Demonetization – The Dawn of a Cashless India Demonetization is the process of withdrawal of certain form of currency from circulation in the economy. The process either involves complete withdrawal of a particular form of currency or its replacement with a new one. Recently, the current Indian government decided to withdraw from circulation or demonetize the biggest denomination notes i.e. 500 and 1000 Rupees notes. This unexpected move came as a shock to the public. The step was seen as a landmark decision for the Indian economy by some experts. The demonetization move also witnessed a mixed response from the masses. This is not the first time that India has withdrawn its currency from circulation. It was previously done in 1946 where Rs 1000 and Rs 10000 notes were withdrawn to deal with black money. The main objective of demonetization is to tackle the menace of black money, corruption, fake currency and terror financing. According to the Reserve Bank of India, 87% transactions are carried out through cash which provides ample opportunities to the corrupt for hoarding money and thereby harming the economy. Before demonetization, high-value notes accounted for a total value of 86% of the notes (by value) in circulation in India. It is expected that this step will also help in promoting cashless transaction. This will be very useful in the long run, given the technological revolution being witnessed by the world. There are some negative effects of demonetization as well. For instance, the sudden announcement created a panic among people. Long queues at banks and ATMs followed. The government and indeed, even RBI, seemed unprepared with sufficient stocks of newly minted cash to meet the needs of people. Vendors, local traders and shopkeepers found they could no longer get people to buy from them. The worst affected lived in rural areas, aloof from any kind of digital transactions. Tourism also took a hit. It can be expected that the noble intentions of the government should bear desired results in time. The future of India may be bright if we are successful in wiping out unaccountable money from the economy. However, a deeper analysis before the implementation of the move could have made the process smoother.
