Ok sirjee...

Yea, i Think u r right. Here goes.

My process was scheduled at IISC Bangalore at 1 PM... we were asked to report half an hour earlier... being the apprehensive fellow, I reached there at 11.30 !:tellme: And the process finally took off at 3 PM....

Started with a presentation about VGSOM by the student coordinators: Anusha(agog on pagalguy) and 2 other ppl... Then we were divided into batches of 16 ppl each... :crazyeye: and taken for the GD..

The GD was a case study. About bajaj auto, which planned to close down one factory, move work to another... We were given 10-15 mins for discussion after which we had to speak for a min approx... and then write points in 3 minutes.

The case: Bajaj auto plans to close down a facility in Pune bcos of high running costs, no tax benefits in the state, ageing workforce, etc. This plant manufactures scooters right now which are being planned to move to pantnagar, a modern plant with tax benefits and latest machinery. The pune plant prev manufactured motorcycles also which were shifted to aurangabad(3rd plant). Bajaj has a total of 4 plants, the 4th one being in chakan(near pune) and which is a benchmark of efficiency, profit et al. Manufacturing at the pune plant is costlier than that at pantnagar plant by 5000-6000 per bike.

My point: No Tax benefits are applicable to chakan also(near pune so most prob in Maharashtra)... so how come its not effected?

Now, the GD was a complete horror(in fact, it was a group brawl...a GB, if I must say.) That was partly expected bcos of the numer of ppl...

3 or 4 times the student coordinators rang a bell to silence the group... I got one point in luckily when there was silence... and after that I did not even try.

We were seated around a conference table with seats having attached boards. There was one smart chap who removed the board and conveniently hogged the conf table itself, blocking another guy out of the complete process as if he didnt exist at all... Fortunately the other guy was a very blessed fellow bcos if this had happened to me the smarta** would have had it. This guy was asked to sit a little backwards by the student coordinator but he followed that for 10 seconds only...

The discussion too was being treated like an extempore by him, only speaking himself and not letting anybody else speak.

Another funny thing about him was he didnt even stop speaking after being told to do so by the faculty during the 1 minute speaking session !

Next came the PI...

The same two profs P1, an aged prof who looked very knowledgeable and P2, relatively younger and the one who asked all the questions...

C - chomu... a.k.a me

P - so what are ur extra currics
C - none... eeps kya bolun.... hobbies hee bata dee..
P - what books u read... read white tiger?
C - Fortunately had read... so discussed about it in detail...
P - What effect does current market scenario have on ur comp
C - gyaan (project loss, etc etc)
P - what is recession?
C - told but messed up quarters - 2 is actual i told 3-4, but said wasnt sure...
P - What is diff between real gdp growth and nominal gdp growth
C - Even after reading this one, i forgot... such a dimwit  said dunno but perhaps this...
P - it is this waise, nothing to do with all that
P - Why u want to leave comp after so much workex
C - sum random gyaan...
P - P started smiling at a point and said, say na MBA will help u get sum good job etc..
C - I said yessir and also i want to pursue a career in corp finance...
P - OK u know about it?
C - yes... sum gyan
P - thats one view, there are many other things also like... (i knew these but didnt get the time to speak)
Anyways, u r clear abt what u want, thats good... All the Best...

This is how it ended...
Thanks to the student coordinators and VGSOM ( even after the 3 hour delay... bcos atleast u came to Bangalore and didnt call us to Kharagpur 😃 )

Comments please..

PS - my JMET Rank 631
28 months of workex in IT - Finance domain till now...
B.tech (IT)
Ok sirjee...

Yea, i Think u r right. Here goes.

My process was scheduled at IISC Bangalore at 1 PM... we were asked to report half an hour earlier... being the apprehensive fellow, I reached there at 11.30 !:tellme: And the process finally took off at 3 PM....

Hey dude which panel were u in... I had my interview at the same time and venue...
Atleast they give u a positive response otherwise the IIT profs can reap u apart...

I had a very bad experience in my GD-PI I am afraid.
The process started with doc verification and presentation etc...
Then the GD-PI.
I did well in the 1 min monologue...(good points I brought in)
Later in the open house (following the monologue) everyone started screaming and there were often 3 to 4 people talking at the same time..
I did quite badly I am afraid..Only made 1 or 2 points and was often cut short...

Now comes the worst part...
I was no 13 in the PI...
The person started with tell me about yourself..
Then he asked why was my class 12th marks screwed.
What other calls I have.
A little bit about biking(I had mentioned it )
and what is torque..
Bash...that's it...any questions for us(I asked him about 6 months interns) and kicked out..
Of course I am not selected...reason being my class 12th marks...
But I have 3.6 years of work ex and it was a long time back...How long do I suffer for my class 12th marks...
I know I am raving but I was the saddest after this interview..
Every single guy and gal had a 15 to 20 mins interview and I was kicked out in 5 mins...
My marks were there before also..I know I am not a pundit and I probably do not measure upto vgsom's standards but then I should not have been called.
Just having fun at the expense of a dim-wit(yours truly) is not justified whether he is a iit ,iim or harvard prof...

p.s Sorry for the long rave.

To all the gents and ladies good luck in your interview and do well...

I had a very bad experience in my GD-PI I am afraid.

Of course I am not selected...reason being my class 12th marks...

well not really dude... If you were able to make a mark during the GD then I think the profs would have got it... As per the 12th Marks... its better not to bother about the things which are not in our hands... With the amount of work-ex u do stand a fair chance.. just keep ur fingers crossed...

Had my gd pi yester at kgp itself morning batch.....It was a very cool affair....
GD was a case study on Hero Honda....how the honda company had come to india when there was a boom in the motorcycle sector but they decided to enter the scooter market in collaboration with a few local companies. After 5 years of creating a name for themselves they launched a very flashy bike. We were supposed to discuss this.
1 min monologue followed by 10 mins of discussion.11 ppl in the grp.
Had a decent enough monologue was asked to speak first.gd was also decent enough managed to enter 3-4 times with good points.

Interview was a very cool affair for me atleast. no acads questions.was grilled on my sop. the panelists were very cool and friendly. i became a little too friendly with them.shouldve been a little more formal i guess.

they started with introduce yourself
me:gyan gyan gyan.wanted to take the interview to my strong points so ended it with an interest in football and so they asked me bout that next

then was asked about the qualities of a good manager that i had.
gave them gyaan about good communication skills and crisis management skills.

asked me about my hoobies about music i listen to
me:LP rulz

then asked me a few weird ques:-A blunt knife and a sharp knife of the same material are used to cut a substance. the blunt knife does it while the sharp knife cant.reply as a mechanical engineer..
me::tellme::crazyeye:

then showed me a stop watch asked me how physics and how much mechanical engineering is involved in this.
me: gave gyaan.

then asked me if i had done any training.
me: told him about my summer project.
grilled on that.gave a full desciption.

then asked about my marks in a few subjects that i had scored well in especially english and computers
me: replied and told instances of y i got such good marks.
both were laughing.

then was asked about if i read i said a bit told them about angels and demons .
was asked y did i like it.
gave loads of gyaan.

had organised a stock market game in my college tech fest so was asked about the stock market replied decently well.

in the end the maam said i needed to find out a bit more about what being a manager involved that i concentrate more on the soft skills not the core skills.

seriously dunno what to make of it.

puys seniors are welcome to comment...:tellme:

Any idea when the gd pi is ending and when are the final list expected dates.....

Here comes my experience:

As told by maxell the process started late and the presentation was followed by a case study about bajaj auto moving their operations from Akurdi(Pune) to Pantnagar (Uttarakhand) owing to tax benefits, ageing workforce in Akurdi and amny more... two more plants were described which were all in Maharashtra... The profits were given arising out of such arrangements.... The starling thing was that the case study did not described any problem explicity, there was not protagonist and no dilemma described... Thus it was an open ended discussion which u have to carry forward by ur presumptions n asumptions :p...
Was 16th in the panel of 16 :crazyeye:... and had to sit in one corner of the U sahped conf table... the guy ahead of me was leaning in front but i was able to get myself noticed.... ... 5 mins for readin the case... followed by 1 min monologue... person chosen randomly... I was 2nd from last in this too.... :crazyeye:.. by the time most of the points were finished but i was able to bring some new perspectives and was gud (i felt)... It was followed by a 10-15 min GD... The GD was gud.. people have a lot of points to discuss most were pertaining to the things they have said at the monologue... not a fish market... was feeling left out at extreme as the discussion was conc with the guys in middle berths... but managed to chip in few times with relevant point and was ablr to have the silence for a few mins ... The moderator stopped us after 10-12 mins and commented it to be a gud discussion... It ended at 4:50 or 5 p.m

Now the turn of PI was again the last so had to wait for long.. finally got to go in at around 7:50 - 8 p.m...

Panelist we'll refer them as I (Industrial Engg guy), O(Other), Me:angel:

Me: Gud eve sir (shuld have told them gud nite seeing the time)

I: what is MPFI

Seemed satisfied... I thought the interview is going right.. then

I: So what is VMI
Me: Vendor managed inventory...
I: what is it
Me: told
I: do u know of any firm using this concept
Me: sorry sir
I: COAL India ltd...
I: why is it used
Me: told the advantages
I: No No.. i want the basic philosophy...
Me: :tellme? Then said something about risk sharing, more focus on core competency, less cost blah blah... told them the ex of COAL india only... but by mistake uttered coal as explosive substance
I: started laughing, N followed.. told me coal is not at all explosive...
Me: sorry sir i meant highly inflammable
I: do u know why explosives are used in coal industry....
Me: sir for digging the mines
I: yes... and its not highly inflammable too.. have u ever burned a coal fire...
Me: yes...
I: gave some more gyan
I: So, the basic philosophy
Me?
I: that is the basic of supply chain mgmt...why do we use supply chain mgmt.. why is it gaining so much emphasis
Me: (actually have done a proj on supply chain mgmt).. told them some gains... were nt satisfied...
I: no no.. then they themselves told... giving some more gyan on Prod planning, JIT, Kaizen n what not
N: have u heard abt bull-whip effect
Me: told them the rough thing
N: who does it impact more
Me: the production unit

Me: its cool sir..
N: asked how long u have been in Mysore..
Me: told..
N: trained there
Me: no in chd
N: why:
Me: told
N: so do u feel the effect of recession
Me: told yes, some tightening, cost cutting measures, Performance trackers n all... linked with US market so bound to happen...
N: okay.. sp u r free to catch ur Mysore bus.. all the best.. So if u dnt have any ques for us we can wind up
Me: sir just that when can we expect the results?
N: in 1-2 week of April, most probably before 8th
Me: Thank you sirs n have a gud night...

Please refrain from asking queries here.. this thread is solely meant for GD/PI experiences sharing and discussion

U can find ur answers here : VGSOM GD/PI Helpdesk

Hey thanks for posting your GD/PI experiences. Other people will get an idea regarding the process. All the best to people whose GD/PI is yet to be over.

hi Seniors, do v hav HRM specialisation in VGSOM?? thanxxx

Hey Puys,

Posting my experience again for next year's benefit as I had earlier posted it on the GD/PI helpdesk thread

I had my VGSOM Gd/PI process at IISc Bangalore today 8:00AM..supposed to report half an hour early ..Reached at 7:05..Had to wait a lot till 8:20 when the Document collection started..After that we had a presentation by Prof Gautam Sinha and a video was shown titled "Life @ VGSOM"

Got to meet Arjun form the admission committee

There were 6 Proffs from different departments at IIT kgp and around 45 people were divided into 3 groups of 15 people each and 1 panel of 2 professors was assigned to each group..

Started with a case study regarding a motorcycle company Honda something..We were given 5 minutes to read the case study and then 1 minute per person to speak about it (people were asked to speak by the panel in random order) After that around 10 minutes of discussion..Case study was pretty simple, no questions were specified, nor was anything else written that had to be discussed..But it basically revolved around the marketing strategy of the company - how it had established a brand and then became a market leader..Discussion was not that great as 3-4 people taled at the same time after some intervals but monologue was pretty gud..I was lucky to be picked 2nd to speak
We were asked to summarise 3 salient features of our discussion in around 2 minutes after the GD..Writing skills were tested in that so grammar and expression of opinion is important..

Had to wait 2 hours for the interview..Was taking pretty long..Anyways here goes..Panelists were 2 Proffs P1 and P2 same who had taken the Case study

My profile - IT engineer working in testing in an IT MNC since 19 months
JMET rank - 897

P1 - So where are you from
Me - Told and in bangalore since so and so
P1 - job profile
Me - explained
P2 - some grilling regarding testing (whitebox, blackbox and coverage of requirements)
Me - Answered pretty well according to my company standards..Also gave examples from my work ex (Looked satisfied)
P1 - Being a lady how will you be able to manage personal and work life
Me - Some gyan about priorities and time management
P2 - Most important question for today - What do you feel about Women empowerment

Me - Gave some gyan and also referred to about activities in my company(P1 and P2 looked happy)
Then i mentioned about the mangalore pub and was asked my views on the same. Told easily

P2- You spoke very nicely in the 1 minute in the case study. What happened after that?Rate your performance in the case study ?
Me- i tried to enter 4 times but was cut short.Tried to raise my voice also but 3-4 people were speaking at the same time so wasnt possible
P2- Is it right to raise your voice
Me- Its not right but i tried as 2 many people were speaking at the same time. Our case study could have been better and we wud have reached a conclusion sooner if we listened to everyone..But some people didnt let that happen
P2- Was it like a real life scenario and what do u do in that case?
Me- No it wasnt havent experienced any such thing..People are very civilised and professional in meetings ..Its very important to work as a group and the results of the discussion should be fruitful..Listening to others is very important..(Both P1 and P2 were  and nodding)

P1 - So what are your batchmates doing
Me - some mba, some working
P1- Which field - you have written marketing research
Me - told why
P1 - Give a dimension of marketing research
Me - tried
P1 (helped me) - take example of your project
Me - answered with an example (P1 looked satisfied)
P1 - Give a leadership example
Me - told
P1 - Extra curriculurs
Me - told
P1 -thats all Want to ask us anything
Me- No Sir..Arjun answered all my queries outside

Both P1 and P2 looked happy and were nodding all the time.. Toal time 10-15 minutes for the interview..

People were being asked technical questions as well..Someone with mainframes on COBOL..Someone with Oracle on Databases..

Hope this post helps..ATB Puys ..Any queries and feedback is welcome

RESULT - Didnt make it

Hi all,
Would request fellow puys to put in detailed case study as this is the first time i will be facing it. also plz tell ur points raised as i am new to this.....

Hi,

Had my IIT-Kgp GD/Pi today. Following is the experience:-

Venue: IISc Bangalore
Date: 12th March,2009
Time: 8:00 am
JMET Rank: 1106
Work-ex: 2.5 years in an IT-Product MNC

The process started with doc verification by 2 seniors from VGSOM(Anusha & Arjun). This was followed by 30 min. presentation and video about VGSOM. We were split into 3 groups of 16 each and led for GD.

My batch has 14 people (2 absent). There were 2 profs in my panel. One of them gave explicit instructions to avoid cutting and making GD a fish-market. I guess this worked well as the GD was VERY decent. We were given 7 mins. to read a case about a maverick CEO of a leading apparel giant which has to grow from 6 billion USD to 10 billion US in 3 years. It had grown so far by aggressive acquisitions and internal growth etc etc. I started the discussion by identifying the firm's core competencies and suggested three broad categories of development with an example for each. The group took up the structure and built on that. I chipped in some 5-6 times later with different points and a summary sort of stuff. Did well in GD but in the 1 minute monologue could not come up with any new idea(sab GD mein hi nikaal daala) and then in the 3 min summary could not cover a couple of key points discussed.

I was 12th in the group and had to wait till 12:45 for my turn
P1 - Old prof.
P2 - Young prof with French beard.
Me - Yours truly.

(After exchanging the usual pleasantries)
P2: Tell me something about urself.(This was the 1st time after so many interviews that I was asked this)
Me: Blah Blah..ended with hobbies.
(Both were not even looking at me.just sifting through some papers. I guess the SOP)

P2: So watched yesterday's match?
Me: No sir. Was in the company but followed it on internet.

P2: Who is your favorite batsman?
Me: Sachin
P2: (Cutting in before I could give reasons) Why not Sehwag?
Me: Blah Blahtechnically complete, consistent, pragmatic approach to batting etc etc.

P1: Tell me something about
Me: Told the cultural history, educational, political, health sector tourist importance.

P1: What are the PSU's there?
Me: Told some 4 names.
P1: U missed Central Coal Fields Limited?
Me: Yes sir I could not recall it.

P1: What differences have you seen in over the recent years?
Me: Talked about both pros and cons. More representation for people, educational improvement, infra development etc and then about increasing population and pressure on existing infra.

P1: Kharagpur has very clean environment.
Me: J

P2: What else is famous for?
Me: (Got his hint) MSD J

P2: Why are fans building his temple there? Is this required?Isn't it funny?
Me: Explained the details and fan-psychology and other stuff that MSD and his family aren't comfortable with the idea. Instead a museum is now proposed.

P1: What is the meaning of ? Headquarters? Manufacturing units?
Me: Told

P1: Have you heard of this " Process"?
Me: (did not hazard a guess) No sir I have not heard of it.
P1 & P2: (Both explained me the concept)
Me: (Nodding like an acha bacha)

P2: What is RBS?
Me: Told

P2: Who has it roped in as a brand ambassador in India recently?
Me: (Thinking) Sachin Tendulkar but I am not sure sir

P2: And where is RBS headquarters in India?
Me: I don't know sir but if I had to guess I would say Mumbai as it is the financial hub of India.
P2: No it is in Gurgaon and Sachin is the right answer.

P1 and P2: Ok. We are done. Thank you.
Me: Thank you sirs.

Lasted just 7-8 minutes compared to 12-15 minutes for others. Don't know what to expect but hoping for the best.
VERDICT:Reject

In VGSoM we offer general MBA, there is no specialization. In the final semester you can choose from different electives as per your wish.

Regarding the 6 month internship, the curriculum is under review and there is a high probability that it will be changed to 2 months. This step will be taken after weighing the pros and cons. So you dont have to be worried about it. Whatever decision will be taken will be in the best interest of you people.

Regarding the number of seats, the admission committee can decide to fill the entire seat as well if they find the students are suitable enough. So forget about the number of seats and prepare well for the GD/PI.

ATB to people from Mumbai and Delhi. We are done with the process in Bangalore and Kharagpur. The professors were very happy with the crowd that they got in Bangalore and Kharagpur. Expecting the same in Mumbai and Delhi.

Puys just one basic question , if i am understanding right then monologue means allowing individual to express there ideas in one min time, also one query monologue was after discussion or brfore discussion, this is my first GD PI process, so please help.

Thanks :new_bat_angel:

Dude you are right in monologue u r free to express ur view, understanding, suggestions anything (relevant ).... See there is no fixed timing of monologue.. as it appears from the experiences.. sometimes the profs are asking to give it b4 gd sometimes after... dnt worry abt that.. it wuld be same for everyone....
