hey everyone,
with the calls for XLRI been declared, i am sure all you aspirants here would be having a lot of queries regarding the process. Do post them and the seniors will try and answer. We have a hectic schedule so the replies may not be prompt.
P.S: go through the thread before posting the queries. Redundant queries and Irrelevant ones like "what weightage is given" will not be answered.
Wish you all luck for the process.

Thanks senior for the initiative. Following are my queries :
1) When are the usual GD,PI dates? (atleast the month)
2) Is the interview asusual i mean is it like any other interview or group interview like SPJain.
3) I have workex of 1.5 yrs in telcom IT company and have 84% acads in my BE. Will i questioned more on my workex or acads or on general business topics, economic issues etc. I know i shd expect in all these things but is it that any one is given more prio?
4) In my last mail, i meant the weightage as such to know whether xat scores plays its part in the final selection also.
sorry to bother u with long list of qns. You can take ur time to reply... ![]()
As Pratik has already mentioned, we would all try to help you as much as possible. And please post only relevant queries as mentioned by Pratik. It takes a lot of time and effort everyday, going through the whole thread and answering each and every query. 😃
That said and done - dude Pratik, you beat me again at starting this thread. 😞 I would request other seniors also to be regulars at this thread. We'll have more bandwidth to take in more number of queries in that case. 😃

here we go.. @trance
1. the GD/PI is usually spread over 2 months depending on the city where you will be giving you interview. i had mine in march. you can expect it to be in feb and march.
2. the interview is like any other interview. XL has not been known to have group interviews.
3. i was a fresher and most of my question were based on general awareness. i wasnt asked any acads watsoever. jus a quant question which was general too. but yet others were asked workex and acads also. its a tough call but i wud say for you its more likely to be work ex or general awareness
4. from my experience i can say that XAT score does play a role in the final selection. how much, i dont know. but it does coz i did not have a very good interview. it was prob my XAT score that helped me thru.
hope that answers ur initial querry :)
@harsh: thr's always another time ;)

I have always thought XLRI had only PI and no GDs. But when I saw the brochure, it mentions "interviews(and/or GDs)". Has this been newly introduced? And to which programs at XLRI is this applicable?

thanks seniors 4 the post

until last year XLRI had only PI. but this year they might have GDs also as mentioned in the brochure. the exact procedure is not known. if there are gds it will be applicable to both the programs i guess

So far so good... I've a few queries myself...
1. Can I expect work-related/industry related questions?
2. Can you give some examples of your own interviews? Better still, can you share some of your own experiences?
3. If any of u ve a personal blog or knows of one/two where we can get to read the interview experiences, it'll be great.
Thanks a lot.
P.S. Thanks to the seniors for this really useful thread.

Here's one I had a lot of fun reading during our process a year back!..
>> Trial by fire...
very vivid accounts, including an XL bloodbath!
Some general interview guidelines(some points are specific to XL):
1. Please do carry a properly formatted, latest copy of your resume to the interview. In the absence of any extra form for the interview(unlike the IIMs), it definitely helps a lot in creating a good initial impression upon the interviewers, along with whatever data you had filled up in your XAT application form. And yes, please do carry atleast 3 copies of it to be distributed to the panelists at the time of your interview, after entering the interview room.
Another point to take care is, that in case you are submitting a copy of your resume to the interviewers, it's a double edged sword - you are inviting the interviewers to ask questions from whatever is mentioned in the resume. And in case, you don't know, anything that you've written in the resume, you might be in big soup. So, please prepare thoroughly for each and every word written in your resume thoroughly.
2. Carry a good quality pen for your interview, to sign at the end of the interview - it just helps to show your meticulousness for the interview and in any case - all's well that ends well.:) Also, a pocket comb is very handy in these circumstances, just before the interview.
3. Wear a proper business suit for the interview, but a decision on wearing a blazer/coat is weather specific - don't overdo it. But, please atleast be there in formals on the day of the interview.
4. Start preparing 4 list of questions for your interviews - one related to your acads, one related to GK/economy/current affairs related questions, one related to why MBA/what kind of career/other HR questions and the last one relating to your work-experience/domain related questions.(This last list would be optional for people without any work-experience.) And yes, to be on the safer side, people with work-experience - please don't neglect the acad related questions. Due to your work-experience, acad related questions may be fewer in number as compared to the work-experience related questions, but nonetheless, they might be there. So prepare for all eventualities. And one thing which I missed out - please do remember the points that you had mentioned in your essay and prepare for questions based on that. I know, it is really difficult to remember the questions, but still, having a general idea about the points mentioned in the essay would help a lot.
5. For the GD(if there is any), I would suggest you start reading all the current affairs thoroughly. Also, there is a booklet distributed by TIME to all it's students who have got calls. Please do go through the techniques in that booklet once before your GD's. Ditto for your interviews - they also distribute a booklet with interview related questions. In case, you have'nt enrolled for TIME, please borrow it from friends who have taken TIME course. Also, IMS booklet had pretty exhaustive set of questions to prepare for GD/interview, so that should serve as icing on the top of the cake.
6. And last but not the least, attend some GD/interview sessions being conducted by the coaching institutes(atleast 3-4 in number, preferably TIME/IMS etc.) for getting guidance regarding your GD/interview related questions. I had attended similar workshops last year and they helpmed me immensely in my preparation. Atleast, among all the coaching institutes, IMS offers free workshops to students who have got calls from the top institutes like IIMs, XLRI, FMS etc. to attend their workshops. You just need to register/tele-register at their helpdesk a day in advance and usually, their advertisement for free workshops are there in newspapers atleast a week in advance.
7. Now the planning part - please contact the coaching institutes today itself to schedule sessions for you. Once the sessions are scheduled, start preparing for the GD/interview sessions, by dividing your time appropriately for each list of questions. For people, who had applied for both the programs - tough luck, as you still don't know what program you have received a call for. For those, who had applied only to one program out of BM/PMIR, start preparing for your interview. Since, acad/career related questions for BM/PMIR differ, please refer to the appropriate interview threads above to see the various kinds of questions asked in different programs. PMIR questions normally have a HR focus, with questions on labour laws, prevailing HR situation etc. along with the normal questions for BM. You could request some PMIR senior here on PG to get your queries answered.
I hope, I have been able to be of some help to you with the general process of GD/interview preparation. A lot of what I have put down here might be already known to most of you, so am sorry for the repetition. Please feel free to contact anyone of us for any future queries regarding the XL GD/PI process.

superb post man!!!
Just a few things to share...
XAT score plays a significant part in the XL procedures, 2 of my seniors breezed thru the interviews with 99+ percentiles..
One was asked to "Ask yourself 5 questions"...Well its not easy as it sounds...
Well yes, your XAT %ile definitely matters - but how much does it matter, even we don't know. Last year, the grapevine was that the weightage was 70% XAT score and 30% interview. But, again all these are just rumours which have no base. Hence the reason, why I have'nt mentioned anything about the individual weightages of the XAT score/interview. And, this year with a GD component as well in the grapevine, all our predictions regarding the weightage of XAT scores/interviews might be wrong.
Once you have got the interview call, the only thing that matters is your GD, interview and the essay that you wrote after XAT. All other things become immaterial. XAT score/Academics/Pedigree might just be the criteria, based upon which you might be given a higher/lower WL or even, whether you are WL or not. I don't think, that for giving a final call, these things play that big role. But, again these are my personal views and I might be wrong. So, please take all the things mentioned in this post with a pinch of salt, at your own risk.
GD/Interviews are primarily meant as a selection round in the admission process at Indian B-Schools and hence, the points for various components - like your communication skills, presence of mind, knowledge about the topics you have covered etc. matters. And, this lends a certain amount of subjectivity to this process, since the points awarded by each prof for the same questions might be different(for those, who have followed my previous posts). So this is where your profile and knowledge matter a lot. Your profile helps in showing a consistency in your career, whereas your knowledge tests you on the soft skills. That said, there is no specific weightage that exists for the profile etc. So, please please focus on your GD/interview at this stage rather than any grapevine, that is going round.
The author absolves himself from any problems arising out of any of the facts mentioned in this post. It is the risk of the reader, whether to follow them or not. Enough caution has been exercised by the author in expressing his views.
