Hi Guys,

I have been made an unconditional offer from Strathclyde for their MBA program starting in 2010.

All those who have been accepted please lets start posting our experiences for the benefit of others. My experience would follow shortly.

Thanks
- onefineday

I applied to Strathclyde sometime early November'09 and took almost 3+ weeks to prepare my essays and all. I have achieved quiet something in my life but my GMAT sucks it was really bad, not according to my standards at all (plz dont ask my GMAT Scores). But Lucy after reading about my achievements and all asked me to atleast apply and see what the admissions committee has to say. After exactly a month Angella got back to me requesting for an interview. The interview was taken by Prof Barry Koch. He told me about the MBA program and wanted to understand my expectations from the program. The very next day I received the unconditional offer letter. 😃 So in all it took me exactly 5 weeks from application to acceptance.

I was applying to other universities as well like Bath, Bradford, Birmingham and Durham but after getting into Strath I did not send my applications at all.

My Profile

Acads: Pretty Descent, always Ist Div
Extra Curricular: Above Average
Profession: Non-It, Secondary Research
Work Ex: 4.6 years (5.2 years at the start of the program)

Work-ex Type: Team Lead, Trainer, Entrepreneur, Analyst and Full Time Trader.
GMAT: Really Bad but on the minimum borderline (was compensated by my actual profile)
TOEFL: 101

My life Story: I worked for 3 years at a Financial Services firm (one of the top) was leading a team of six and must have trained over 20+ individuals. Then I started a dot-com, apparently the only one in India with advanced concepts of Risk Management and was advising clients on daily positions in the stock markets. It was a futuristic concept and pretty tough for many to understand so it had to go down. Worked on it for 1.5 years (including development + actual business). I started trading in the stock markets at the age of 16 and was a full time trader for almost a year who actually designed an application to make intelligent investing possible for the masses by collaborating Human Psychology + Technology which took emotions out of one's trading - customized quantity, automatic diversification and all. Yeah, I know usual bla bla which many would not get but yeah this is what I did šŸ˜‰ Today, I am working for a company with an unusual but very interesting business model since the past 4 months or so. So yeah, this is more or less my story. Have been surfing PG since 4 years now with different ids but never told my story to the world, so here it is ;)

Any questions regarding Strath, I would be happy to answer them? All those who have got acceptances please post, let's get to know each other.

Congrats..So are you joining the program? Have they asked you to pay any confirmation fee and if so within how many days? I am also planning to apply but am waiting for other college applications to get over.

As of this date yes I am surely willing to join. No, I am yet to receive the final letter so my 30 days to pay 2000 Pounds start from that day onwards šŸ˜‰

Thanks for your reply...I will bother if I have any other queries 😃

Sure anytime 😃

Dear onefineday,
I am planning to apply to strathclyde for their 2010 intake but am waiting to give my GMAT first. I wrote the CAT for the first time this year and am not very confident of the results given the prometric fiasco. I would like to know if its too late already to be applying and also ur take on what my chances of getting a call would be.

My profile :
GMAT - Not given yet.

Work Exp - 4 years plus
( Im a lawyer a third of the total experience i have is litigation related and the remainder is in legal management and LPO field. I have held positions as a trainer during my LPO stint and have worked in mid managerial level when i was into legal and contract management.)

Academics - below average with just high second division grades for my 12th and grad and high first division for 10th

Extra Curricular Activities - Nil

Thanks in advance.

Well kupidkutty as far as I have judged their admission process it seems really oriented towards knowing the individual candidate more than his or her grades or scores.

In my case I did not have a stellar GMAT score but had a great profile, work experience, academics and achievements something totally out of the box. I was skeptical as to my prospects with Strath but Lucy encouraged me and told me to go ahead telling me just one thing that I should share my **SPECIAL STORY** with them and then lets see what happens next. Later I realized that every person has a special story, you just have to project it the right way. I can easily see things in your work experience which will be a superb value add to any MBA program but knowing what you really want and how you should project yourself is in your hands.

All the very best and seasons greetings from my end :)

That is very encouraging. Thank you onefineday. Warm seasons greetings to u too.

Hi onefineday,

Accept my hearty congrats, on your success, for getting into Strath !
Dear, I applied in the last week of Nov, but have'nt heard from them (No communications yet). I have'nt written IELTS & GMAT, as yet (IELTS scheduled on 09/01 & GMAT in Feb-1st week)... so is this Bothering them ?? Plz help.

Cheers again for your admit !
Saurabh.

Yes Saurabh indeed this can be an area of concern. For Strath scores are not that important as important as your individuality is, as per my experience. But definitely a minimum scoring criteria is something which they are looking at for sure.

Moreover I think they are closed and should open sometime early next week. So maybe next week drop a mail to Angela or Lucy, whomsoever you are co-ordinating with and lets see what they have to say.

All the best.

Hey Thx buddy,

I'm anyways writing the exams.. & noways I'm gonna miss it.
But I have few doubts & concern regarding the Strath..

1. Why they have'nt communicated or acknowledged me since last 1 month ? (They might be closed now, but what about the whole Dec ??)
2. Do I need to send the official GMAT scores to Strath, or the soft copy of the score card will do? What did u do ?
3. How much time they took, from the day they acknowledged your application submission-processing-interview(if any)-final offer letter ?
4. How much time have they given for deposit the initial amount (isuppose 2000 GBP) ?
5. I am not doing very good with my GMAT preparations & moreover I had to prepone my GMAT exam for a month, so I'm really scared with it..& moreover how Strath considers the score ? Is GMAT scoring really matters over there ?

Anyways, 1 good news that happened to me.. is..I have been offered with an Unconditional Offer at Aston Business School (Sep 2010 intake)

...& that is the reason that I had to prepone my GMAT exam, in order to apply to other schools (I have already applied & they r waiting for my score).

Regards,
Saurabh.
Hi

What are the essays for the Strathclyde. The server seems to be down ... Can't access the application links....

The essays are :

1. Discuss an event or process from your work experience which has contributed to your personal/professional development, under the
following headings:
Briefly describe the event or process.
How were you involved and how did you respond?
What were the outcomes?
What did you learn that you could realistically apply in the future?

2. What are your aims for your future career development? How will the Strathclyde MBA assist you in achieving your aims?

3. Describe how your work experience could be used as a source of information for your learning and for contribution to group discussions.

And loads of other small questions regarding your scores, work experience and all. All the best.

Hey congrats bud :)

1. Strath is known to have a time consuming admissions process. Check the old forums you would know what I mean. Moreover its simple if you give them a complete thing it becomes very easy both ways to consider you as a package rather than in bits and pieces šŸ˜‰ This is what I believe in. No offense meant.

2. No only soft copy, I also did this mistake of sending them an official thing and wasted 2.5k but later they came back asking for soft scores.

3. 5-6 weeks.

4. Yes that is the amount and I have to deposit it from 30 days of the formal offer letter, the one which reaches my home. So as per my best guess it should be by the end of January. I got the benefit of the holiday season too.

5. This is something which I pointed earlier as well. The day you know who are you and what you have achieved I think you will win the battle very easily and on that day no score can undermine your individuality and your achievement.

All the best, shoot incase you have any other questions.

Hi onefineday,

Did u contact any of the Strath alumni, what do they say about the job prsopects.I beleive it might not be so easy to get good job easily in Glasgow. Besides I have heard Strath to be strong in startegy dept. You are aiming for which specilaisation? Can you plz throw more light on job prospects in lieu of Strath MBA?

Hi onefineday,

Besides I have heard Strath to be strong in startegy dept. You are aiming for which specilaisation? Can you plz throw more light on job prospects in lieu of Strath MBA?

Well as far as alumni thing is concerned partly yes I have spoken to people. Strath is good in strategy and has one of the best accounts and finance departments. So ideally it is good both in Strategy and Finance. Since I am a finance guy either of them would be kool with me.

But to add to what you said; if anyone is doing an MBA and wants to do specialization then a two year or 16-18 month program is the best. Programs like Strath or for that matter Insead or IMD specialize you in just one thing and that is general management. Specialization is for the heck of it, it won't add value to your profile and MBA; especially if you complete it with just 2-3 subjects of specialization. Please for everyone reading this do not take my word a simple search on LinkedIn would actually validate my thoughts. I do not wish to spark of a debate on this one, these are more like my thoughts and research which I live by ;)

Moreover an MBA is not education, no it is not !!! It is more about how to face, manage, tackle and derive value from people, from operations and other things. It is more towards the softer side and teaches you skills, it does not hardcode number crunching and other such stuff in you especially the 12 month programs.

If anyone still wishes to specialize from a one year program, I would really recommend to do a CFA or anything you are interested in thereafter to actually add value to your profile and to specialize yourself in the true sense for your industry of interest.

Coming Back, job prospects are not that solid beyond any of the top 25-30 colleges. Strath though close is respected in Europe. For asia it is not great. I have to come back to ASIA, India but still I would prefer Strath coz I am confident about the quality of education, bcoz of their triple accreditation. In the end it is on me how I perform on the job and take things forward. In short No it is not easy but Yes I am prepared for the worse even to come back an start my job on a late 7 figure salary package and not an 8 figure one.

Moreover your college selection should more be focused on where you want to settle later on in your life. My story is different I love doing things the tough way šŸ˜‰ Anyhow all the very best.

Hope this clears it :)
