what should we read
all seniors please help us
how should we go about it
i have heard that placements could be a prob for social work is it true

:
Congratulations to all who have got the GD/PI call for MA in social work course.

What I would like to know that, will there be one more GD or only a personal interview? I am asking this because socail work course include a GD in it examination itself.

Also would like to know from seniors that what is the placement scenarion and what is the average and maximum packages for the recent placements.

hey
so you are asking my goals as such....
well yes i have calls for both HR and SW.

as for opting for both ,i feel that is one way of going about what
i want to do in life........and i came to the conclusion that both the
programs can help me learn more about life, about people ,about society and the methods or the knowledge of going
about and working .

well i have many many ideas that i want to execute in my life
and the one close to my heart is to set up a nonprofit
organisation catering to childrens' education and care for the
elderly. and this is where TISS comes in!:hurray:

so u see no preference to any ,will take up what my heart says
if i make it in both!

after all , life is best when it flows freely ............
all the best to all of us!:cheerio:
Making social work degrees relevant
RAMYA KANNAN
A complete overhaul of the existing syllabus and curriculum, changes suitable to the Indian context, will make social work a popular option for students

social strategists?: Students of Master of Social Work of Pondicherry University staging a street play on human rights.

Is your idea of a social worker still a person in a ragged kurta, mostly dirty, a jholna slung across, poorly-paid, overworked? Actually, there is no business for that kind of stereotype anymore, because what we get now are passionate young people with a vision and an education to boot. By an education, we mean a professional qualification - Social Work.
A master's degree in social work is no longer what it used to be - the refuge of students who have not managed to get into any other course. Take a look at this: There are over 50 colleges that offer social work at the master's level in Tamil Nadu. Obviously the State has come a long way since the 1970s when the Madras School of Social Work in Egmore was the only institution offering a programme in social work. In Chennai, three institutions provide undergraduate course in Social Work - MSSW, Stella Maris and MadrasChristianCollege.
In the beginning, it was only a PG diploma course in Social Work at the MSSW. But that did not last for long either. The overwhelming popularity of the course meant that it would be converted into a bachelor's degree programme and a master's programme in Social Work, offering several specialisations at the higher level.
"There is no doubt that the course is getting popular among students. Even in terms of campus recruitment, MSW students get swept up. Top positions in the corporate world and in the NGO sector are occupied by our students," says Fatima Vasanth, Principal, MSSW. But is the student focussing more on a HR specialisation rather than a social work specialisation, in the hope of making more money in a career?
"No doubt there is a bias. The demand for the HR profile is greater among students. This is primarily because they can land corporate jobs that will bring them more money than pure social work will," clarifies K. Shanmugavelayutham, who has been teaching Social Work at LoyolaCollege for more than two decades now. He also serves as the Chair, Board of Studies, MadrasUniversity.
He says that in interactions with the industry, he has discovered that some companies prefer an MSW qualification even over an MBA qualification because of the strong grounding in psychology, counselling and inter-personal relations students of MSW get. The assumption is that these students have a better understanding of the psychology of human behaviour.
Also, colleges that offer MSW believe in sending students out on to the field for equal number of hours as they have to take in classroom instruction. In MSSW, 50 per cent of the time is allotted to theory, the other 50 per cent being allotted to practicals, working on the field, interning with NGOs or institutions. Fifteen hours are spent per week on the field. At D.G.VaishnavCollege, during the first year of the two-year course period, students are deliberately not given industry exposure. There are a series of training programmes, apart from field internships, that give students a rounded training in communication, leadership and social orientation.
Vidya Srinivasan, Head of the Department of Social Work, D..G Vaishnav College, concurs. Her students are placed, nearly 100 per cent every year, raking in good compensation. This does not mean only IT companies or manufacturing industries. With the growing importance of Corporate Social Responsibility in large IT companies and business houses, recruits can also utilise their pure social work skills on the job, she says. In fact, last year, TCS had hired students of D.G.Vaishnav for their CSR wing at a maximum compensation of Rs. 5 lakh per annum, a fairly substantial sum for a person who is starting out.
Dr. Vasant says CSR has increased the demand for MSW graduates in large corporates. It has become a sort of bridge between a high-paying corporate job and a deeply satisfying job of serving the people. She adds that the salaries can go up as high as Rs. 5.5 lakh per annum for a CSR job.
She also recounts that there were instances such as post-tsunami when the demand and compensation for MSW students who had specialised in medical and psychiatric social work, family and child welfare counselling and community development went up.
The economic downturn, she fears, is likely to have a negative impact on hiring for CSR jobs.
Vandana Gopikumar, founder trustee, The Banyan, says the organisation definitely looks for MSW qualification when it hires and believes in compensating them adequately for their effort. "Many students still consider it their last option. Why? Because they still believe that a social worker does good and gets paid trash for it," she says. But now, MSW graduates are social strategists, she says. However, she believes that a massive overhauling of the MSW syllabus and training is in order in order to prepare students to have a rounded approach.
Prof. Shanmugavelayutham says the syllabus is being constantly updated, but it could do with more regular revisions. There is also an attempt to "Indianise" the syllabus, make it more appropriate for our conditions.

hallo ppl

i got in touch with a senior Ms.Neha aishwarya ........most prob she will be joining us here.... here's a message she sent for us::

good to hear that u all aspire to be real social workers. we seniors would be more than happy to help u... feelfree to ask any qustions that u have regarding the PI. on my side i can just tell u that the best thing that u need to do in the PI is Be Yourself. be honest about everything that you say. have a thorough knowledge of the subjects that u have studied, go thru the Prospectus very minutely, and be very sure of what u have written in the Autobiographical statement. it can also be a stress interview where some of the answers may not be assured to be corrected. however, be sure and confident about what u say. and trust me if u really have the zeal to be a social worker and serve the society then that will surely be more than enough.. But be very honest.. and yes why do u want toget into TISS and why a social worker can be some common questions... All the Best
