Grid computing joins many individual computers, creating a large system with massive computational power that far surpasses the power of a handful of supercomputers. Because the work is split into small pieces that can be processed simultaneously, research time is reduced from years to months. The technology is also more cost-effective, enabling better use of limited funds. World Community Grid is overseen by an advisory board consisting of experts from foundations, academia, and public agencies. Projects include those focused on human disease such as HIV/AIDS, cancer, and Dengue Fever as well as ones focused on the environment. Future projects will address issues such as treatments for infectious disease (SARS, malaria and others), or challenges relating to natural disasters and hunger (earthquake predictions, improving crop yields, evaluating the supply of critical natural resources).
