Comparing two B schools is not encouraged at PG. MDI and IIT-B both are great B schools and both have their advantages.
I think for getting a better idea you can use PM facility.
Few factors which can help you decide:-
1. Stream of specialization in MBA - for eg. if you want to do finance, then find out about professors in both B schools,companies for summer placements (for finance) and of course final placements.
2. Events & Extra-curricular Activities, Guest Lectures - say for eg. XLRI has marketing fair called MAXI-FAIR. Does IIT-B or MDI have any special focus or emphasis on your stream of specialization?

Its always a difficult choice to make as both are great B schools.

What i am doing is not disregarding or disreputing any B school .It's
just as an outsider i really don't know very much in detail

So as far as i am not disreputing any particular B school
I have every right to hear other seniors opinion as well as puys who know both in detail

Just to inform you that such comparision on any thread is not encouraged ...
However you have evry right to know about the insti but use PM facility to do this. Dont do this publicially on any thread or forum.

I know ur nt disreputing any insti..wat they mean is that comparison of B-Schools is not encouraged...esp on the official thread of a college...start a new thread for it if u want...cuz as it is u wudnt get the right perception here...i mean its not correct to ask a clg how it is compared to anodr one

Just as u hv mentioned abt fees and placements, i wd also like to point out that SJMSOM is also a gud place if u aspire to be an entrepreneur... plus the IIT atmosphere and n/w shd b added advantages for anyone studying in SJMSOM.
I am nt in a position to comment for/against MDI so i can just present one side of the story ...that too my version..
Bottomline is that its ur personal decision and plzz dont base it on some B-school ratings... (atleast I wont!!!)

I totally agree with you. After visiting SJMSOM I was wondering quiet a bit on credibility of public polls as they potray a false picture. What more can explain the rank 20 of SJMSOM on pagalguy. Another cue is that govt. colleges facts and figures are never manipulated as is the case with private institutions . So this fact must also be kept into account while making a decision.

I have been following this new discussion. I think the In-Take capacity has also got a lot to determine the rankings for the B-Schools. Moreover the expertise in some field cannot pull the business schools up on the rankings as it happens that one of the best HR School, TISS is un-noticed in all the rankings.
With a batch strength of 80 (approx), its going to be difficult for SJMSOM to be compared with insti's like SPJain, MDI, NM, IMT etc.
Thus I think more than the ranking the industrial contacts of these insti's are more important.
Said that, we, the aspirants do care about the brand names more than anything else.
For this reasons we give these rankings very high importance rather than finding the different parameters those were considered to draw the rankings and also parameter which were overlooked.

I think doubting the credibility may not be the right approach... infact since PG ratings itself showed SJMSOM @20, it means that even B-school aspirants dont perceive SJMSOM as a top notch destination....
May be the school can do with some gud word-of-mouth reviews... also maybe the school mite want to market itself more aggressively within the students(read aspirant) community.. just as it has done with the corporate...

Just my point of view..

Besides placements and fees, there are a lot more significant reasons to be a part of SJMSOM, IIT Bombay.

-Diksha: Guest lecture series where CEOs and MDs are invited to share their knowledge
-Leadership Lectures: Series of lectures organized by the faculty and the students

Brand IIT:


Regarding Brands, although the brand IIT is more known for its technical excellence for its UG course, the brand in itself carries a lot of weight. Its highly regarding in the industry, specially outside India. This helps us to attract excellent faculty and eminent speakers and guests for our seminars. The weight of this brand is palpable when we attend seminars, IIT alumni meets and other similar forums.


Please Note: I have not spoken about the excellent faculty, pedagogy, course content, ability to take courses from other IIT depts etc at SOM. Academics is something which every college would claim to be good at. However, we strongly believe that the academic rigour at SOM is one of the best across bschools in India.

About the rankings, it has been discussed at length how SOM had a significant disadvantage in the PG ranking due to the perception based crowd sourced methodology. We wont discuss that further. At the end of the day, its not the rankings, but the actual quality and the industry perception which matters!

well all the above being absolutely true...as was told to us during the presentationa nd introduction before the start of gd/pi process in the morning...also the kind of student mix we get at iit...not considering the sjmsom individually...but talk about the tech school..btech and mtech ppl..phd ppl and the magagement students...and just step in once the campus itself ur bowled over by it...my special likings r inclined towards the tam tam which is a feature unique in itself...also talk about the alumni nwetwork of iit again...unbeatable...many of other best intitutes in the country would find it difficult to match..

also kindly not go by the rankings too much...every ranking is prepared by considering some criteria as absolute or correct...which itself can b very subjective..in the case og pg rankings they r based on preferences of students etc...magazine ratings are based on the very fact that how many insti's wud pay the mag for considering the instt for the same
