Hey friends,

I also need your help.

I have good spoken and written English, however I have poor spellings. Infact, spelling are such a problem that even for small pieces sometimes I use spell checker. Is there some book that can help me.

I understand that my weakness in spellings arise due to my lack of attention or care in my school days, but I really look forward to improve it.

Do you have some pointers or resources.

Your help will be highly appreciated.

2. Read about grammar rules on your own. Strunk and White’s “The Elements of Style” is the classic book on the subject, but professional writers are also fond of “Working with Words” and “When Words Collide.” Other good options include “Woe is I” by Patricia T. O’Conner and Bill Walsh’s two funny books, “The Elephants of Style” and “Lapsing into a Comma.”

Follow these rules and have super duper grammar skills

I am looking forward to improve my Grammar as well,

I searched about these books an likes Working with Words, The Elephants style, and Lapsing into Comma, as they are looking a non-boring read.\

What do you recommend, should I start with that. Or do you recommend me to first use some standard grammar book and then come to these books ?

More Importantly, Can you help me where I can find these books, I am in India, Pune and I don't feel, these books will be available here, also, amazon is too costly, do you have e-books? can you share,

Your help is very well appreciated.

hi all,
this is my first post. i m preparing 4 CAT08.
VA is my biggest weakness. can ne 1 suggest me how to improve my vocab and RC.
Is it possible to work on both of them together.
whenever i try to read faster i 've to skip all the words whose meaning is not clear 2 me and if 4 every word i open the dictionary i loose the interest in passage.
What shud i do???????????
one more thing,
is it a good idea to mantain a diary and write down the meaning of words which are not clear 2 me, because it consumes alot of time and CAT08 is just 6-7 months away.......
i m lost.
please enlighten me......

Thanks in advance,

It is better late than never . You have to realize that u need to put some additional effort in VA and do more than the usual prep . Maintaining a list is a widely used practice and also very useful . Plan to revise the whole list in short intervals till CAT .

Like you said, maintaining a diary for words you dont know is as good as writing out a dictionary. Firstly, use full spellings when you write or type. That way your sentence formation, grammer and spelling improves. Use words you learn on a daily basis.

Learning a language to proficient levels is all about practice, practice and practice!

Cheers!

One way to improve spoken English in an embarrasment-free-zone is to catch hold of a partner/mentor and set aside a few hours daily to communicate only in English.

Choose a topic that you are familiar with and let yourself go. Don't worry about accent, grammar etc. Just get used to how the language 'feels'. The biggest hurdle to learning a new language is the mental block.

We tend to keep thinking in the language that we are comfortable with and then translate them into English. You'll know you are getting there when your thought process starts shifting as well.
