since last few days,I saw many posts mocking the concept of khadi.apparently their angst stems from the shortcomings of the present dispensation,system and govt,and they are venting the same on khadi(some of them ,not all). Whatever i would write now,u are free to disagree and ridicule or mock,since u are residents of a free nation,and no one,including myself,is above any criticism. My grandfather was a freedom fighter,he took active part in the Quit India movement,and got jailed and beaten up by police.And after india gained independence,he refused to take the subsistence allowance for freedom fighters from govt of india,so passionate was his nationalism. Patriotism was more of a duty and reigion for him,and for countless people like him,who were fortunate to serve the nation in the pre indep era.And my grandfather wore Khadi clothes only,till the last day of his life.He didnt quit or dilute his ideals even after india gained independence,just like many other freedom fighters of that era.This was the passion people had for Khadi. Now to be honest,khadi clothes were woven by hand,and they were somewhat thick and crude by texture.hence the khadi clothes of pre indep era were not very comfortable to wear throughout the day.(maybe nowadays with modern tech,khadi cloths have been improvised to suit the sultry indian summers).Yet many people adopted khadi as a part of their lives,like my grandfather,since they believed that khadi was inherently indian,and khadi would empower the impoverished indian khadi seller,over and above the british textile companies. No one is telling us to wear khadi anymore,because the Yuga has changed with the flow of time,and the demands,necessities and ideals of people have also changed.However,at the least,we can shower our Pranam and respect on the lotus feet of these freedom fighters,some of them well known but most unsung,by not mocking or making fun of khadi. Love ur roots,love ur mother culture,ur mother religion and ur mother soil. No need to equate Khadi with Modi.If u have grouse or angst with Modi,dont vote for him in future,and u can also build up negative opinion agnst him in a civil ,democratic manner.But dont make the concept of Khadi an object of mockery,just because u arent fortunate enough to live in a golden india. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose wore the khadi across the world,,until he left it to don the military khaki uniform of INA or Azad Hind Fauz.That is what i call rooting for mother civilization. Swami Vivekananda roamed the world with his Gairik Sannyas attire,and the world fell on his feet(Read the Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda to know more ).And on the opposite end of the spectrum, we have monks who pile up all sorts of rubbish with the help of the same saffron attire,,but does that make Swami Vivekananda any lesser?
