take me there.

Specifically, which are the companies which offer jobs in New York? And what are their preferences generally? I have worked in a EDA (Cadence) company (basically software) for the past 2 years. And will have 4 years of exp by the time I join an MBA institute.

cheers!

In terms of job opportunities, New York isn't majorly different from any other big city bustling with commercial activity. Many of the big investment banks and financial institution are based here and that means for a someone with an IT background (like yourself), there are plenty of opportunities to choose from.

If you are skilled in specific areas such as Credit Derivatives or other sophisticated products then you can negotiate good premiums.
In the current visa cap regime, make sure you have the work permit issues sorted out.

Just like London, Mumbai etc, this is a city that'll grow on you, even if at first everything seems chaotic.
