For those who have doubts in sentences like

1. I couldn't help but admire his intellect. (SSC Tier2-2014)

2.He couldn't help but laugh. (SSC Tier 1- 2015)

3.The Mother couldn't help but cry at his behaviour. (SP Bakshi)  .

Help here means prevent [myself] or restrain [myself]. It has little to do with relief, aid, assistance, or succor-anything that usually comes with the word help.

This meaning of help you will find elsewhere: "It cannot be helped," meaning it cannot be prevented. "We could not help it," meaning we could not prevent it or we could do nothing to change it.

Think of I could not help but laugh as just another way of saying, I could not help laughing.

Conclusion:

I could not help but laugh == I could not help laughing.  So Do not write " I could not help but laughing".
