in the question is it the weight of the melon after total dehydration or after 4% decrease in water level | hi dude...
initially weight of the watermelon was 10 kg.
of which 99% (9900 gms) was water
and 1 % was dry part (100 gms)
after a day the water in it reduces to 95 %,
it means the dry part now forms 5 % of the weight of the water melon..
(coz dry part cannot evaporate)
therefore weight of watermelon after the water has dried up.
100/5*100=2000 gms = 2 kg.
I hope this has cleared ur doubts.

it is 99% water earlier ... so
10 kg = 9.9 kg ( water) + .1 kg ( solid)
now after dehydration water is 95% and solid is 5 %...
so 5 % of total (solid) = .1 kg
hence 100 % = 20 * .1 = 2 kg.....

I have here in the attachment all 50 problems from the first set of QQAD 2008.
This is for the benefit of all the people who joined late in QQAD or for that matter whoever likes to solve some good maths problems for CAT. As usual many thanks to Aarav and hoping for much more learning and solving...
While all the problems are very good, my personal favorites are problems 21 and 30.
Note that I have deliberately not attached the solutions to these problems. I didn't want to spoil the fun of solving by giving ready made answers. One can go to this thread (CAT 2008: Quantitative Questions a Day 1 to 50 - The discussions) as you'll get a lot many approaches along with the official solution.
Happy Solving!
