Thanks for your kind words, saar. Although I'm not the best person to reply on this thread, but I'll try my level best to throw some light

To begin with, I'd like to copy-paste one of my earlier posts

Quote:

Following are some of the job options for MBAs in IT companies:

1. Business Analyst: You act as an Interface between the customer and the delivery team. You are expected understand the business processes and the exact customer requirements and document them properly in a format that the delivery team (developers) understands. For being an effective BA, you should have knowledge of things like UML, RUP, Rational Rose etc. in addition to having a good domain knowledge. Experienced BAs become good IT Consultants.

2. Pre-Sales: Here you do things like responding to RFIs, RFPs and preparing client-specific presentations. Similar profile is that of a Business Development Manager.

3. Sales: Do I need to explain this one?

4. ERP Consultant: You are responsible for understanding the business processes of your customers and implementing packaged ERP software (like SAP) after making the necessary customizations.

5. Project Manager: Project Managers are involved in a project right from the stage of requirements gathering. They are required to do Planning, Estimation, Resource (People, Hardware, Software etc.) and time management. Tools like MS Project are heavily used by PMs.

6. HR Manager: Not much work Kidding Responsible for Recruitment, Appraisal, Employee retention, Career planning, Trainings etc.

7. Quality/Testing Manager: Suitable for people with testing/QA kind of background.

Hope that helps. Good luck for your MBA.

Cheers!

NOTE: The above info. is based on my personal experience and perception. Standard Disclaimers apply
Now, I'm currently working in a BA profile (for the moment) in one of the major Indian IT companies (I don't think the company name is of any relevance here because all of them are pretty much the same). You can read the Job description of BAs in the post that I quoted, my role is similar to that (but not limited to that only). My technical background (Bachelors + MBA Systems) helps me in speaking a technical language when I'm interacting with the Delivery Team (of my company) and my MBA degree helps me in understanding the customer needs. I can't go much deeper and disclose details because of the Project I'm involved in...I hope you understand

Coming back to how MBA in Systems helps you in the Industry? The biggest advantage is that being an MBA, you get a preferential treatment everywhere (I don't know why )...somehow the top management trusts MBAs too much (even if they are freshers), gives them a lot of responsibilities (and hence learning opportunities)...sometimes the workload can become excessive because you need to be involved in every phase of SDLC and are expected to make valuable contributions, but all that is a lot of fun if you are passionate about technology

I didn't know much about the life of an MBA Systems guy, but I specialised in Systems because of my passion for technology...you may do it because of some other reason. Doing my MBA in Systems helped me a lot because prior to that I had only some sort of bookish technical language and my way of thinking was not "Business oriented". I learnt more because of my teachers....my "Software Project Management" prof. is the CEO of an IT company with over 20 years of Project Management experience in Xerox, the person responsible for implementing SAP in Hero Honda taught me "Enterprise Resource Planning" and so on. I seem to be digressing from the topic now and this is becoming more of a Blog post, I'll stop here for now. I'm not sure whether this helped you or not but because you (Mr. thread starter) PM'ed me, I had an obligation to reply. In case you are not satisfied/want more information, you are most welcome to reply on this thread and I'll post back as and when time permits.

Cheers!

Re: MBA Systems - Have done MBA in Systems and is rocking today... - 02-10-2006, 11:50 PM

That was good info!

Mods, How about editing the name of the thread and making it relevant to MBA of all streams? I have seen threads of b-schoolers and how is their life in their respective B-schools, but none of people who have completed their MBA and on with their future life.
A good majority of us write cat without having any proper aim/idea of what is in store. A small desc (the Qs posted by @its_prad are enough to get the reqd desc) of different people who have completed their MBA degree would help others decide what they expect at the end of two years.

Hi Anuragxp, thanks a lot for your valuable inputs, if you can ask more people from Systems background to put there valuable inputs it will help may of the students who wish to take MBA Systems but dosent due to lack of awareness and ninja_talli regarding the name of the thread, i started this Thread due to lack of awareness about MBA Systems in particular and future after doing it so this thread i wanted specifically to Systems Future, while we can start another thread to post info about future after MBA....

Thanks again anuragxp

hey Senoirs

Most of the guys who plan to do an MBA go for Marketing and finance thinking that they r the most rewarding branches regardless of ones inclination.

It is only becoz we r not sure of other streams and we do not want to take risks with our careers
This thread will be an eye opener for us ..pls guide us senoirs so that we can take informed decisions .
Regards

Ricky

Re: MBA Systems - Have done MBA in Systems and is rocking today... - 04-10-2006, 02:33 PM

Well said Anurag.

Was just browsing through the topics and found this one. Having done MBA in System/Mkting, this topic generated a lot of interest in me and I would like to share my profile too -

I am working in a IT product company as customer engagement manager (synonym for Business Analyst) where I am responsible right from the start of the project till the end. Start means making project plan, initial study at the customer site. Then starts System study, SRS preparation and getting it signed off. Then getting the product customized from development team and deploying the same.

Its been only 6 months in the company and I am already handling 4 clients with a development team assigned to me.

Apart from it, I am also involved at Pre Sales activities - filling response for RFPs, giving product demonstrations, handling any tech queries from clients.

My engg background (Computer Engg) and MBA in systems has helped me a lot in understanding lingos of development team as well as of customer. Customer doesnt understand technical things but needs result while development team doesn't understand what customer actually wants andcan only speak tech. But at the end of day, its only how you handle people that matters.

Biggest advantage of being an MBA is the respect you get and the confidence senior management has in you.

MBA in System can give you a upperhand in getting BA profile.

Sajal
