There are a few qualities common to not just successful MBAs but all successful people. If you possess most of these qualities and can work towards developing some, you are in very good shape. Leadership skills is perhaps the most important one.

Do you think leaders are born or made?

I strongly believe that some leaders are born, and they have and instinctive ability to inspire and lead people. They have a natural positivity around them with which they affect others and make others see their point of view. However with time, patience and hard work you can develop yourself to inculcate these qualities of a leader:

1. Self confidence

2. Lead by example: Show others how things are done rather than giving orders.

3. Delegate work effectively

4. Motivate people to perform to the best of their ability

5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills: ability to put across your point and also listen effectively.

6. Possess loads of integrity

7. Excellent team skills- support your team in their endevours and common goals.

Hi to all the fellow members. I am fairly new to this site and world of b schools too. I have certain queries which i need help on.Any help would be really appreciated. I have just started preparing for CAT 13 , now i know i only have 3 months while students take 1 year or so to prepare. I am a chartered accountant by profession and i have an exp of 1.5 years in a CA firm (not big four). I am looking for a boost to my career so i have decided to pursue MBA, but only top 20 b schools is my aim. So my questions are :

1. With the fairly low scores in 12th and 10th can i think of being selected in top b schools..?

2. Can i prepare well for CAT 13 with the ltd time left...?

3. how much weightage is given to school marks by b schools...?

4. is my CA qualification and work-ex is at all considered anywhere in addmission process..?

Hello,

Good afternoon.
I am planning to take the GMAT either in december this year or in January 2014. I wanted some guidance on this.
My profile is as follows:
10th SSC - 82.15%, 12th HSC - 77.5%, Graduation BMS - 80.83%.
My extra curriculars include participation in my college's students council, volunteering with an NGO, factory visits, company visits for various projects.
I have 12 months work ex with a finance consulting firm where I handled HR and admin aspect. Since it is a small firm there has been some contribution in terms of HR and Admin. Apart from that I have 2 months with a private bank working as an HR Executive and currently into my family business which is into construction.
I wish to do specialisation in HR and wanted some advise on the following:
1. Which schools should I focus on?
2. Will this profile be good enough, if not then how do I improve my profile?
3. What to do in order to meet the criterion of 4 years of graduation ( My BMS graduation is only 3 years)?

Thank you.

Hello Guys, just some feedback on Mansie. I have had her as my coach for about a month now.Hired her after reading her book, "Destination MBA". Together we almost finished the INSEAD application and are starting on LBS. I have a 750 GMAT, good acads and 4yrs of manufacturing management work ex with 2yrs+ abroad. I was initially lost after finishing my GMAT and seeing so many options , so many things to find out, to understand before evn starting my apps. Mansie helped me thru all that, helped me select my schools: INSEAD, LBS, Said, Judge, IE, ESADE. I have had a lot of great experiences and accomplishments in my career, but shes the one who taught me how to present them. She also helped ame a lot in my LoRs, and picked me up when I felt hopeless regarding the reco situation. Overall, a great experience.

This is not advertising, and I am not affiliated with her or anything, this is just to share some review regarding coaches from a genuine user, that might help others in selecting theirs. Hope I am not breaking any rules here. Do PM me if you want to know anything, or if my post is not ok.

Team skills:

Team skills are an absolute must. You must be a team player and contribute to any team effort without reservations. During the MBA and career post MBA:

You will be required to interact with people from different backgrounds and cultures.

You will need to effectively communicate and collaborate with this diverse group towards team goals.

A good team player puts the team's cause ahead of his own. With a great team spirit, he or she generally enjoys a very warm and friendly rapport with fellow members, which stems from good interpersonal skills and sensitivity to others. He or she generally has an ability to communicate well across all levels in a hierarchy. He recognizes that each member is a vital component of the team and this recognition along with communication goes a long way in ensuring team success. A majority of learning in an MBA setting takes place in a team setting, so you must possess good team skills.

Focus: How are you ever going to achieve your goals if you do not know what they are? You must have a specific idea towards the direction in which you want your career to move. That means you should:

Know what kind of business school you want to attend.

Have a general idea about your career direction.

Be single-mindedly focused towards gaining rich work experience.

Quite honestly, be like a tiger that smelled blood and run after it.

Focus towards all the goals you set for yourself is a very primary component of a successful person. Please sit down and ponder upon what is important to you. List down your strengths, weaknesses and your aspirations. Also think objectively about the areas in which you need to improve. Taking professional help can help you tremendously in chartering the next course of action. First decide what you want to do and then doggedly put in efforts.

Outstanding communication skills: If you want to succeed in your MBA dream, you must have excellent communication skills. You must be proficient in getting across your ideas clearly and concisely. You should be able to read, write, hear and speak the language well. I have seen numerous candidates over the years of my experience get rejected at the interview stage, only because they lack in communicating effectively. A professional consultant can polish your essays, help you with your application but you cannot avoid the moment of truth- interview time!!

Please note that here, I do not mean that you should have superior vocabulary or know everything, but at least have a good grasp over the language. You aspire to study and work in a global environment. It is only fair that you be able to operate smoothly, work well in a team setting and more importantly understand the course and also be able tackle your assignment and assessments. Admissions committees are not harsh when they demand good language skills. They are very realistic. So, if your language skills need work, please plan in advance and start diligent practice. Mastering your communication is not a few days work; it takes some time. If you are an otherwise promising candidate with excellent academic prospects and bright future, I would hate for you to get left behind only because you lack here. You might need professional help, please do not be afraid to seek it and explore your options!

Here is a valuable tip- People who are effective communicators oftentimes use the KISS principle. This principle was designed by Kelly Johnson, a Lead Engineer at the Lockheed Skunk Works.

KISS: Keep It Simple and Straightforward. The trick is that less is always more and good communication is most effective when economical!

So far, we have talked about Communication skills, Leadership, Focus and Team skills- 4 important traits in an MBA aspirant. We will be covering 10 IMPORTANT personality traits required to succeed in an MBA and career.....one each day.
