PS: Itna sannata kyu h iss thread??

do 99-03 first and den move on to oders

A bookstore has a bookshelf with books arranged in such a manner that the book placed at the centre is the most expensive. From one end of the shelf, the prices of the books increase by Rs. 10 till the central book, and from the other end of the shelf, the prices of the books increase by Rs. 20 till the central book. Prices(in Rs.) of all books are integers.

Q1. If the total price of all the books is Rs. 3660, then which of the following can be the total number of books on the shelf?

1. 7
2. 15
3. 11
4. 21

Q2. If there are 21 books in all on the shelf then which of the following cannot be the the total price of all the books on the shelf?

1. Rs. 13050
2. Rs. 14100
3. Rs. 17250
4. Rs. 19200

Mocks and sectionals this week.

For some reason I did more verbal than quant this week and it had a really interesting effect. :P

CL VALR sectional 5 = 29A 22C 7W = 59.
CL VALR sectional 3 = 24A 20C 4W = 56
1305: 98.32 = 98.55 + 91.99
Last year SIM7 VALR section = 22A 13C 9W = 30.
SIM8: 96.9 = 98.5 + 87.0

No prizes for spotting the trend.

From one end of the shelf, the prices of the books increase by Rs. 10 till the central book, and from the other end of the shelf, the prices of the books increase by Rs. 20.

Let the price of the Centre book be P and let total no. of books be (n+1).

1.)
=> (P - 10*n/2) + ... + (P -10) + P + (P-20) + (P-40) + ... + (P-20*n/2) = 3660
=> (n+1)P - 10*(1+2+3+..+n/2) - 20*(1+2+3+...+n/2) = 3660
=> (n+1)P - 30*(1+2+3+...+n/2) = 3660.
=> (n+1)P - 30*(n/4)*(n+2/2) = 3660
Thus, P = 3660/(n+1) + [15*n*(n+2)/4]/(n+1)

Now, as n+2, n+1 and n are consecutive integers and so for 2nd term of RHS to be an integer, (n+1) should be of the form 15k.
Thus, Total Books = (n+1) = 15.

2.) Putting n = 21 in above equation, we have:
=> 21P - 30*(10*11/2) = 21P - 1650
Let 21P - 1650 = X.
Now, P = X/21 + 1650/21.
What I sometimes do is find out 1650 mod 21 = 12.
So, X mod 21 should be 9 to give an integer P.
Thus, 19200 is not possible.
