The honourable prime minister of India Shri Narendra Modi did something unprecedented on the night of November 8.He announced annealing of rupees 500 and 2000 notes as a legal tender by the government of India.Such a move to instantly scrap eight six percent of a country's cash circulation and that too of a country with a population of 120 crores is in fact of bold and daring decision. In fact If one look carefully, one is bound to find several reasons leading to such a drastic decision.Primarily this was done to put a stop to the shadow economy persistent in our society. A lot of unaccounted wealth is stored in form of cash and to flush it out was 1 major reason for this announcement. Besides this, counterfeiting and the use of such counterfeit notes to promote anti social activities are also a reason why such a sudden band was introduced. It's analysed that such short notice ban will result in an immediate blockade of such activities,not allowing elements involved to ressurect their financial backbone .Furthermore this decision can also be seen as the first baby step towards a cashless economy . A cashless economy in principal is bound to improve revenue collection and transparency. The motives are quite good, however, its implementation is quite trickyand has seen it's share of trouble. Given the huge population of India and its heavy dependence on cash this decision has brought the society to a standstill. Authorised financial Institutions are stressed to their limits. Automated machines have filled to relieve this pressure as it itself need to be calibrated . Shortage of cash has no doubt impacted retail and informal market in a negative way. In the short term this impact is bound to continue till it reaps its reward in the long-term. However it's not all gloomy show here . This activity has also brought out the best in people. Volunteers are helping out people in bank ,some ingenious token systems have been introduced in certain villages, mobile wallets have catched fancy of people. Thus one can find a mix of good and bad in the entire process associated with de monitization. The intentions of the ruling party are no doubt good but the implementation is going through a rough patch. As far as the result of this drive is concerned any analysis in present state is only a guest work and only time will bring forth if the dividend of the decisions are paid or not.
