Kalakar Vikas
The distinguished Kalakaar Vikas makes Purvodaya'12 all the more unique! Starting from 2nd to 4th November, 2012, the Tech Market Puja Ground, IIT Kharagpur will be all set to give the guests a visual treat through the marvelous works of the artisans from different parts of India and help preserve the diversity of art that forms an integral part Indian culture. In 2011, it provided a platform for artisans and craftsmen from Bengal, Orissa and the nearby regions to showcase their work of art which came in the form of outstanding creations like jewellery made of buffalo horns, jute sandals, wood carving, terracotta craft paintings, clay models so on and so forth. The event turned out to be a Celebration of Art and Creativity, with stalls throbbing with from all over India appreciating and endorsing the work of the artists. Workshops for micro-insurance and other creative skills were also conducted for these artisans to promote sustainability.

SRIJAN
Promoting the spirit of Innovation and Entrepreneurship amongst the students of B-schools across the country is the objective of SRIJAN - VGSoM's Annual Business Plan Competition. This will provide a unique opportunity for budding management graduates to pitch their business ideas to venture capitalists and investors. Srijan will enable you to take your ideas to the next level. The viability of your ideas shall be judged, mentors will guide you to improve upon your business plans and you will have a chance to showcase your ideas and B-plans in front of angel investors and venture capitalists.

The challenges of working in a consulting firm are immense and the skill set needed to identify and solve business problems of clients is diverse. The idea is to sensitize students to real life business situations and to develop their analytical and presentation skills.

ABHISAMAYA is the flagship panel summit on Supply Chain & Operations which will be organized by SCOPE during PURVODAYA'12. “WIRED” – Social Networking for a Social Cause


Greetings from Saamanjasya and Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur. It gives us immense pleasure to announce the advent of WIRED, an online social networking event under Purvodaya 2012 - Our annual Business festival.
Creativity meets Web 2.0! VGSOM brings to you a Grand Ground Event ONLINE. So pull up your socks and partake in spreading awareness for a social cause.
Contestants will be provided with a list of social causes. They need to choose a cause and promote it through their pages/ communities. The pages created by the contestants should inculcate both; a sense of competition as well as an urge for social awareness. Along the course of the event, there will be windows for individual tasks, where the contestants get to exhibit their creativity. Teams will be judged on the basis of their creativity, reach and performance in individual tasks, as well as the level of activity and reach of their pages/communities.
This is what you need to do :
- CHOOSE from a list of socially relevant causes provided to you.
- CREATE a social networking page/community with your take on the subject at hand.
- CHANNEL all the data you can find about the cause on one page. Keep posting relevant information and keep your wall active. You will have opportunities to showcase multiple skills like video making, article writing, etc
- COERCE people into joining your cause, do whatever it takes, launch a viral marketing campaign, get the maximum fans/members you can to the profile page.

Increasing sanitation coverage in rural areas would require more clarity of the issue and understanding of the rural sensibilities. For example 'Building toilets' is just one half of the battle; the other half is to make people use them. It is high time that we need to scale up rural sanitation and hygiene.
4. Waste Management
Waste that is not properly managed can create serious health or social problems in a community. Messy yards and streets can have a bad affect on the attitudes of local people. It can also be hard to get people - such as nurses and trades people - to work or live in a community where the environment looks untidy or unsafe.

Promoting the spirit of Innovation and Entrepreneurship amongst the students of B-schools across the country is the objective of Srijan – the Annual Business Plan Contest. This will provide a unique opportunity for budding management graduates to pitch their business ideas with venture capitalists and investors. For those who dream to be their own bosses, for those who dare to think different, here is your chance! Unleash the budding entrepreneur in you and take one step forward in fulfilling your dream. Srijan is a business plan competition that will enable you to take your ideas to the next level. The viability of your ideas shall be judged, mentors will guide you to improve upon your business plans and you will have a chance to showcase your ideas and B-plans in front of angel investors and venture capitalists.

Direct entry into Empresario - IIT KGP's B-Plan Competition that provides Incubation Support upto 2.5 crores.
Event Structure:
• The participating teams need to send a 3-page Executive Summary of their business ideas latest by 18th October 2012.
• After the first round of submission, 5 best entries will be selected in terms of originality and viability of the business plans.
• The selected teams will be assigned mentors for their B-Plans who will guide them for 10 days to streamline their ideas. The participants are required to make optimum utilization of the mentoring process so as to create an appropriately refined B-Plan.
• The teams will then have to be present at VGSoM, IIT Kharagpur during Purvodaya '2012 for the final round, to present before the judging panel.
• Top 2 teams will then be selected who will be judged in terms of innovativeness in their ideas, and the business acumen and holistic vision in their business plans.
• The winning teams will receive prize money and certificates. Also they will be the direct finalists at IIT Kharagpur's Annual B-Plan competition, Empresario.
• Empresario is the annual Business Plan competition organized by E-Cell, IIT Kharagpur. The participants get mentored by some top notch professionals in the field from all over the world. Apart from a whopping 6 lakh rupees prize money the winning teams receive, they also get to pitch in front of India's biggest VCs through the elevator pitch organized by E-Cell, IIT Kharagpur as a part of Global Entrepreneurship Summit in the month of January every year.

Rules and regulations:

• The font size to be used for the executive summary is Arial/10 pt.

An Experience Unforgettable

India, a nation that symbolizes “Cultural Diversity” is the nest of the world's largest variety of art forms, some of them dating back to centuries. While the age of globalization has seen India's stellar growth in various spheres, it has also seen some of the most ancient art forms of India fading into oblivion. In the nooks and corners of rural India, live many such artists whose only source of pride and income is the art that they have carried forward through ages. We, the students of VGSoM came up with this initiative called Kalakaar Vikas to rejuvenate these dying art forms by these traditional artists with a wider platform for acceptance and sustenance.

Teams are required to undertake a brand association study so as to identify the most relevant brand attributes for Spykar and create a Brand Association Map.
Please choose the sample of the study, diverse enough, to capture the perceptions of all current consumer segments served by Spykar India.
The deliverables expected:
• A write-up(pdf, max.200 words) about the insights capturedregarding thekey brand attributes of Brand Spykar.
• Brand association map developed highlighting the key attributes.
• Transcripts of study conducted as appendix.

The Entrepreneurship Cell of VGSoM has been set for the cause of promoting entrepreneurship among VGSoM students. The E-Cell team focuses on inviting various eminent entrepreneurs to deliver lectures to educate students about the joys and hardships of entrepreneurship and conducting Guest Lectures, Business Plan workshops, Case study workshops, Knowledge Camps, Patent workshops etc. throughout the year to involve students in activities that are essential to an entrepreneur.The Cell also plans to tie up with organizations in the future to incubate start-up ideas by linking the right investors with the right entrepreneurs and hence being associated with such organizations will be highly beneficial to VGSoM in the long run.

Finterest: The Finance Club of VGSoM

Mission: “To be a center of excellence in management education and research catering to the needs of organizations in different sectors of the economy with special emphasis on technology driven and knowledge based industries that are characterized by high degrees of globalization, dynamism, complexity and innovation”.
Knowledge Sharing Sessions :
Finterest has organized many a knowledge sharing sessions' so as to simulate the learning process, more so apart from the text books.
● The sessions have been conducted on varied subjects, viz. on latest happenings in Industry & Market, analysis of deals which might have a far reaching consequences etc.
● The senior batch students have had shared their internship experiences (those with Finance profiles) with the juniors in interactive sessions prior to the Summer Placements.
● An online session was also arranged through Skype about the Bloomberg Test.
● Our efforts to sensitized students about the various Certifications of International repute in the Finance domain, viz. CFA, FRM, PRM etc have started bearing fruits.Six students from our senior batch have cleared CFA Level-1 exam.
● All these initiatives have aided the students to get know how about the Finance domain in a manner that is shade closer to the real world.
Fincon :
FinCon'12 was a finterest initiative to bring together the industry stalwarts and management students on a common platform to understand the challenges and opportunities these turbulent times provide.The event was a great success and achieved its objective, it also gave a platform to VGSoM students to showcase their ability and also understand industrial perspective towards real life challenges and roadblocks.

NSE SEBI Seminar:
In March 2012, Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT kharagpur became one of the few B-schools in the country to host stalwarts from SEBI, NSE and HDFC AMC as a part of the SEBI-NSE regional InvestorSeminar. The NSE-SEBI regional seminar received amazing response; more than 200 students participated in the seminar. The seminar enlightened the students about the need and feasibility of investing in the capital markets and discussed its advantages over more traditional methods of savings in our country.

The confidence gathered after the successful issues' of our newsletter, Fin-O-Menal, prompted Finterest with the idea of publishing a magazine pertaining with the Financial sector. This year we came up with the third edition of our magazine “Mark2Market” which was received with great enthusiasm .It contained students articles from premium B-schools of India .Our faculty and industry stalwarts'articles also added massive value to the magazine.
Brown Bag Session:
In continuation with the trend of brown bag sessions, Finterest organised three more sessions this year. These were students driven discussion sessions. The first was one on“Rating Agencies Demystified”. This session was held in the wake of downgrading of sovereign debts of multiple countries by the biggest credit rating agencies of the world.The second session was on the “Union budget 2012-13” catered to the most significant announcements made in the budget and their potential implications on the nation and the industry as whole.For the third session, Sumit Pal Singh shared his experience at the Competition Commission of India, where he worked on assessing the state of competition in the cement industry in India.The topic was especially lucrative given the orders (in June and July) of the Competition Commission against 12 cement manufacturers in India in the case of cartelization.
Gurukool Series Of Lectures:
"A Day in the life of an Investment Manager" By Praveen Kumar, Investment Manager - Baillie Gifford.
Mr Kumar gave a brief introduction about Baillie Gifford and explained bottom-up approach to invest in a stock. We had an interactive session with him in which he shared his interesting insight o n Indian market.
He shared the general strategy followed by the fund managers of the leading investment management firms.

Round 2:
• Shortlisted teams are required to come to IIT Kharagpur campus and give a final presentation to the jury members comprising Tata Steel representatives (sponsors) & VGSoM faculty, on 4th November
• The presentation should include feasibility analysis, implementation roadmap and cost-benefit estimates
• Each team will be given a slot of 20 minutes (15 minutes to present their solution, 5 minutes for Question and Answer session by the jury members).
• The jury will evaluate the solutions and declare the Winner and the two Runner Up teams

Round 1
Teams comprising of 2 members are required to participate in an online quiz to be conducted on 27th October, 2012. The teams need to complete all questions and submit their entries as early as possible.
1. The quiz will comprise of 25 questions to be answered in 30 minutes.
2. There will be differential marking for the questions.
3. The markings would be mentioned for each question.
4. There will be no negative marking.
5. Tie-breakers would not be entertained and in these situations the team submitting first would be selected.
6. Only one entry and first submission would be considered per team.
The first round is elimination and the top 6 teams would be selected to battle it out for th second round.
Round 2
Round 2 will be conducted at the VGSoM, IIT Kharagpur campus on 4th November, 2012 in the presence of the judges. Both team members need to be present on spot for the final round.
**Travel reimbursements would be given to the team members for travelling to the campus.
Rules:
1. The event is open to all- undergraduates, postgraduates and doctoral students from any academic or non-academic institution.
2. A team can consist of at most two members and the members must be from the same institute/ organization.
3. A person can be a part of only one team; if s/he is later found to be a part of multiple teams then all the team of which he is a part will be disqualified.
4. Final round will be on campus for 6 shortlisted teams.
5. The decision of the judges is final and binding.

In general, acquisitions can be horizontal, vertical, or conglomerate .So continuing with the finance legacy, Purvodaya is presenting before you Synergie (M&A; ADVISORY).Here you will have to put yourself in the shoes of an investment banker and pitch for a merger or acquisition deal in the best interests of the company.
Round 1

8)The criteria for selecting the target company will also be emailed to the registered teams.
9)The analysis should be submitted in Power Point Presentation, not exceeding 15 slides excluding the cover page.
10)The Cover Page of the presentation should have the name of the team, Institute, names of the members, mail ids and contact numbers.
11)Teams can send an excel workbook showing all calculations, if any, along with the presentation.
12)The entries should be mailed to [email protected] with the naming convention: Synergie__ by 26th October 2012, 11:59:59 PM.
13)The presentation should be inclusive of, but not limited to, rationale behind selecting the bidding and target companies, valuation of the target company before the deal and valuation of the combined entity after the deal.
14)The result for the first round will be declared on 28th October 2012. Six teams will be selected based on the quality of the analysis and research done.

2)Each team will be given a slot of 20 minutes for their presentation.
3)Prizes worth Rs30000 to be won.
4)All the participants coming to IIT campus will be given a Flip course discount coupon of 10% which can be availed against any course offered by FLIP.
5)All the selected teams will be provided with travel Reimbursement* and free accommodation at IIT Kharagpur.
*Travel reimbursement up to Rs1000 or actuals per team whichever is lower.

Round 1
1) Participation is open to all graduate/post graduate/mba students with 2 participants per team. Two members per team to be from same college
2) Registration opens from 19th October 2012.
3) The market will be open from 9am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday, during which the stocks under NSE can be traded.
4) There will be fixed cash limit available for trading.
5) Stocks can either be traded on a delivery basis (to be kept for holding after end of the day) or intraday basis (to be squared off by the end of the day).
6) For Intraday trade the transaction can either be BUY trade or SHORT SELL trade and the positions will be automatically squared off at end of the day if not done earlier.
7) There will be Brokerage charges for the trades.
8) The profits earned is calculated as (Profit from trade €“ Brokerage Charge)
9) Trading will happen for a fixed number of days.
10) The participants will be ranked based on the profits earned.
11) The top 5 teams based on the profits earned at the end of the period will be asked to come down to VGSOM and give presentation
Round 2
1) The selected team will give a presentation at VGSOM explaining the analysis and rational behind their trades and selection of stock portfolio.
2) In this final evaluation, a weightage will be assigned to all rounds and evaluation of winners will be carried out by combining the scores across all rounds.

LEADER's CHALLENGE
LEADER's CHALLENGE is a national level competition for developing innovative product lines for a market leader in a yet unexplored market segment. The event will be organized by MAD, the Marketing and Advertising Club of VGSoM, IIT Kharagpur. The objective of the event is to generate ideas about a new product for a market leader building on their strengths and brand values, and then accordingly make plans for brand positioning, risk analysis, feasibility and SWOT analysis, financial analysis and overall business and marketing strategy for it. The idea is to sensitize students to real life business situations and to develop their analytical and presentation skills.
