When I was a child my family moved to a big old two-floor house, with big empty rooms and creaking floorboards. Both my parents worked so I was often alone when I came home from school. One early evening when I came home the house was still dark. I called out, “Mum?” and heard her sing song voice say “Yeeeeees?” from upstairs. I called her again as I climbed the stairs to see which room she was in, and again got the same “Yeeeeees?” reply. We were decorating at the time, and I didn’t know my way around the maze of rooms but she was in one of the far ones, right down the hall. I felt uneasy, but I figured that was only natural so I rushed forward to see my mum, knowing that her presence would calm my fears, as a mother’s presence always does. Just as I reached for the handle of the door to let myself in to the room I heard the front door downstairs open and my mother call “Sweetie, are you home?” in a cheery voice. I jumped back, startled and ran down the stairs to her, but as I glanced back from the top of the stairs, the door to the room slowly opened a crack. For a brief moment, I saw something strange in there, and I don’t know what it was, but it was staring at me.
All I saw was red ..............I check into small hotel a few kilometers from Kiev. It is late. I am tired. I tell woman at desk I want a room. She tells me room number and give key. “But one more thing comrade; there is one room without number and always lock. Don’t even peek in there.” I take key and go to room to sleep. Night comes and I hear trickling of water. It comes from the room across. I cannot sleep so I open door. It is coming from room with no number. I pound on door. No response. I look in keyhole. I see nothing except red. Water still trickling. I go down to front desk to complain. “By the way who is in that room?” She look at me and begin to tell story. There was woman in there. Murdered by her husband. Skin all white, except her eyes, which were red.😱😨😨

I collect dolls. They’re all old, and they’re all over my room-porcelain dolls, stuffed dolls, glass dolls, wooden dolls, plastic dolls. Some of them are clothed, some aren’t. Most have hair, but the baby dolls and the really old ones are either bald or nearly bald. I think there are over one hundred dolls, and they all have names. Daddy says they’re creepy, but that’s because he’s a boy. He says boys aren’t allowed to like dolls, and I heard that people can be afraid of what they don’t like. Like, some people have scars on their faces, and it doesn’t look pretty, so people don’t like it. And eventually, they start being afraid of the person with scars, because they think they’re bad. That’s how Daddy is with my dolls. Nobody gave me the dolls, I got them all myself. The first doll showed up in my bedroom right after Mommy died, and I still keep her next to my bed. She’s a baby doll with closed eyes and a pink bonnet. A few days later, I woke up and there was another doll in the bathroom. She was two feet tall, with a long blue dress and pretty black hair, and she was smiling at me. I brought her back into my room, and after that, there were just more and more dolls. Daddy got angry after Mommy died. He started drinking his “special grown-up drinks” more and more, and sometimes he would hit me. He was gone a lot, and he came home with bruises, like he’d been fighting. I was scared that we’d have to move, because Lily told me her cousin’s daddy stopped paying the rent when he was drinking like mine was and they kicked him out. And two days ago, he beat me up. I had big ugly bruises all over the place, but he didn’t care. I stayed home from school yesterday and just talked to my dolls. It was kind of weird, though. Usually they just sit there, because they’re dolls. But yesterday they answered me. And they told me not to worry, because they were going to fix everything. I hugged each of them before going to bed, but I didn’t move any of them. I know I didn’t, but they had all switched places when I woke up this morning. They were smiling, too, even the ones who usually aren’t. Some of them had red stuff on them, and I think it might be blood. Daddy won't hit me again.
