I am shitting bricks right now; might as well sustain a heart attack.😷🤕🤒 The policy of demonetization was declared on eighth of november in 2016.It was aimed at getting our country rid of issues like corruption, black money, forgery of currency notes and curbing terrorist and anti-national activities etc.<-------> Overnight, the currency notes of ₹ 500 and ₹1000 were rendered useless and people were given time till 31st of december 2016 to exchange their ₹500 and ₹1000 notes with newly introduced ₹2000 notes. People queued up outside bank branches to exchange their notes considering that it was for the greater good.<--------> In the initial days after demonetization, online transactions saw a sharp increase because of lack of enough currency notes of high denominations but as soon as there was enough cash in circulation again, cashless transactions reduced greatly. Overall, demonetization has helped in giving a push to online/cashless transactions.<-------->Forgery of higher denomination notes which were used to fund terrorist and naxalite elements took a hit and terrorist and naxal activities reduced greatly. Many naxals laid down arms as a result.<--------> One of the main objectives of demonetization was to check corruption and curb black money but 99% of the value of demonetized currency notes returned to RBI.Thr GDP growth rate of the country also saw a decrease.<---------->In conclusion, demonetization did succeed in curbing terrorist activities and increasing the share of cashless transactions in the total transactions in India but it was not very successful in curbing black money which was one of its main objectives. Its long term effects are yet to be seen.
