#1. What was your educational background?
I am a Chartered Accountant by profession.
#2. What made you want to try for this exam? Did you take any other exam before this? What were your results?
I appeared for this exam as I always wanted to get a Government Job. Since a job in Income Tax Department is one of the most coveted jobs in India, this is the reason I always aimed for the post of Income tax Inspector before cracking this exam. Moreover, I never appeared for any other exam before this.
#3. How did you plan your preparation for your exam? How many months ago did you start preparation?
I used to study for 2-3 hours daily for 5-6 months. I couldn’t devote much time in the preparation due to my CA Final Exams. Later, I started studying 12-14 hours daily before 1.5 months of Tier I and Tier II Examination.
#4. What was the strategy you adopted in preparing for the exam? What was your study schedule? What were the major hurdles you overcame?
I always aimed at making my basics strong and then try to attempt as many questions as many I could before the exams. However, all these kinds of exams are all about time management and practice. Since Maths and English play an important part in SSC CGL exam, I used to focus more on these two parts especially Advance Maths and Grammar Plus. I focused on reading the English Newspaper like The Hindu. The major hurdle was the completion of the exam within time. Testbook helped me a great deal in managing time. The Mock Test and Practice Questions of the Testbook I was able to speed up myself. As a result, I got 23 minutes of spare time in Tier I exam and 5 minutes of spare time in Maths exam of Tier II.
#5. What strategies did you apply specifically for different sections?
Maths
I went with the basics. I tried to memorize fewer formulas. You may need to cram some formulas for Advance Math. The calculation is the key to crack SSC CGL Examination. Try giving as many mocks as possible. Buy one or two quality books and revise them at least 5 times.
English
I feel that The Hindu Newspaper is very necessary for cracking the exam along with one good book. Never try to mug up vocabulary. You need to build it over a period of time. Rules of Grammar are very important and you should remember them.
GS
Previous Year Questions are an important key. Moreover, it strengthens the part you are comfortable in attempting.
Reasoning
Reasoning can only be cracked by practicing more and more till you achieve accuracy.
#6. Most of the students prefer to go to Coaching Centers rather than prepare on their own. Which one do you prefer and why?
I never joined any coaching for this exam. I prefer self-study because it gives ample amount of time to an aspirant for introspection. An aspirant may end up wasting a lot of time in Choching Centers. You can take coachings of that portion o the syllabus in which you think you are not up to the mark. However, never consider a Coaching Center is mandatory for achieving success. If you are going for self-study then you will get all the guidance through . Here, you will get all the timely reminders plus you will get short notes of each and every subject.
#7. How important was Testbook’s Test Series in your success and how did it help you improve?
Testbook Test Series was the only one I purchased for my Tier II Examination. It helped me a great deal. The explanations given with each and every answer helped me in identifying my mistakes. Moreover, the level of Test Series was such that you will never find the actual examination a tough nut to crack as it is made according to the real exam. The Test Series improved my speed to a great extent and help me identify my shortcomings which I improved with the help of practice questions provided by Testbook App.
#8. What resources did you use to study (both books and online)?
For offline preparation, I referred to books like Advance Maths by Rakesh Yadav, Previous Year Chapter wise Questions by Arihant, Plinth by Neetu Singh, Objective General English by S.P. Bakshi & Lucent for General Knowledge. Moreover, for Online Preparation I used the Testbook App & Testbook’s Current Affairs App.
#9. How many tests did you take overall?
I took almost 100-120 Tests in total.
#10. Comment on the difficulty level of the exam paper. How did you tackle it? What were the challenges faced during the actual exam?
According to me, the exam was not that difficult except few questions. My Tier II exam was on 1st December which was considered tough by many aspirants. However, I didn’t find it that difficult. Testbook helped me prepare for the exam well which was the reason I cracked and came out with flying colors.
#11. Any words of wisdom for future Aspirants?
First and foremost strengthen your basics and never try to emulate others strategy. Always make your own strategy. However, you can use points from strategies of others to take inspiration. Make your targets and try to achieve them before time. Do not panic during the examination and learn to skip questions. Moreover, eat healthy & stay healthy. Exercise daily and be regular in your studies and success will be yours.
