Dear Readers,
Current affairs forms an important component of several competitive exams such as the UPSC Civil Services Examination, SSC CGL, Bank PO & PSU entrance tests, etc. Therefore, understanding terms/concepts/events that are in the news is critical for aspirants. We at PaGaLGuY bring you this series of articles in which we shall explain some of these important concepts/events for you.
In this article we are discussing China's ambitious MSR project. China has marched ahead in its major project of integrating Mongolia's Steppe Road (Prairie Road) initiative and Russia's transcontinental rail plan to its ambitious Silk Road Land Corridor. It is looking forward to develop the China-Mongolia-Russia (CMR) economic corridor to create new opportunities in Eurasia under the "Belt and Road" projects.
Mongolia's geographical position is unique as it is situated between Russia and China. 'The Steppe Road', an infrastructure project aims to boost the country's economy through trans-border transportation. The project includes a 997-km highway connecting China and Russia and a 1,100-km electrified railway stretch. It also includes expansion of the existing Mongolian rail system and construction of natural gas and oil pipelines.
Russia's transcontinental rail line was built from 1891 to 1916 connecting hundreds of large and small cities of the European and Asian parts of Russia. The Trans-Siberian line remains the most important transport link within Russia. Around 30% of Russian exports travel on this line.
China is taking initiatives to create lateral cooperation for regional rail interconnectivity. It has already proposed to Integrate India's 'Spice Route' and 'Mausam' projects within Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM). The Indian government launched the Mausam project in 2010, aiming to re-establish India's ancient maritime network with its trade partners in and along the Indian Ocean. Similarly, India's Spice Route refers to the ancient network of sea routes that linked Asia, Europe and Africa. India with its geographical location and large coastline has a natural dominance over various trade routes in the ocean. China is now collaborating with India to merge India's maritime plans with its ambitious MSR (Maritime Silk Route) project. MSR is one of China's 'Belt & Road' projects, which aims at connecting the country with Europe and Africa by road and sea to increase Chinese influence and economic growth.
Also, China has been working on developing the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The aim is to connect Gwadar Port in southwestern Pakistan to China's northwestern autonomous region of Xinjiang, via a network of highways, railways and pipelines, to transport oil and gas.
MSR is an ambitious framework for China's future geo-political strategy in the eastern hemisphere. The country will merge above mentioned economic corridors, partner countries and their potential to create a giant infrastructure that will shift the future economy and diplomacy in the region.

We at PaGaLGuY bring you this series of articles in which we shall explain some of these important concepts/events for you. In this article we will be discussing about Simhastha Mahakumbh.
One of the four places of Kumbh Mela that is held once every 12 years, Ujjain, will attract millions of pilgrims come April 2016 for the Simhastha Mahakumbh. The event, which will see devotees descending to take a holy dip in the Kshipra river, will be held from April 22 to May 21. The Madhya Pradesh state government has issued several directives to ensure eco-friendly celebration.
The Simhastha Kumbh is celebrated when planet Jupiter rises to zodiac sign Leo's (Simha) quarter (hence the name Simhastha). As a fitting rule for this spectacular celebration of divinity, the government has ordered zero use of plastic items in the area. Also, only bicycles and battery-operated vehicles will be arranged for devotees to travel in.
A blanket ban on any and all plastic items including bottles, bags, water cups etc. has been declared. Instead items made of eco-friendly materials like paper and jute will be promoted during the fair. Madhya Pradesh Urban Administration and Housing minister, Kailash Vijayvargiya also stated that around 259 huge battery-operate vehicles and numerous bicycles will be required for smooth transportation of people during the fair. Efforts will be taken to install sufficient water-vending machines to reduce dependence on bottled water.
A meeting with international environment experts will also be held.
Special Trains
Another highlight about the Simhastha Kumbh is that the Western Railway (WR) has planned to run 100 special trains to meet the rush of passengers going to the event. The WR is also planning to build an over bridge for devotees in Ujjain at a cost of Rs 27 crores.

This article is about a social media campaign to garner support for conservation of lesser-known, non-charismatic species (those with less appeal) such as turtles, pangolins, tokay gecko, monitor lizards, owls, corals, sea cucumbers etc. It was initiated in February this year. Jointly organised by TRAFFIC (the wildlife trade monitoring network), WWF-India, and Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), the campaign managed to reach out to around 1.4 million people via Facebook Twitter and Google.
Titled Preserving the Future: Stop Illegal Wildlife Trade, the campaigners asserted that illegal trade of lesser known animal and bird species go unreported calling for greater support for their conservation.
Statistics collected by them showed that annually hundreds of pangolins, tortoises and lizards are plundered, tonnes of sea cucumbers are captured and an approximate 700,000 birds are trapped illegally. However, this blatant exploitation never comes to light and coupled with less information on the species' population status, poaching and smuggling practices, doubly jeopardises their future.
The campaigners
The WCCB is the statutory body established by the Government of India in 2007 to combat organised crimes against the wildlife. Currently, Shyam Bhagat Negi is the additional director of WCCB.
TRAFFIC is an international organisation committed to ensure that trade of flora and fauna does not threaten conservation of nature. It is a joint program of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The latter is a worldwide NGO focussing on environment conservation, operating in over a 100 countries. Its Indian unit is called WWF-India.
