Dear Friends and Moderators,
We had a successful run of The Art of Writing SOP thread started by SIMBA. Now, from this year many IIMs will have a writing task or essay in place of GD. I thought it would be wise to learn the art of writing essay and therefore starting this thread. Puys will ask question why it is necessary to start a new thread on the topic when The Art of Writing SOP was already catering to that. The answer is because essay written as part of application form and essay written on the spot have a difference. There will be no drafts in the latter case, no re-takes; everything will be final as you write. Therefore, it is necessary that we learn the basics of essay writing here.
I invite suggestions from other senior Puys on continuing this thread and the process to be followed. Hope that this is successful and leads others to the path of success.

It would be great if we could list down the essay topics/ types that were part of the admission process over the years for various institutes.
For eg - IIM - Kozhikode had more of(for lack of a better word) abstract topics.
IIM - B :- Note writing mainly on current affairs.(socio-economic problems)

There is a difference when you are writing an essay for your personal use like for your blog and the one you write for an exam. However, the basics will remain the same. For personal essays, it does not matter if you ignore the basics but for any exams, these basics may make it or break it. Since we all will be taking the exam, therefore it is of utmost importance that we keep these basics in mind when we are writing our essays. If we follow these basics, chances are that we will be on the right track towards writing our essays. Chances are that we may succeed too. Otherwise Nah! We are not here to be pessimistic. Be positive. We will work hard and make sure that at least essays are the part of the exam that we can manoeuvre to our advantage. In this series of The Basics, I will first cover the basics of selecting a topic.
First and of utmost importance is the topic of an essay. If we are given multiple topics from which we have to select one then it is necessary that we choose the topic on which we can write a perfect piece of essay. Therefore, before writing an essay on a topic, we must clearly understand what exactly the topic means and what the expectation from an essay is. It is of immense importance. Most of the time we are not able to understand the topic and mess up the whole thing which in turn means getting less marks.
For selecting a topic, we must read all the given topics and understand their meaning. Reject any topic(s) that you are not able to understand properly. Now take other topics one by one. Think about the topic and frame questions. Note down these questions, if possible. After you do so, you will have a list of Topics and their respective questions.
In most cases, the topic with more questions should be selected. However, you also need to think whether you know the answers to all the questions and will you be able to write them. Based on this analysis, you have to select the topic for essay writing.

The method I choose is using some techniques I make a list of the point (one word only) for every topic, which I have some knowledge about and which topic has maximum point I choose that topic for writing and according to the notes/points made in advance I elaborate on those points and logic etc etc.
So for me this question asking techniques is very unique. Please elborate a bit with the help of an example may be.
