Hi All,

On my last visit to Daman, I saw a hoarding "START EARLY, REACH SAFELY"

I made it to TISS for 2006-2008 batch. I had a lot of help from the contributors of the Thread for '06-'08.

I start this thread for all the aspirants of TISS '07-'09.

Will make sure that all the information is available from previous posts and latest ones regarding TISS are available here.

Come a long way. A long way to GO......
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TISS changed the selection process for '06-'08 batch and it would be safe to presume that the process would be the same hence forth.
It is a four stage process namely Aptitude Test, Essay Test, Group Discussion & Personal Interview.
Aptitude Test: (the no. of questions may vary... I don't recollect)
This comprises of four sections namely Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning, Business Knowledge and a section on simple mathematics.
Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning carry 2 marks each and each has 25 questions. Mathematics carries 1 mark and 50 questions. Business Knowledge section had around 30 questions. I could not attempt even 20 % of the questions in this section. Questions included five-year plans, economic growth. Only serious business magazines can help.
As far as aptitude test is concerned, I had the feeling that it was very easy. This might not be the case next year as TISS changed the pattern. It might be more intense this time.
Essay Test:
Please don't apply the logic of "BADA HAI TO BEHTAR (BETTER) HAI"
When I gave the essay test, I saw a girl furiously writing from the word go and could clearly see around 7 pages in those 45 minutes. She is not in. I wrote only 2 pages. But I made sure that I spent around 7-9 minutes in deciding the topic and structuring and only when I was satisfied with what I had, I started writing. Ram, our senior at TISS, had suggested it and it has worked for me.
The topics can be varied but will broadly cover social, political and economic issues.
Times Editorial, definitely Hindu Editorial, Outlook, IndiaToday, CNN-IBN, NDTV have been the time tested ones that have worked. I would suggest www.indiatogether.org too. Alternatively, search google with the keyword related:www.indiatogether.org.
Objective of GD : stuff like leadership, communication skills, presentation skills, how you say what u want to say, how u listen to others, tolerate views, reach a consensus.... frankly, I personally believe a GD defeats the purpose of testing the very qualities stated above 'coz I really don't think much of these are really seen / tested... I may b a very well-read, informed, sensible, meticulous and focused person but if i'm shy / my group's rowdy / topic not to my liking / not too much info on subject, I'll not get through! but the fact remains that GDs are the only way to look at candidates in groups and eliminate... It's impossible to interview so many ppl...
So guys, be at your best behaviour and no riots / fights plz... the entire group will get disqualified. And if you'll dunno much about the topic, wait for some views from the rest and then give in ur inputs... its ok if you don't start the discussion... be ready to sum it up - u may b asked to conlude individually!
I'm a little skeptical on discussiong out topics here in the thread snce althou you'll would put your ideas forth - it will remain just that - an exchange of ideas! none of the rest of the 'qualities' like leadership, comuniction skills, body language et al will be tested. in Gd's its equally imoportant what you say AND how you say it.
Newayz, if you'll decide to go ahead with it, we'd see how much we can help wih it online!!!
Well junta my view is that all trade unions per se should be dismantled
Anyways i am never going to negotiate ( Jumping the gun here assuming i become an Hr- Manager ) With any with any trade unions run by communist comrades
Communism or Socialism ruined this country up till 1990 and its only then when we finally opened our economy that this country has seen some progress.
Labour Laws should be reforrmed to a hire and fire scheme to encourage foreign investment i say.
Unfortunately the pro reform BJP government is out and the comrades are making noises in delhi , hope the congress has some sense and keeps the commies at bay.
TISS is second best after XLRI for PMIR...only 30seats u c for XL's 60 in PMIR... about the 80k question i have no doubt its a very tricky call... but if i were u i wud look at it this way... addin the 80k my total cost of education including acco comes to about 1.8 for the 2 yrs while that wud be much less than the amount u wud pay annually for ICFAI for fees and acco.
Moreover look at the placements the avg pay in TISS is 5.9 lakhs[highest 8.2 and lowest is 4.3] which u need to compare with the avg in ICFAI [ i dunno what it is]. So take these factors into consideration. TISS while it may not be better than XL in PMIR is def ahead of SCMHRD and MDI's HR prog.
Still its ur personal call mate, how much the 80k has to come from pocket and how much of the loan the bank wud refinance u...they shud on the face of it not have a problem as TISS is a more reputed inst than ICFAI and also the loan amt wud be less than the original which they wudve approved for u for ICFAI...anyways its for u and ur family to make that decision....ALL assumin u get thru TISS....Best Of Luck
spoke to a guy who had appeared for the tiss gd/pi last year, and also another who had appeared in 98 or sometime then... both got thru essay/gd, one cleared pi (got a call) but decided not to join and went to lichtenstien... now he is back for a while... they both say that what tiss looks for in the person the yfinally select for pi is not known... the tiss people tell before the gd that they will not tolerate over-aggression or taking too much controll of the gd... in the pi they both had stress interviews... also, i remember reading on this forum that all who apply get called for the essay/gd, and from them ppl are shortlisted for pi... but the senior fellow said that they will shortlist people from the applicants also, ie not all who apply will be called for essay/gd...
abt the essay, again, what they look for is not data or quotes.. they look for how you structure your opinion....
just posted all this so it can help all, including me, by discussion... please respond peple.
Saw some thoughts on comparing TISS vis a vis with other institutes.....TISS is second best to none..am not saying bcos am a TISSian...but am giving u pointers for you to ponder over and decide for urself...Am not saying wat other colleges do but am giving u a perspective on TISS
*) Peers...Peers are the best in TISS..very diverse...U get to interact with Social work and Hospital/Health Admin students...whose perspective is very different from rest....Other B-schools have only MBA's...
*) Location...Mumbai dude (u will know the value of it only wen you r here)...not in a deolated town in Bihar or Orissa
*) Industry ineraction... Location adds on to it....
*) Culture...You have to feel it....Then visit other colleges to come to know of how valueble TISS culture is
*) Batch Size ...The amount of bonding b/w the batch, b/w senior and junior batch, b/w faculty and batch is unpararlleled. Probably the only college, where all the faculty knows all the names of the students in the batch
*) Field work...No other b school has such a curriculum
*) Ur CV would show as if you have done 4 projects for 4 companies before your final placements. This excludes Summer Internship.
*) Summers is not mandatory unlike other B- Schools, which in itself shows how much industry interaction students get during the college days....
I can go on and on...
Think before...IS PLACEMENTS WHAT UR LOOKING FOR...?????????? Salaries and placements may be a reason (No second thought abt it)...But
IS THAT ALL...
THINK....What you want
VALUE ADDITION OR BRAND....
OR
BOTH BRAND AND VALUE ADDITION
If you find answers for all of this.....Comparison doesnt arise at all...You will find the right answer
As mentioned earlier and elsewhere in other threads, it helps to read serious newspapers and magazines, etc. for doing well here. Your awareness and sensitivity to social, political and economic issues won't come from just preparing on these topics but will come from your interest in these topics. The essay topic I choose had nothing in common with all the reading that I had done. The readings that I had done, however, had changed the way I interpreted and understood things. Hence, read a lot, I mean a hell lot. It will the change the way you think, interact and understand the world around you.
Will keep adding more topics here.
ESSAY TOPICS:
1.The politics of Poverty
2.Marxist perspective of knowledge
3.Delayering of an organisation
4.Values for the new millenium
5.Alternatives to marriage:A feminist perspective
6.Public Health system as defined in rural india
7.Anomaly of Secularism
8.Multinationalism and democracy
9.Indian-Pakistan relations
10.Business reengineering
11.Indiviudal Goals & Society's good
12.Democracy nad Multiculturalism
13.Strategic Management
14.Entrepreneurship in INdia
15.Western IMperialism in Knowledge production
hey guys... i am not sure... whether my queries are okie to be put up her or not... I had posted them initially, on "HR Anyone??" but was advised to put them on TISS thread....
i have a few more Questions on HR... since i am quite confused and i sincerely hope the intellectual PG junta would surely help me...
1) What is the scope of HR today? People say that fields like mktg or sales are much better than HR and one should choose them. Is it true?
2) Can an HR guy never be a CEO?
3) Whatz the difference between MD and CEO?
Regards,
Gaurav
Please help me out with my confusion!
Role of HR today is much more than at any time in the past in India. Even a few years back and infact even now in some industries, HR is looked at interms of administration and benefits. However, that is not true especially in a globalised India and a very, very ambitions work force. Hence the need for sound HR function which can take care of people and cater to people in an organization.
Some might have concerns about HR outsourcing, but infact, its an opportunity. It would further enlarge the role of HR and probably give more entrepreneurial opportunities.
So HR as a profession could be the most stable around.
Regarding other queries, I do not have much clarity but would try and get some seniors to contribute w.r.t that.
Thanks for the answer babu bhai.. 😃 and i would be waiting for the other answers as well...
Please tell me, what is ur stance when u compare HR with other mgmt fields? Where do u find HR , in that case? What's the current status of HR, in India today.....
what're its scope and future pospects?
I think I have answered part of the question "current status of HR" in the previous post. and have dealt with future prospects too... cant really compare other mgmt fields with HR. every function has a different role to play.
Olrite! But can u answer my remaining questions as wel? 😃
Knowledge workers- Will they ever Unioninse?
Hindutva makes a mockery of Hindus
Euthanasia
Corruption is an economic lubricant and hence not all that bad
Indiviudalisam or collectivisim - which is the more relevant philosophy for today?
A nationalis t or globalist citizen - which u prefer
Is social development possible without population control
shud mercy killing be lega,llised
gender equality in BPO sector
who rules the world- MNCC's or politics
Mgmt Institues shud churn out job providers and not Job seekers
reservation of women in top managenment position
liberalised economy and sustained social security - an antitheseis or synthesis
Hi friends...
here is a lowdown on my GD PI experience (june 10,2005)..
for the essay we were given 3 topics
Injustice against women -causes and consequences
Caste based voilence in elections
Role of IT in rural development..
I chose the 3rd one.. and i wrote about 2 and 1/2 pages.... to be very frank that was the first essay that i wrote after i passed out of college...( it was not that i was very confident and so no practise but i had converted MDI Gurgaon, so i just came to TISS GD PI to draw from the experience... after admissions into MDI i was on the releived side and so was not preparing hard for TISS..)
Then the GD the topics were
SHould social scciences or Physical sciences be given more importance in the curriculum.
Human resources or financial resources ,which is more important
every body jumped to the 2nd topic ... i did not start the GD but i made 6 contributions two of them backed with real corporate examples.........
the interview was conducted by a panel of 3....... no stress.. they made us feel completely at home....... it was mainly a general interview .. but there were a few questions that pertained to my BMS final year.(ACADS)....... also for 3 mths i worked with career launcher .. so there were a couple of questions pertaing to my Learnings at Career Launcher..........
what i feel is the kind of material for preparatory reading may include times of India editorial , the week or any other weekly magazine like India today or Hindu.......
a economic magazine or news paper would also be good (although not really needed for the essay, it might help u in the GD.. e.g my topic was "human resources or financial resources ,which is more important ?" the gyaan that i had collected from the busines mags was of immense help to give examples in the GD... that went a long way in placing me over the others in my GD.........
Also it is important that u dont be too aggressive in the GDs that u take part in as it was seen in 2 /3 cases (@2005 GD process) that groups in which one or two people were aggressive the whole group was disqualified...
+ it would be good if you could develop your own views on a lot of social problems that plague our Country..... u could do this by reading through the writeups that come in various newspapers and magazines aregarding socially relevant issues... after reading and understanding it would be of help if you could form an independent opinion about the problem after doing proper research.........This would show u as an independent thinker which the evaluators would appreciate over other thinkers who are repeating ideas of others rather than having views of their own......
Hi all..
these were My gd/pi postings in TISS (2005-200& thread in PG.
Engnieers yeah abt 35-40% r there in our batch so in seniors batch...
Acads...yeah they do count
hi all..
Well...Atlast a little breather...Am thru to the next round....for PI to be held tommorow....60 have been shortlisted from todays batach..yesterdays batch 38 were shortlisted from close to 300 odd ppl who came today...
The topics for Essay were:
1. BPO : New oputunities for women ?
2. Elections reflect the political will of people
3. An ideal model for industrial development in India
It was easy to narrowdown to the first 2 choices..and since i felt i had more conetent for the second topic went with it....Took 10 mins to think on the o pic and structure it...And i did think in the begining itself that it wud be gud....then started from the 11 min and wrote for 1 page (2 sides) and a couple of lines extending to the next 3rd side.....It was a gud structure, quality was gud though quantity was just apt....."Started with Lincons definitin of Democracy and wat role Elections play....went on with the US electiosn...how a person instigated the war won, not bcos he was people choice but was out of fear of terror....then a para on Zimbabwe electiosn (Robert Mugabes Zanu PF party won over MDC) and though conducted well free and fair with international observers..Still it was rejected by the international Big brothers..Pointing the prejudice idea in them....Then came back home abt Indian electoral process...concluded by giving 3 suggestions to achieve that Elections reflect the political will of people...1. More ppl participation 2. Provide security for ppl joining
3. As TS Krishnamurthy says give a choice of none of the above in the choice ....Overall i was satisfied though i thught some quantity cud be increased....(But that hardly counts)
Then had my GD at 2 in the afternoon....the two topics were 1. Knowledge workers- will they ever unionise (how crazy) or 2. Hindutva makes a mockery of Hindus (useless topic) . The group decided with the second...though i dint prefer.....In contrast to DonB's GD...this was one of the owrst ever GD i have...Poor content...Not to blame...the topic itself is narrow...again and again same BJP, Narendra MOdi, Education, Fundamentalsim....We were 10 and 2 dint
speak....8 spoke but many were repeating samething and no body contradicted the other and went on.....But with very low value add...I gave the structure to go abt...defining hindutva and how to go abt...Brought a couple of checks wen the group was diagressing ....Finally i personally was no happy with the GD outcome......But i had a feel that i cud be the top
1-2 in the group....So if they gibe clearence in GD and read my Essay i cud stand out...
Anxious and stayed back till 6 30 wen the result came....Was one among the 60 shortlisted......And 5 from my group (I frankly dint xpect..so many from my group)....
Now for the other topics that came up for other GDs were MBA is a must for Manager(sucha sitter) Women are nmot safe in urban india Small is beautiful is no longer applicable in Business world..I dont remember the rest...
Have my PI tommorow at 2 PM and am leaving back to chennai tommorow as well...so will post my PI xpereinces after 2 days once back home.....But heard from the PI xpereicnes that took place today...Was generic and at times stress.......Donno ..Just give a
try......22 seats.....Cnt xpect much....Jut give ur best shot and get on...
Note :PMIR topics come for MSW courses as well (Esay /GD)...So keep following....
Just a little advice: Gals...please get propery dressed...we have applied for a professional course......The gals who came were awesome to look at..i did enjoy bird watchig but doubt if the panelist will do...also guys..be formal...nobody xpects u Coat or tie..but aleast no jeans and t shirt.....
PI Xpereinces...
Thats not Gangadhar..Thats Prof. Gangopadhyay..our beloved HOD.....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi all..
These were the Interview xpereinces that I had...was called at 3 30......3 member panel including 1 female ...HOD was the centre man (gangopadhyay).....
First questions.....
HOD :Well ramanathan why HR...
Me: Started saying , HR deals with te human as pect of business development...so and am fascinat in knowing ppl, thier emotions blah blah....so I want to do.....
Now he started to play with me....
HOD: he went on....wel ramanathan...U have done ur Engg...now wrokng in S/w......Now suddeny why HR....I said...
Me: Sir, wen i took up engg. it was not a concious independent descision...was well driven by people and friends around me......But now the decision that am takng is a very concious one....
HOD: well.....again asked...HOW HR after Engg....
Me: Sir, Engg as such is a very open ended course...the structure is different....1st year one is xposed to all basic subjects and then one moves to his specialisation in a very progessive state with mico understanding f the subjects and in the final sem also we had a paper called PM OB ...and i was fascinated wen i dealt with the paper and was interested in doing PG in HR...(Hoped that he waud ask something from OB theoris as I had prepare a bit....and will not ask my Engg acads...Dint ask OB concepts...which was bad...but all the more happy that he dint ask acads....
HOD: But that u went to S/w engg...thats nothing to with HR nor with ur Engg.....why...?
Me; Sir..I had made up my mind that i wanted to do my PG in HR...but i wanted to ensure that this desciion is not taken in a haste so......I thugh let me get into an org and get a feel of it.......and S/W is the place u get the most jobs and this was the first job that i got and so i took it up...
Now heres were he started testing me
HOD: Well.....wats the role of HR....its useless...no role to play....u have done ur Engg...do some S/w develpoment program and i think u will do a gr8 carrees for urslef.....This hardly has any scope these days...
ME; sir....that cud be true..in fact even before i finish my PMIR...i wud be getting more paid that the HR....but i think money isnt everything...I wud have job satisfaction in being a HR professional....
HOD:...Well wat satisfaction will u get...wats the use of HR....Nothing can be done with that...tell me in ur comapnay wat role it playes..very minor na...
ME: sir...HR is essentially a support function whihc tries to bridge the Organisational needs and the employee needs...so it plays a crucial part...
HOD: well..u urslef said....HR is only a support fucntion and does not have a major role to play.....so why u wanna do such a course...
Me: (Now i had to defend my self).....well...Sir...The very psyche is changing...before....Recritmnet and job of HR was taken care by the other operations manager as such...but than they realised that we needded professional who are fully dedicated to it....and as the trend goes , I think HR will contribute for the Business development as well...Say wen org is in state A...HR plans for the Org to be state C...(i was continuing...he stopped me)
HOD: Have u heard of IBM....wats the latest news from there...
Me: ( I knew that it had acquired Daaksh some tinme back.... but was not sure if he was xpecting that or the name Daksh BPO name was sure)...So i said...sir I donno...
HOD: Wat u donno...u dont follow the happenings in the business world...
Me: Sir, I do follow but am not aware of wat ur asking...
HOD: Ok.....wat does IBM stand for:
Me: International business machine
HOD: Wat did the start doing...
Me: (wat the hell man...wat do i know of theri history).... well i think its hard ware manufatcuring sir...
HOD: Wat...u donno.....Hardware came so recently......He started off.. IBM started off as coffeee vending machins and then into Mainframes, OS,H/w,,,bla blah blah...
Me: (kept nodding the head...i really dint know all this)
HOD:...so u see...they started off with cofee and now with S/w...so wat can HR plan....(He had caught with the fact i had told earlier the HR ppl plan for future)...
Me: Sir, i think change is inevuitale...one needs to go along with change........and its herein where HR comes in and plays a vital role(again defending)....Train emp. up and go on...
HOD; wat traing u can do...nothing its only wen ur free it can be done...
Me: true and thats very important and that why i wann learn to go abt it....
....then something more on this he asked...i have forgotten....
HOD: Did u take up CAT
Me: No ( had i said...IIM A AND B dont offer HR)....so i voluntarily said i took XAT ... (just to show my honest and also that am interested in pursuing a career in HR)
HOD: how much did u get
Me: abt 78 sir...not gud enough fro XLRI ( i was hoping that he wud ask....why tiss...why xlri...diff.....which is better and i had prepared for a gud answer.....Again he dint ask wat i was xpecting to asked)...
...Now HOD........says to the person to his left...a guy with a pony tail....." AM OVER SIR...U have any questions u can ask)
PT: (all these times he was just observing me...i thought he was a psychologit)
PT: Well....u see ...now everything is being outsourced...ur working for a client ablroad....every job is eing sent here.....all ppl r doing...so wats the role of HR here....wats the use.....(Again the same ond thing....blah blah blah)
Me: ( i was just annoyed...though i dint show... man go fwd...ask something else naa...said to myelf.....)...I said...sir yeah thee is a lot of attriin....even in my organisation there is a high attrition rate......and peopl retentionis imp also to plan for a proper work life balance...HR does play a vital role....
PT: Ok....tell me some trade unions in India and which party they r affleiated to..
Me: AITUC..All india trade union congress afflicated to congress.... and CITUC....am not sure of the full form sir...but i think it afflated to Communist party..
PT: Which communist party...
Me: marxsit...
PT: R u sure..
Me: Yes sir ( i still donno the correct answer)
PT: OK...ell me some trade leaders
Me: Sir i thinka ll left leaders shud be....like say praskash karat, sitaram yechury from CPM...also AB Bardhan from CPI...(shit man...i missed out George fernandes...how cud i miss him...)
PT: Iam also done sir (toHOD)..
HOD: Madam u have any questions...
.....Now there was a lady to the right of HOD.....
Mad: Well....u know liberalaisation.....its advent in idai...wat r it positives and negatives in india..
Me: yes madam..in late 1985....Rajiv gandhi came with this idea of liberlaising the comonly which is very good...and i perosnnally feell that the positives outweigh the negatives...like say the automobile industry...before we had only Maruti...now we have Hyundai, ford, Toyota...so thus the end consumer is with a lot of choice and he can choose accrodig to the money he can get ...( i cud have used the word monopoly is gone...but i missed)....Then said...looking at the negatives.....i think the smaller companies have gone aways..say take the exaple of Soft drinks industry we had Gold spot and Kalimark....now they r no more....so thats a problem and wat the left is doin in this matter is corect...
Mad: Ok.....u see there r this SSI and LSI......wats ur feel on that..shud SSI remain...r they necesssary..wat r the problems they r facing .
Me: yes madam...i think SSI play a major ...the give a lot of employment oppurtunites whch is very much essential....the major problem is that most of the Large companies r run by big industrialist.who have their political mileage and get their work easlity done.....But thats not the case with SSI....( i shud have said infrastructure, support and raw materials....but missed out)....so they need to be supported as they give opputnity for backward comunity and the people with less skill as well...
Mad looks at HOD....
Hod: well u may go now..
Me: Thankyou..Pleasure meeting u.....
Atlast a smile in the face of the lady
(atleast)..HOD...no reaction.....just looking at my application form......
Overall...frankly speaking...pretty decent interview...no much stress...but for the part wen HOD was bullying and tring to change m,y mind...wen i stuck to my reasons.....Donno...how the panel interpret my answers (well at the end thats wat it matters).....
Also....am one among the 500 odd ppl who wud be shortlisted for interview for 27 seats....well...thats quite a real tough compatetion and the institue will ideally like o have a diverse background and only the top notch can get in....Have given my shot...donno if it will carry till the boundary....
Leaving tonight and back home on friday morning....
Cheers
Ramanathan
U need to write for about a page in your own handwriting. Actually there is no filtering of the application formm unless u have not properly filled up....But nevertheless they do play a very major part during PI...so dont fill the form in hurry, write ur sketch before once and read it for urself and see if u r truthful or at least show urself that ur truthful and u can justify all that u have written...So do write it patiently and not make it JAZZY but truthful and highligh your strengths...Xtracurrcular and academic achievements.................Ur learnings in life and anything....show itt to ur dad/mom/sis/bro/friend and ask them for a opinion before u write the fair copy....But yeah they do play a gud role during PI but hardly before that.
