Hi All,

Converted ABCLK. Have my home in Cal and not very averse to spending a couple of years near home, after 6 yrs (BE-4 + Oracle-2) away, and probably the rest of my life. Looking for good reasons either ways to select from A and C. 😐

I know A is considered best, but can we have a point by point bashing of strength and weaknesses of both, just to convince me I made the best choice.

Any sorta replies are welcome

Thanks,
Mayank

Hi Mayank,
seems like Oracle is making waves :- Me too made it to BC.

Ummm...Choosing between A & C...i would go for A...

What im sure is that its difficult to mention points where either A or C is much better than the others...the differences are marginal and wont effect the average students directly in anyway...

Placements : A has some 5-6 companies which come only to A..so you would have a chance of 10-12 prestigious jobs---but out of 260 those 12s are.... hmm.....:)

Acads : Heard that A is rigorous..but then who is scared of that ...and even in C attendance have been made compulsary....im sure this would disappoint many !
Anyway, you have to slog at any IIM ...14 hours or 16...does it really make a diff ??

Students : No comments

Reputation: This is where IIM A scores...

Hostel/Food : i guess it must be the same

Weather : its hot everywhere except for Bangalore :)

Home : C might attract you more due to this...and i think it would be correct if you decide to stay in Calcutta for that....

Basically, both ways it makes sense....A becoz its A and C bcoz its close to your home...

There seems nothing to debate upon!

Mohit

Thanks Mohit,

Pretty subjective analysis, but atleast someone is thinking.

Point.
Counterpoint: that takes the best 10-12 of the best out of the fray from the other 'average' offers, right? Point: A

umm .. if you get 3 hours of sleep .. i guess 2 hours make a 66% diff. Point: C

nothing to be said. Point: A

Help guys !!!

Thanks,
Mayank.

Hi,

I'm not a guy who had faced the same tough choice But i'd pick A over C anytime!

I like the rigour that A has. Think that would improve general standard of the class. C has some superbrains - real ubergeeks  But the avg student would gain a lot more out of the program at A, just bcoz he is forced 2 The reason C lost out 2 A at the rankings has been precisely due to this and that is y they r trying 2 change now.

As 4 hostel food, the feedback from the junta is that A has the worst food among the IIMs. Between food at A, B and K - definitely A has the worst (i've been 2 all three)!

As 4 C being close 2 home, dunno if that should really sway ur choice. One of my classmates at K has his home in calicut. But the guy goes home once a month or sthng. Bcoz u can't afford 2 stay out of campus on many weekends - god knows what might happen while u r away! A quiz might be announced, a case may be given - who knows

So i'd vote 4 A !!! And almost everyone i know would, except if the were scared of the supposedly tough schedule at A

Ravi

Thanks Ravi. That helped a bit.

I really am looking for a healthy debate on this A/C/B thingie ... I beg to differ from few friends on the A/B/C thread, who are opposed to discussing options. I believe that if you do have options you gotta make the best choice, obviously also taking in your personal considerations.

Its not as if you were trying to crack CAT and once you're thru either of ABC, the comparison becomes taboo. In fact, it makes all the more sense when you have some basis for discussing this. Since before that, you really had nothing to choose from!!

Looking for replies ...
Mayank

I'm waitlisted 4th at IIMA!!

Any guesses on what I would advise you Mayank??....:)

Cheers!!
-Gaurav

Gaurav, you are not eligible for comments

Haha!!...dude..go for A..except for the hometown factor that C has in your case...A scores over C in almost every other dept...faculty, placements, library facilities etc.
Anyways..i'm off to my iiml threads..:)
Cheers!!
Gaurav

What about specialisation mayank?? 2 years in Oracle seems to say that you would be inclined towards systems.. Not necessarily though 😛 If thats ur choice then Cal seems a better option .

What say Gaurav

gb thsts a very good idea but i guess even i am not eligible for any comments in here

well, systems is a very strong contender (thats all I know upto this point in time!!). But finance is a very close second. Frankly I am unbiased on my choice for specialisation - except that I know its not gonna be marketing!

does that evoke any ideas?

Hey Manav ...me too from BIT,Mesra (1998 passout though )

SO you wanna specialize in Fin & Systems ...why do I smell IIMC all over your choices BTW ..In IIM's you can have dual specializations and the combo of Fin + Sys is best in IIMC .
IIMA is great in Fin but not too sure about it's systems prowess

Hope you make an informed choice (and we meet in IIMC )

Sanju
