An Indian and a Pakistani shared the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, the first time the prize has been shared by nationals of the two rival countries. Here's a look at previous Nobel Prize winners from the subcontinent.
2014: Indian child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday shared with Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai who was shot by the Taliban in 2012.
Mr. Satyarthi gave up his career as an electrical engineer over three decades ago to start Bachpan Bachao Andolan, or Save the Childhood Movement. Today the non-profit organization he founded is leading the movement to eliminate child trafficking and child labor in India.
Ms. Yousafzai was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman as she returned from school. She had been campaigning for girls education in Pakistan's Swat valley, and has continued to be a pioneer for girls education after she recovered from the shooting.
2009: Indian-born structural biologist Venkatraman Ramakrishnan won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome.
1998: Indian economist Amartya Sen received the Nobel Prize for or his contributions to welfare economics. In his latest book "An Uncertain Glory" written with economist Jean Drèze, Mr. Sen, addresses the uncomfortable distance between India's successes and its deep basic weaknesses.
1983: Indian physicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for theoretical studies of the physical processes important to the structure and evolution of the stars.
1979: Pakistani physicist Abdus Salam was the first Pakistani to receive the Nobel Prize. He won it for his work in the field of theoretical physics, on unifying electromagnetic and weak forces. Mr. Salam is largely shunned in Pakistan because he was a member of the minority Ahmadi Muslim sect, a group persecuted by successive governments and condemned as heretics even by mainstream Muslims.
1979: Missionary Mother Teresa, who was born in Macedonia but became an Indian citizen, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She ran homes for people with HIV, leprosy and tuberculosis in the eastern city of Calcutta, now Kolkata. Missionaries of Charity, an order she started to serve the poor, has branches in countries across Asia, Africa, Europe and South America.
1968: Indian researcher Har Gobind Khorana was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology of Medicine for his interpretation of the genetic code and its function in protein synthesis.
1930: Indian physicist C. V. Raman won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work in the field of light scattering - he discovered that when light travels through a transparent material, some of the deflected rays change wavelength.
1913: Indian poet, writer and philosopher Rabindranath Tagore was the first Indian - and the first non-European - to win the Nobel Prize. He won it for Literature. His body of works comprises 12 novels, 3000 poems and over 2000 songs. Inspired by nature, pastoral life and his travels, Tagore wrote poems until his death in 1941.
