MBA in Singapore - 09-07-2004, 10:28 AM

Hi:

I have been looking at Singapore colleges like the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Nanyang University.

Does anybody have any idea on these colleges?

I have been told that getting a job in Singapore is tough after an MBA. What is the value of the course in India?

Hey guys,

It is *NOT* funny to worry about a job post-grad

There is a thread running someplace which discussed the rationale behind doing an MBA from Singapore (NUS) and AIM Manilla. And the main reason that most people opted out was because there was an extremely weak placement program. If you come back to India after 2 years of lost opportunity cost and about 20lakhs of debt, for a 6lpa job... I guess its just not worth it.

HTH,

Arun

Re: MBA in Singapore - 09-07-2004, 02:23 PM

hi i am a person who graduated fron NUS from engineering and who is now working. Well as far a i am concerned NUS MBA is more valued than NTU MBA> but the placement scene in both places are not so good. infact NUS is better. the main reason is that of student profile. according to my friend who is currently doing mba at NTU the student quality is bad with a gmat score of 500 and above.that deosnt speak of good quality. and most are rich lads from india who come to take an MBA. in NUS u need an average of 675 as far as last year was concerned and placement is far better.student quality is also good but the problem is most of the students are working seniors so the interaction level is very low...and they dont really need a placement as most are looking for a promotion with this MBA.but anytime NUS MBA is better than NTU. infact i would compare NTU with second tier schools in India...But my suggestion is try also for Insead singapore which has got excellent placement. finally its INsead or NUS...hope this helps

Re: MBA in Singapore - 09-07-2004, 04:09 PM

first of all i would like to clarify that i didnt do mba from NUS but i am working as a trader. But i have done business modules from biz school as part of my engg program.

the cost...
ofcourse the cost of NUS biz is high..i suppose i tiwll be close to 20000 sing dollars *27 rupees for 2 years,,may be more than that..its high but not high compared to US schools. Living and boarding expenses will come to around 700 sing dollars*27 rs/ month if u r not so extravagant. infact the food and boarding is not so expensive. and NUS has got excellent infra one among the best in the world..take my word on that...but if u r a person who booze a lot , who luv travelling to malaysis and stuff putt 1500 dollars a month.but a normal guy with little extras can comfortably live with 700 dolars inclusive of rent and food.

my suggestion is dont take loan from there.take it from here. here the loans are very easy to get as the banks are cash rich. u can get full edu loan from banks with no itnerest till u graduate ..and infact u need to start paying back the loan after 1 or 2 years of graduation and that too u have window of 10 years pay back time..so risk is almost zero..

regarding jobs..singapore is known for finance and investment banks so if u specialise in fin and if u can show that u r good then u can easily drag ur ass in a bank...but u need to show ur commitment. i being a trader know how tough its to get to a bank but having an MBA that too from NuS helps in the process. but if u want to do systems or suppy chain management dont come here as u wont get a job guranteed. come here if u want marketing or fin..or u want to go for pHD in US.this is a launching pad. hope i clarified ur doubts...

add on- i have seen big mails from IIM guys. but if u come to NUS u will be taught by scott stern of harvard and guys like that..they frequently visit here..finally if u want a job here its not ur school or degree its ur personality and how u can express urself in front of others...hope this helps..mail me if u want furthur clrifications

NUS is at par with IIMA in world rankings..placement is not very bright, that is what one gathers from the web. Manila is also as good AIM...However, I want to know the duration and the cost of these MBAs. Iam interseted in ones within $20000 range incl preferably living costs, and one year would be ideal. Which MBAs fall in this bracket?

NuS says the MBA can be completed in 16months under some conditions, what are those conds..can any one explain.
