Corruption is the very embodiment of our lives. Every one of us is under its spell. Can we ever get the better of the scourge?

THE OTHER day when I went to a Government office and saw for myself the rampant corruption there I was flabbergasted. Guess what? It has earned a new name of chai ke paise, batha or bakshis. Batha for whom and bakshis for what? For doing what is their work, and for what they are given salaries?

Corruption has become the very embodiment of India. Maybe I am a bit cynical, but the fact-of-the-matter is that it has become an obligation and the very way of life. It's very easy to deliver homilies on corruption but most of us do not have the patience to bear Government officials and their nakhras and ravenousness for easy money.

Try telling them to do their work without taking money. The cold stare can freeze you, even in the 40 plus heat. Easier said than done. Even though a person brags he has never offered a bribe, it is evident that is a white lie. It's hard to survive in India without pandering to the egos of the corrupt babus. Even the compounder asks for a bribe. I dare to say that 99 per cent of the Indian population is affected by corruption. From clerk to the highest officer, everyone is under the sheet of this unholy water. The only antidote is to change the mindset of Government officials. Agreed, we are all gluttonous. So are Government personnel. But theirs is an insatiable hunger. As long as money exists, corruption will subsist. The Government can do nothing about it. The best way to solve the problem is to remove its very cause, Martin Luther King Junior said.

But, who will take the initiative?

ABET:-assist(in particular with a crime)
embodiment:-expression of something in a tangible form.
flabbergasted:-astonished.
cynical:-believing that people works for self interest.
ravenous :-extremely hungry(food/need)
brags:-say something with excessive pride.
white lie:-harmless lie
pander:-immoral desire/taste
gluttonous
:-excessively greedy
insatiable=gluttonous=ravenous......cannot be satisfied

subsist=support
